I actually tried that, out of daft curiosity, with a controller remapped to match the rotation. It...wasn't pleasant, and I think it was more wrong than just sideways text. Anyone who knows anything about brain wiring care to hold forth on why lateral motion in vert scrollers tends to come more naturally than vertical? Could just be a stage design effect - I've never been clear how much typical hori/vert distinctions are inevitable versus a matter of convention.
