Alien Hominid thoughts?

Post by 8 1/2 »

I'm a huge Metal Slug fan. I've 1CC'd the first game, and I can make it deep into the final stages of X and 3 on a credit, but this game still stomps me. The clear seems so far off that I wonder if the game is really balanced well enough for such a thing to be possible. That said I absolutely love the style of the game, and the fact that it's a flash game that found a home port gives me tremendous hope for the rising independent game scene (take that EA).

Anyone else played this? Also, can anyone comment on the comparisons between the home and downloadable version? I never played the download myself.

it is an incredible game, but it is cheap shit at times. i doubt that a 1CC would be reachable (but the best i am not). the style is great, but obscuring bullets and other attacks, as well others that are just damn hard to navigate, seem to put it on the no list in my book.

i love the game, but i will never play it seriously. i don't have anywhere near that kind of patience. :)
I have no sig whatsoever.

I have to agree with Cap'n Ahar, the game is phenomenally cheesy... way too many instances of getting hit by obscured enemy attacks.

I'm sure that someone will eventually have the patience to see this game to the end on one credit...

its a great game but the bullets do tend to belnd in to the backgrounds at times. I doubt a 1CC would be possible.

and for that, they shall receive a cookie! i promise.

(sort of) rarity is another thing. i think i got one of the last copies of thise game for GC in my area (at the time at least). same with Castle Shikigami 2 (so very happy someone didn't bother to pick up their pre-order :D ).

I grabbed the Cube version when I found a copy locally, and I do have to agree that there's a lot of cheap deaths to go around here. Otherwise it's pretty well done, especially for an indie game.

I was able to beat it with the credit system it gives to you by default (it gives you an extra continue every time you get through a level without continuing) but yeah, 1CC would be impossible for me. Plus, the game takes too long to want to sit down and really work on it. the game is great otherwise, but i'm already done with it :?

As far as rarity goes, I think it's probably already going to be a lucky find to come across a new one in the wild--the bargain bin is another story. I was working at Gamestop when it came out and we got two copies for each system and that was it. It never came back in stock and was soon "delisted," meaning that the company as a whole was no longer going to be shipping any more.

Speaking of this game, where's the Xbox port? Shouldn't that have been an easy post due to the pc-like structure of the box?

I think most parts of the game are doable on one credit, but there are times where the enemies don't telegraph enough. For me, the ultimate cheapo boss would have to be the 'shock box' thing at the start of the Area 51 level.

the game is tons of fun to play if you casually credit feed it. i've had people who rarely play video games have a blast in 2 player with it. neutron balls is a guilty pleasure too. but as a focused 1 credit completion it would be incredibly hard, but not impossible.

he's not that hard once you figure out his weakness. it just takes awhile to take him out.

I know how to defeat the guy, but I can never hit the right button in time with all those soldiers on top of me. Even the final bosses in Metal Slug 3 and 5 feel easier to me than that guy.

Obscure bullets are not.

The Xbox version was conditional on the sales of the PS2 and GC versions. As I recall, the tentative release date was around April/May (GameStop currently lists 6/21/05; can't honestly say their release dates do much for me).

In case you weren't aware, the original game was made in Macromedia Flash and was one stage long. The console version is entirely new. The art, even if similar, was redrawn, the original stage was scrapped in favor of the new ones, new music, new other stuff, etc.

You can still play the original here if you have Flash installed.

That's right -- I still need to collect all the hats. It does kind of suck that they give you the pirate hat so easily, though. That is easily the best hat, unless I'm missing a super secret ninja hat or something.

must...get..more...hats...

I'm a fan of the Sam Fischer style night vision goggles myself. That and the red Ruskie thing.

Night vision goggles, eh? Not sure if I have that one, unless you're referring to the WWII-pilot looking hat. But yeah, the Commie hat is cool.

Speaking of Commies, Super Soviet Missile Mastar is the best minigame ever.

Well, I'm no gaming master, but this game is not that hard to 1CC. Most of the bullets from the standard enemies can be dodged by ducking alot. Basically once you get the hang of avoiding those bullets and learn the necessary patterns for some parts and bosses you'll be able to survive fairly well. And due to the extremely generous life system you'll easily accumulate a lot of lives to counteract the cheap deaths that will start piling on later in the game.

I agree with the majority. decent game, tons of cheaps hits because the bullets blend into the backgrounds.

Another thing: seeing as the enemies usually come at you in a organzed manner none of the weapons are more useful than the other. I see this as a mjor flaw.

I games like Contra and Metal Slug the more powerful weapons were usually a luxery because the enemies would come from many different directions. In AH, they mainly come from only two. And seeing as they die with one hit from any weapon it makes actually having different weapons kind of pointless.

Heh, just noticed this thread  .

I'm playing a lot of this right now, and can only echo what most people say about AH. But despite it's flaws, it's a good time, IMO. Especially on the GC with one of those sexy little Hori digital pads.

By the by, the creators of Alien Hominid were here in Austin during SXSW, doing a conference on indie game makers. I missed it unfortunately...

Hmm, where are all the "hardcore" Garegga fans, to tell everyone "The bullets aren't impossible to see, you just suck too much to see them! Go play Do-Don-Frickin-Pachi if you're not up to a REAL shooter!" ;)
