I usually do 5. Unless I know I can beat it easily. Also, when you 1cc something, do you always do it on the hardest difficulty?

3 total credits until I get familiar with the game, then I usually just play with 1.
I got mad gigabytes.

Around here, the "standard" way most people play is one credit on "Normal" difficulty (or whatever's the default). There are a few exceptions, if you poke around the high score forum.

In any event, most here don't consider a game "beaten" unless it's done on the above settings, though messing with the setup for practice or the like is generally not looked down upon too much.

I'll use every credit I can to beat the game the first time.
From then on I'll use my own judgment for different games.

You'll find yourself enjoying (and appreciating) games if you limit to 1 credit at a time. Although there is nothing wrong with using as many credits as you want to discover/practice later levels. Just try to refrain from "credit feeding" simply to get to the end as fast as possible, thus raping any reward of accomplishment.

1 credit only. I have 1 maybe 2 1ccs on my belt but like Dave_K mentioned, you have much more appreciation for the game when you limit yourself to 1cc.

I usually play 1 credit for the majority of time.

Sometimes I get in bad mood and will play like 4-5 credit after an hour or so.

Once in a blue moon I will use a bunch (maybe 10 give or take) just to see later levels and see how hard it is.

When I play 2 player simultaneous we will play many credits and chit chat along the way :)

In my youth I use to credit feed. Many games of the time were check point though - none of this respawn marlarky - and that help learn the game for me!

I would credit feed more but more people are laugh at me for doing it

Depends on how I want to play. 1, or unlimited.

Some games I just try to see how many credits it takes me to finish it (or both loops) and then try to reduce that amount over time.

Until I complete the game!

Ok I restart if I mess up early on though, but rofl.

And I restart after 1 credit if there's rank.

Then again, if it's on a console I'll abuse the hell out of the practice mode.

Usually 1 credit (or how many lives that involves). Just seems simpler...

I do the same. I used to limit myself to 1 credit, but I've recently learned that I actually do far better when I'm not so hard on myself.

I use 1 credit until I get to a point where I'm just not improving anymore.

Once I get to that point I'll feed an extra 1-2 credits so I can get some practice with the spots I'm having trouble with.

Nearly always 1 credit, though there are a few rare exceptions.

One time I used more than one credit in DDP (in MAME), just to see what the last level looked like. I felt really dirty afterwards...

As many as they give me, how can anyone think these games are hard?

Depends on the game, if I seriously get into it, 1 credit only, if I'm not in the mood for a serious run, I'll credit feed for a bit to mess around. A game like Fire Shark, I limit myself to 1 credit, and 1 only, a Parodius, Gradius, or R-Type game I'll feed for a bit though I've been guilty of letting the continue timer run down to 0.

It depends entirely on the game.

But if I really really like the game, I'll credit feed up the wazoo, because I know I'll play the hell out of it either way, and I have better chances of mastering the later levels if I have more practice on them. Naturally, as I get better, I'll begin to pay more attention to reducing the amount of credits I use.

But like I say, it mostly depends on the game itself.

And I feel no shame in admitting that I sometimes play games on difficulty levels easier than the default. No point letting pride get in the way of enjoying a game, if you ask me. I don't have the time nor the skill to try to tackle the default of every game I play.[/i]

The few times I've credit fed a shmup I've had to take a wire brush to my skin. Unclean! Unclean!

One credit only for me, which is a shame as I will likely go to the grave having never completed some of my favourite games.

I normally only do 1 credit runs. But currently I'm playing Mushi Futari 1.5 Ultra mode, and I do about a half hour of 1 credit runs, then credit feed until level 4 to practice. Seems to be helping. As PCBs don't have practice modes like ports, it's helpful to credit feed some times to practice the tough spots in later levels.

I only ever use the one. I don't really have a problem with the idea of playing the same ol' levels over and over, and getting a bit further into the game each time (although my progress is usually faster than that). :P

2 credits seems to be the most logical way to go for me. One to get up to the current limit of your abilities, and the second familiarise yourself with the next level. For example I usually get anhiliated within 30 secs of starting level 5 of DDP, but shoving in another credit takes me up to the level 5 boss. I could just credit feed from then on, but there's no point in trying level 6 yet, because I suck too much to benifit from it.

1 credit for normal play. When I first get a game I credit feed it to see the later stages before playing seriously.

Back in the golden age of arcades (the entire 1980's decade), when a dollar could allow one the opportunity to play four 25 cent games per credit, you made sure that you could get as far into the later stages on just one credit. Why, because one was spending "real" money and it would be a waste of money & time if one did seriously screw up. Thus is one of the factors in attaining the ultimate goal of aceing a shmup (or any arcade game title for that matter) with a 1CC.

It's gravy if someone or a small group stops by and watches/admires your amazing shmup skills while you at a serious 1CC attempt. Wow, this guy or gal is pretty good! -- How long did it take to for him or her to master this arcade shmup title? ^_~

I've been playing multiple credits on ESP Ra.De. because of this. Even if I break my high score, I can continue and it'll allow me to put in my initials.

1, unless I'm playing for the first few times and want to see what's up in the further levels. Not that I'll remember by the time I actually start getting there on 1 credit. :/

Only on the 2nd credit used will the ESP.ra.de CPU allow you to insert your high score intials, any further continues results in no high score intial inputs. Please correct me if I'm wrong though. ^_~

(The above listed statement applies with Cave's Ketsui PCB as well.)
