Shooters, Videogames and Arcades in Korea

Post by CIT »

I'll be in South Korea next week, first in Busan on business, then I'm taking a few days off in Seoul.

If anybody could recommend some arcades, game stores or PCB shops that would be really cool!

Anything else you might wanna recommend would be appreciated too.

Thanks!

I thought most of the gaming scene in Korea took place in the gaming cafes where they´re playing Starcraft and the likes all day.

I remember reading there was virtually no Arcade scene there (well compared to Japan anyway). The PCB´s available would probably be mostly bootlegs anyway (someone correct me if I am wrong here though.)

Yeah, the PC-bang (Internet Cafes) with online games are really popular there. But Neo Geo is (was?) really big there too, so they must have some arcades left no?

You're damn right :D Korean mainly play Starcraft. It's a blessing for us Starcraft gamers, because they are a huge community having professional players and TV matches (2 TV channels dedicated to Starcraft -_-), and they help motivate players around the world and stimulate other communities.

I have no idea about arcades though.

Well, you are wrong.

I'm in Korea now, and I found an arcade in Busan and two in Seoul. They mainly just had fighting games (KoF, Tekken, SC) though, I didn't see any shooters. They were more run down than those in Japan and were mainly using the old Neo Geo cabs (which I thought was quite cool though). Generally though, there isn't really the kind of arcade culture here as in Japan.

As for game shopping, it"s good for PS2 and PC games, etc, but I didn't really find any old games. Didn't look too hard though. I wish I knew some Korean, it would be easier to ask around for stuff.
