A question about the Sega Saturn.

Do Sega Saturns play both US and Japanese Saturn games?

Not without a modchip or a special cart (the ST Key), unfortunately.

Edit: I completely forgot about the Action Replay, which is undoubtedly superior to the ST Key.

Hi durias,

No, nothing natural unfortunately! The three region locks are Japan, Europe & America. I own two Saturn units, one for US/Canada and the other one Japanese. Japanese Saturn tend to be expensive, so get a Victor version instead (as good & for a much cheaper price). You could also opt for a bi-pass method such as the Sega Saturn 4in1Plus Cartridge which apparently works wonderfully.

See: www.gamefaqs.com/console/saturn/game/916393.html

Overall, very worth it because most of the best shooters had not crossed their Japanese borders and they are quite import-friendly (as opposed to RPGs that is). Also, some of the rarest action games here (Burning Rangers, Saturn Bomberman, Christmas NiGHTs Into Dreams, Dragon Force, Winter Heat, etc. aren't uncommon/overpriced there!!

Have fun,

Word of advice durias, don't buy the Japanese Burning Rangers. English is essential for it; it's spoken, not read.

Or you could pull it apart and do a region mod, which is trivial. My EU saturn has been switched to JP mode, it shouldn't take more than half an hour.

Just a friendly reminder that a modchip will -NOT- remove the region protection, it exists exclusively for 'backups' =(. The only way it could be legitimately used is if you rip a JP game, change the region to USA, and then burn it - which is easy to do.. but a hassle. Just get a Pro Action Replay, but be careful with the Saturn's slot, don't jam it in too hard or you can easily damage it...

there's some good guides to fitting switches into a saturn to change the region (and 50/60Hz switch - but that's probably only a worry for PAL):

good luck! :)
