Fourth place? I thought this genre was somewhat more popular of the old school style gaming and expected to be 3rd place. Then again this poll is rather small. Well besides that, could it be possible that there is still a demand for shmups outside the hardocore public.

Well I guess I should check in later seeing as the poll closes at 9 PM.

Shmups aren't really even dead though. They don't need a revival. Adventure games on the other hand, how I miss you...

This is what I was thinking. If you keep up on imports and doujins, shmups are anything BUT dead. 2D fighters are doing pretty good too. Light-gun games are what I'd like to see a revival of =) I voted for shmups anyways though, just to show support for the genre \m/

Objection! I agree that shmups aren't dead, but neither are adventure games.

Not really. There's a few, but a lot of games that pass for adventure games (i.e. Phoenix Wright) are more like interactive fiction games.

C'mon guys.
Hell yeah they need a revival. I wouldn't call them popular in the least.

Anyways, so what, it's a GameFaqs poll. Big deal.

For the record, I have never had the chance to play a laserdic adventure game. Always wanted to try Brain Dead 13 when I was a kid.

I would love the comeback of sierra/monkey-islandesque graphic adventures, but americans seem to have forgotten how to draw since the globalizaton/crappization of the drawing style (every single cartoon since a decade looks the same, with that simplified-disjointed style a-la disney channel-cartoon network (they should get arrested for that) so I don't really want another omg!!!whacko adventure like day of the tentacle.
So I think that genre is definitely dead, and shmups FTW!!!! :D
Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

OT a little, but adventure games aren't dead. They're far more alive than the shmups scene. You should check out the adventure gamers website and forums, there are new games being released all the time, with the odd mainstream title showing up (last year we had Broken Sword 4, Dreamfall, and the new Sam n Max episodes).

That's true. I did discount the homemade games community a lot when I said adventure games were dead. There are still lots of independent, small release, and freeware adventure games coming out.

You could probably get the Saturn version or something for peanuts off eBay or someplace like that now.

The poll is utterly pointless since I'd bet over half the voters wouldn't buy games from the genre they voted for anyway. I'm not even sure why lightgun shooters are included since most arcades still have some. A better pick there would be wargames (remember when games like PTO and Panzer General were actually well-known?) or flight simulators (Jane series, Falcon 3.0; nobody even seemed to care about the latest MS Flight Simulator).

This was my impression too.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.
