What is this game?

Post by JacobXScum »

It's 10-15 years old. I only saw it in an arcaed. It was a top down shooter. Players were either helicopters or fighter jets (I can't remember for sure) It had HUGE bosses. The one detail i remember was that it had a weapon my friends and i always called the "Snake Laser." It was a laser that would track and arc between enemies, like static electricity. It was really huge and really badass. Sorry i can't give a bit more information, but anyone who's seen the game would know what i'm talking about based on that weapon. I'd love to locate it again but i don't know what it is.

Thanks.

That'd probably be Raiden 2.

I was looking for a game with similar description of this laser weapon but it doesn't seem to be Raiden 2. I think it had a stage where most of the enemies where large ships, and a stage in the sky, maybe with a skyrocket.
I'd say it came out at least 1 or 2 years after Raiden 2, I think it looked a little better.
I think there were around 6 or 8 ships to choose from. Not sure though ^_^ but I'd say at least 4.

Could the mystery arcade shmup title be Viper Phase 1?

For PROMETHEUS,

Seibu Kaihatsu's Viper Phase 1 arcade shmup PCB features a skyrocket mid-stage boss to bring down (complete with "countdown timer" to match) + huge space battleships to fight against in Stage 2...could that be it?

Viper Phase 1 PCB was released two years after Raiden II PCB (also from Seibu as well). ^_~

One pilots the "Judge Spear" fightercraft in the VP1 arcade game but it doesn't have the "Snake Laser Weapon" like that found in Raiden 2 or Raiden DX PCBs...although it wasn't until Seibu released the SP1 mobo based Raiden Fighters cartridge, did the shmup community first learn of the cool fightercrafts' true name as shown in the VP1 PCB. ^_~

The best Raiden home-system port is Raiden DX for PS1, in case you care (only released in Japan, you'll surely be able to score a copy on ebay).

Or by getting the actual Seibu Kaihatsu produced Raiden II and/or Raiden DX arcade Jamma PCBs would be better for the hard-core arcade shmuppers like myself -- sometimes the original source hardware works best..... ^_~

Yeah, I got the PS1 port, since the ROMs don't work with MAME.

Looking forward to getting my hands on Raiden III(and Raiden IV in the future), despite the negative things I've heard about it.
