Err, you're talking about non-auto-scrolling top-down shooters, right? Cuz the arcade Ikari Warriors did have forced scrolling.

Anyway, if I'm understanding you correctly, Mercs I & II, Search And Rescue, Garyo Restuden, and the Pocky & Rocky games seem to be games you're talking about. Does Jackal count?

Firebird (by Konami on MSX 2)
Real Ghostbusters (C64)
Barroom hero!
Bathroom hero!

Guerilla War by SNK. It had an NES release. It's astoundingly fun.

Guerilla War is awesome.

I'm not sure what type of games you're looking for specificially, since to me, Chaos Engine is much more like Gauntlet than Commando. If you like Gauntlet style games, there are some other good ones on the Genesis, like Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Arcus Odyssey.

For Commando-type games, Expendable on the Dreamcast is a good one, but only in one player mode.

Guerrilla War and Iron Tank (also created by SNK) kick so much ass.

As for my fave Ikari Warrior style game eva, it's gotta be Neo Contra. I love that game too much, dunno why. Maybe it's because of those Russkies kickjumping on the boulders. Or seeing Bill's tiny lil legs running on helicopter blades.

Okay, well then, I like Warzone for the Amiga, although the difficulty level is intense to put it mildly. Shock Troopers on the Neo is the best Commando-type game of all time, though.

OUTZONE. Such an amazing game. I found it for the first time in one of those cabs that have 80 or so roms in them and poured about half a dozen quarters into it. Definitely one I'll have to track down some day.

I like it too. It's super simple, but that's sort of why I like it, because it's the perfect blast-o-thon. Plus, you just can't beat Animal Contra.

Millenium Soldier is totally forgettable imo. While in the same genre, it can't touch Ikari or Commando or Dogs of War. But for the cheap price of $5 new/sealed (it's in that range here in Europe) it's a nice purchase I guess...

You may want to try Time Soldiers for the SMS or on Mame. If you don't mind jeeps, try Konami's Jackal for the NES (which I love to death, btw).

There are two GB Ikari no Yousai games. The first one was released in the US as Fortified Zone. Oddly enough, the SNES Ikari no Yousai was renamed to Operation Logic Bomb for the US. So much for consistancy. No mention of Frontline? That one's a classic.

"Yeah none auto scrolling, btw I didn't know there was a Mercs 2"

Commando is Mercs 1 and Mercs is Mercs 2.

I love Heavy Barrel.

The bosses in this game is pretty cool, and your flame thrower kicks ass.

Your characters look like they are walking around tip-toeing, like a ballerina.

Thanks for clearing that up, I was wondering also about Mercs 2

Final Zone 2? How is this game like?

There was an MSX game called Final Zone, that was exactly in this same genre. In this game you would choose 3 from 5 soldiers, and then you control all 3 at the same time. You can put them in different formations, and each character has a individual life bar. You can even let 1 or 2 of them die!

Any chances that this Final Zone 2 is a sequel to that?

Add Who Dares Wins and Who Dares wins 2 at the list. Those are some blatant Commando rip-offs for the Commodore 64 (2 was also released on MSX), but are incredibly enjoyable!

On Commodore 64 there's also Paradroid..... which plays more like Gauntlet too.

And since Alien Breed is in the list.... There's Alien Breed 92 Special Edition, Alien Breed 2 and Alien Breed Tower Assault, for completion sake :)

Amiga also had Cyberpunks , which is a poor Gauntlet alike. ( http://hol.abime.net/3165 ), Virocop (http://hol.abime.net/1576) , Universal Warrior(http://hol.abime.net/1814) Galacitc Warrior Rats (http://hol.abime.net/2688) and also Cyberblast, that fits the genre too (http://hol.abime.net/3158)

There's also Alien Syndrome on arcades....

And Crackdown on Mega-Drive... wasn't that also on Arcades?

I've just tried Pocky and Rocky in rom format, pretty cool game.

Yeah I didn't include all the Alien Breed (too Lazy, shall add to list)

Crackdown was indeed on the arcades

Well I'll be, never knew that. I'd been told that FZ on the GB was more akin to Metal Gear. I own Operation Logic Bomb; so you're telling me it's basically a spin-off of the Ikari Warriors series or something?

Also, Predator 2 on the Genney rocks. I was really surprised at how fun it is and how awesome it is to see Danny Glover blow up. "I'm getting too old for this" haha..
