so atlus are wasting their time keeping their US fanbase happy with well rendered and consistant with content artwork for their nippon ichi games?bloodflowers wrote:The hostile reactions to localised cover art never cease to amuse me.
No really. A game we had little to no chance of getting ported, is being brought over, presumably with translations, and possibly even region free, so what do we do? Complain because the utterly meaningless yet pretty JP artwork has been changed into a reasonably bland but representative image of two robots.
Are we getting lucky with a release?
No, Ubisoft are screwing us over with their evil, evil artwork.
come on, it's nice to spend $60 bucks on something where everything's done right for once.
some people might not see these details as an issue, but to be honest, and as an professional artist, i see half hearted attempts of mass appeal while short changing and patronising the original target markets that the games were intended for as cynical , cheap and embarrassing.
i'd still rather buy the japanese import version (if it was region free)

You know what, I am just happy to have the game realized in my region. Box art be damned. I have the Korean version but no way to play it. Ubisoft just save me hundreds of dollars because I don't go buy Asia 360. After all, I am not playing the box and I don't just stare at it. Matter of fact it sit in position on me shelf where I can't see art, only the title on spine. I already figure that there was going to be name change, so the funk title don't bother me either. I still know the game as Senko no Ronde but will have to refer to it as War Tech when speaking with non shoot them up playing friends with a 360.
The game is not going to sell. It will not do well with mainstream 360 populous. I know 10+ 360 owners and all they look forward to is Gran Theft Automobiles 4 and maddon baseball. I gots one friend who is look forward to War Tech. Don't like the price. Wait, it WILL be in bargain bin and the game stores will have plenty of used copies. American majority don't like our games.

I don't like bad art, i'm paying $60 for it - is that good enough reason to complain?
the person that produced such a piss bad illustration shouldn't even be producing commercial work - it's an instant entry to the "bad box art" websites..
and no, this is nothing as bad as whining about spine cards, don't be so silly, it's not an all consuming thing that will prevent me from buying it, but again, i'll ask - isn't it nice when a company gets it all right, for once?? or do you just keep all your games in a brown paper bag?

that cover is the shit, the only one better is the US strider on the genesis cover.....
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

You can always print the Japanese cover and fit it over the american one on the case.
And it's not like we're getting Nintendo-style censorship or early 90's kind of voice acting. Or God forbid, Wrecking Designs' "improvements". Heck, we could have gotten characters that are not even in the game. *COUGH, MOBILELIGHTFORCE, COUGH*
Ubisoft needs this game to sell to every potential buyer, not just the fanbase. Joe Sixpack and Johnny Gamer may not buy this if they see a bunch of anime girls thinking it's a date simulation aimed at potential pedophiles. If substituting the pilots for the mechs on the cover is the only change, I can live with it since Ubisoft is already taking a bit of a risk bringing a game like this to the USA.
We've come a long way since the days of the covers on the SMS and Turbo Grafx 16. Fantasy Zone, anyone? Bomberman 93? Dragon's Curse? Final Zone 2? Last Alert? Duke Dynamite? Phalanx? Pro-Wrestling?
Did Zelda sell any less because it had only the name and crest on the front? Did people mind that Chun-Li looked like a guy in the US Cover of SF2 for SNES? Did MLF's cover improve the chances that a poorly localized game sold well? Was Megaman hampered by the horrid design made by a lobotomized amputee druggie in rehab that was put on the cover? Did it? Did it, huh? Huh? Huh? ANSWER ME, PEOPLE! THE END IS NEAR, REPENT AND TURN AROUND! 2X1 AT CHARLIE'S! STELLA! STELLAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Dude, you're paying for the game, not to play the box it came it....I wouldn't care if there was dog on dog sex on the box, fuck the box man, give me the game. Once again, why do you need that extra dicklick for a damned game? Buy the Jap version if its that important to you. But yeah, bitching about box art is just as bad as bitching about spine cards. Its a damn accessory. Its not like anyone is gonna care. Are you that insecure?pixelcorps wrote:does that mean I should just download it instead?Never_Scurred wrote:

I don't like bad art, i'm paying $60 for it - is that good enough reason to complain?
And what makes you the authority on box art? If you know so much about box art, why didn't you get the job? Oh, because while you were bitching about "bad box art", someone is getting paid to help bring the game over to us. What have you contributed?pixelcorps wrote:the person that produced such a piss bad illustration shouldn't even be producing commercial work - it's an instant entry to the "bad box art" websites..

What moron US gamer would even look at a game with a bunch of Weeaboo Anime characters unless they were wearing loads of armor or in action-based poses? gee, pretty much no one. and I find that this is actually rather good for what it is. it does infact display what the game is in a way instead of being horridly generic to the American gamer's eyes like the original cover. localization? ha, more like making it actually appealing to someone who has never tried a game of this type before, and it actually has a chance of doing so.pixelcorps wrote:I don't like bad art, i'm paying $60 for it - is that good enough reason to complain?

Japanophile...ya know, like the guys who insist on using the Japanese name for something even if there is an English name available and probably wear kamikaze headbands when they go to sleep and such.Strider77 wrote:what's a weeaboo?Weeaboo
My take on it is as long as they don't fuck with the game itself and leave the Live play intact, then I will be a happy camper. It probably won't leave my X360 as I have been massively disappointed in it thus far(I have played more XBL arcade games than I have commerical games in it)

because I already have a job, thanks, please stop being so abrasively childish.Never_Scurred wrote: And what makes you the authority on box art? If you know so much about box art, why didn't you get the job?
I've been in a senior art position in the games industry for 20 years now, and that, my friend is BAD ART, I don't like it period, does anyone?? seriously??- , can't you appreciate this fact, the fact i've repeated several times now...
some people like the whole package done well.
you don't care? fine - just because you don't have an issue with it doesnt mean others can't express an opinion on it, come on - wartech?? that's a 5 minute naming job that actually sounds like a wart treatment ointment.

in case you've forgotten this is a forum regarding niche games for a niche group, if you can't handle a little nerdishness, you really are on the wrong forum.
oh dear, here we go again with the confrontational abrasiveness...Never_Scurred wrote: Oh, because while you were bitching about "bad box art", someone is getting paid to help bring the game over to us. What have you contributed?
to that game, nothing, to the games industry as a whole, how about more than several, well received quality products for capcom, hudson, sega, konami and taito?, and yourself?
despite the barrage of slurs aimed at me, and the fact i've now proven i
might just actually know what 'bad box art' is, are you willing say that it's not?
ah, but you don't care either way - screw anyone elses opinion, that other people may just take the aesthetic value of the whole package as something they would like.
Maybe the developers cared about the whole package too, otherwise the japanese release would feature equally sub-art college levels of illustration.
How about raging against someone for paying out for a PCB when they could just MAME it, because, as you've said..
"it's only the game that matters"
lets face it, this game is probably going to slide off the face of the earth and be limited to a tiny run anyway, and guess what? the people that have been eagerly awaiting it end up with a less than perfect package.
so, again, i'll state yet again, SOME people like the whole package done right, we don't need any more mobile light forces thanks very much.
so, quit with the slurs, and appreciate the fact that some of us on here have a different opinion, and raging against anyone elses like some petulant child that doesn't share your "don't give a fuck" point of view is just a waste of your typing energy.

if you wanted to go that far, then yes. character design needs to take some new directions these days, and it's not exactly helping that the artists paid to design characters aren't willing to branch off. all I see on that cover is a bunch of generic characters standing there trying to look all emo and hip or something.pixelcorps wrote:including the character art from assault suits valken?Gungriffon Geona wrote:actually, Weeaboo also means horridly generic artistry of an anime style, IE the actual Japanese cover of the game. I STILL don't see why you would actually want to keep that.

Not a fan of the US or the Jap covers both are quite poor. But I frankly dont give a toss. The game itself is great.
I appreciate your angle about the overall package, but as you say this is a niche forum and I think we can go beyond the cover of the game to establish if a game is worth the money (hell I would say that even gfx in a game dont stop me buying it as long as the shooter is fun to play).

The box art is not that fucking bad that you need to write 2-3 pages on how absolute crap it is. What the hell is so great about the japanese cover anyway? Stupid mainstream non-interesting anime look, yeah that is just super fucking duper...
Wartech is a stupid name, but mainstream gamers often = stupid? Then it is targeting us, for just releasing the game AND maybe some parents or whoever stumbles upon it.
Get of your nerdy ascii horse, calm down and enjoy, you know, THE GAME.

I wonder how high one's IQ has to be to realize that enjoying the game and bitching about the cover are COMPLETELY SEPARATE THINGS.
And, evidently, they are not the only ones.tuoma wrote:Wartech is a stupid name, but mainstream gamers often = stupid?

I don't know why people here are complaining about the box art, this game wouldn't even be getting a Western release if it weren't for the fact Ubi can trick non-shooter fans into buying it with that cover. I know there's a great sense of entitlement here, but the 48 people here that will buy the game aren't enough to make the project worthwhile. Sorry.
