So, I played DDPDOJ for about an hour last night...

Post by ktownhero »

This game is simultaneously the hardest game I have ever played and the most fun. I've played other shmups that aren't nearly as hard, but feel frustrating. For some reason this game just doesn't frustrate me. When I make it through some crazy pattern, I just laugh... When I die, I just laugh. When my credit runs out, I start over without hesitation. For the record, on a "good" run, I only make it to stage 3 on one credit. :)

What is it about this game that makes it so fun? It's weird, bc at face value it doesn't seem all that much different from other Cave games, but it certainly is the most fun one I have played. Unfortunately, however, I haven't been able to play the original Dodonpachi, so I don't know how if that is better. But I def find DDPDOJ to be more fun the Mushi and ESPGaluda (not knocking those games, they rule too!).

It'll frustrate the hell out of you when you start trying to stockpile hypers.

I've had this sitting around for about a month now and I still havn't played it yet. Damn Sony and their import protection... shouldn't be long now though. I totally agree with you about about insanely difficult manics being less frustrating. When I play somthing like Image fight, I feel weak when I get mown down by a single stray bullet, so much so that I always end up throwing down my pad and stomping off. But with something like Ketsui, Touhou games on lunatic or ESP.Ra.De, the challenge gets so great that I just feel damn good for making it to level 4. DDPDOJ announces its intentions on the front cover; your ship has already been shot down, and the pilot is hugging it in a hopeless manner. Call me a masochist, but I honestly can't wait to be completely anihilated by this game :)

Are there any games that are comparable in terms of dynamics and challenge?

The only way I'm getting up to stage 3 on one credit in this game is in no bullet mode.
I just put it in again now and it just feels cheap at times.

I wish I could feel the same way about DOJ...

It was a blast for the first few hours I played it. Then I started to learn things... The chaining mechanic and hypers. Once you start playing for score, this game will become one of the most frustrating shmups you'll ever play.

-Insane difficulty
-Immensely rigid chaining/scoring mechanic
+Excellent music
+Excellent artwork

When I get a cab and replace my PS2 ports with the PCBs, this is one I won't be picking up. An unbelievably frustrating game

Then don´t! Try to 1cc it first before thinking about score.
It is difficult enough already, and you´ll have lots of fun with it. :)

I think I would not like it nearly as much as I do know if I´d indeed pay attention to chaining for improved score.

@ktownhero: I played DoJ first as well, before trying DDP, and I think if that´s the route you´ll go you´ll find DDP underwhelming compared to DOJ.
If I´d tried DDP first before DoJ I might have appreciated it much more than I do now. :?

I've thought about replacing my PS2 port with PCB the since it will get me away from the dreaded "restart fever". I think I make better progress with PCBs because I can't easily restart so I always play full credits instead of restarting the first stage half a dozen times because of broken chains or stupid deaths.

So true. You should never even think about score until you can comfortably 1cc a game.

The DVD that comes with it shows a super player 1cc'ing both loops, but even s/he gets smacked around a lot by the true last boss.

The DDP franchise is the only instance I can think of where I can say I enjoy getting my ass kicked. DDPDOJ is only frustrating if you're trying to play for score. But picking up just to see how far you can get in between study makes the game that much more fun to play. I'm almost afraid to master it cause that might mean I won't want to play it anymore

If mastering means getting a full-chain 2 loop clear, I don't think you hae to worry about that.

It kicks my ass every time I play it and I'm pretty sure I've never made much further than the third level but the sheer beauty of it and the stunning music keep puling me back to it.

Love it, but being the person I am, I go for score right on the get go, and DOJ hates me for it.

I completely agree with the TC. Exactly how I felt about DOJ when I first played it. The only reason I haven't continued playing it to death, is because I want to 1cc ESPgaluda first (yes I suck so bad I can't even 1cc ESP... but I'm getting damn close). Also, DDP is so close in awesomeness to DOJ, I don't know which I want to dive into first after clearing ESPgaluda.

I need a picture of myself playing DOJ so I can photoshop over it: "Help me, I'm being abused."

Damn I love that game, but all it ever gives me is an ass-kickin'.

I'm actually playing Mushi in this picture, but I look the same when playing DOJ. I probably wouldn't stand like that if I wasn't playing on my friends tiny TV. I had to start leaning against the bed because my legs and back were beginning to ache.

The problem is, unless I can get the extra ships at 10 000 000 and 30 000 000, (PS2 version gives them by default, should it be something else?) I have no hope whatsoever to reach the stage 3 boss...

Or, it might be the fact that I really don't feel like playing with anything else but A-E, which is not really known as the survival player's choice... I can't really use bombs (I always hit the bomb button too late) so I figured that if I have no bomb-using skills, then why not trade the bombs out for better weapons?

No problem playing for score. I can't very well pussy-run my way through even intermediate stages knowing I'm giving up points... even in games I will likely not 1CC for ages.

I figure if Cave really wanted us to chain the extends wouldn't be so low. Save up some hypers for the end of stage 2 and both point-extends can be had by stage 4.

No way! :) Dodonpachi DOJ (and Ibara) is probably the hardest shooters I've played! Still great though, especially when I somehow manage to escape a certain death dodging through a million bullets!
