Sebadoh - III
Apples in Stereo - Velocity of Sound. I still maintain that this is good. Not fecksellent but ok
Every single song on Sonic Nurse (Sonic Yewth) is good. I'm gonna get it on vinyl too, since it has really nice coverart.
Been meaning to look into Public Image since they have Johnny Rotten and they're indeed good, check their myspace
Daniel Johnston - Fun

Not quite as good as their two later CD's, but still quite the interesting listen since all of their CD's are based on a Sci-Fi Comic Book story. I've been told they sound like Rush, but seeing as how I haven't listened to Rush, I can't say whether it's true or not.

"You are the Hero of Tomorrow!"
Been absent on this thread a while, mostly had my head in jazz.
Back again to Miles Davis--the great thing with his catalog is that it is so large and has so many periods you can find yourself coming back to it throughout your life, approaching it in different ways.
If I haven't mentioned the Miles Davis quintet box, this has turned into a real bargain. I scored mine for something like $40, and the thing covers "E.S.P.," "Miles Smiles," "Sorcerer," "Nefertiti" and "Miles in the Sky" plus at least a disc worth of alternate versions, never-before-released-shit etc.
And of course, My Funny Valentine is killer.
I'm messin' with the davis box sets (cellar door and bitches brew) but haven't dug deep yet so won't say more.
I've actually (as I think I mentioned above) been listening to a lot more traditional jazz--but am still stumbling as far as what to listen to by Monk. This is embarassing actually. I do really enjoy 'straight, no chaser', but some of the other titles I've heard didn't grab me right away. Perhaps some of the Monk fans want to step in and point the way toward greatness here.

Better add this to the list:iatneH wrote:Manigance - D'un Autre Sang

Wow. What a strong rhythm and great melody, this one is the best of these three so far. I definitely have a new favourite band. Now I just have to order the remastered Signe de Vie once I can next month.

Did you get Unia yet? The new Sonata record is quite theatrical. It's pretty fun.iatneH wrote:Been listening to these while I wait for my Manigance CDs to get delivered...

MadSteel: Dirty Deeds was my first CD after a Weird Al one, possibly my favorite of theirs
Sorry to keep fellating everyone but Rob's recent post reminded me to check out the Wipers and they're the shit too, at least 'Is this Real'

Right back at you, man. King Tubby and Desmond Dekker for the win.PaCrappa wrote:Spits, Black Lips and AC/DC. Man you always rock!
Seriously. Seconded.Pa: bout time you showed back up, everyone missed you
That is awesome, sir. It was the first true rock and roll record I ever saw, at my local supermarket when I was nine years old. Given my rather strict, conservative upbringing, the record reeked of pure evil.Dirty Deeds was my first CD after a Weird Al one, possibly my favorite of theirs

So of course, I was hooked immediately...
On topic: tonight, over dinner and drinks with the longtime ladyfriend:
Twilight Circus - Volcanic Dub
Zombi - Surface to Air
DJ Vadim - USSR Repertoire
Yesterday I ordered:Neon wrote:Rob's recent post reminded me to check out the Wipers and they're the shit too, at least 'Is this Real'

I'm pretty certain this will be the best thing I buy this year, especially for the dollar. You've got to hear Youth of America and the title track from Over the Edge. Is This Real? is the one I haven't heard yet.
Long story short: My daddy left in 1980 (the first time) when I was seven. Some time before I turned nine my best friend's stoner older brother gave me a tape with Dirty Deeds on one side and Back in Black on the other. And from that point on the Young brothers and Bon Scott became the strongest male influence in our house. Now look what's become of me:

Total riff raff!
Anyways, glad to be missed
I figured you'd seen my post in that guitar pic thread Neon.
And MadSteel, I had a look over this way a month or two ago and saw that you were still listening to the Earaches. Have you heard the first one, Fist Fights and Hot Love? That one has the best songs IMO.

Wow! I think I'm the only one who enjoys the wipers but is not 'blown away' by them. I have that set and as I recall the first of the three albums is the best in the set.Rob wrote:Yesterday I ordered:Neon wrote:Rob's recent post reminded me to check out the Wipers and they're the shit too, at least 'Is this Real'

Something is always nagging me with the Wipers--the feeling I've heard it all done better somewhere else, yet there's always (surprisingly) someone getting on the bandwagon with this band. I know they're obscure, but in my circles these guys have something of a following.

Yeah, Wipers are one of a few semi-popular/cult bands I ignore for years and turn out to be just my thing when I finally hear them. Melt-Banana was that band for me last year. Feels great to strike obvious gold every now and then and buy up multiple albums.
Wipers sounds the most like the 90s indie rock I like aside from maybe Sonic Youth (but the only SY album I really like is Daydream Nation). I had been listening to Hot Snakes for years and they completely ripped off a number of riffs ("Over the Edge" -> "Bye Nancy Boy" for a major one). 80s rock of any type doesn't do much for me, so that helps a lot too.
Hawkwind - Doremi Fasol Latido & Hall of the Mountain Grill -- This band's been slow to grow on me, but I love 'em now. I need more 70s rock, but I don't know what bands to check out. ??
Elliott Smith - XO
Demigod - Slumber of Sullen Eyes -- I usually don't like Euro death metal much, but this is great.
