Skill consistency

Post by RotateMe »

I recently started to watch Superplays again, especially some for Ibara Arrange mode because I'm currently playing this myself. So my question is: I know it took a while until the players could play the games like this, but how long do they record, delete the record because they screw up and start over again until they are comfortable with the run they did. Or do they just say: Okay I'm good enough now, record and if they don't do some stupid mistake they have a good recorded run.

I ask this because I would be able to perform the same score for some stages like superplayers but that's just in one run out of hundred and it would take an awful lot of time to record every one of these runs.

So well if you ever did a superrun, are your skills so consistent that you get such a record after a few runs or do you too have to be lucky to get such a run?

Personally I try to practice as much as possible before trying to record anything, and if I feel confident that I can achieve what I want to achieve with a good probability, I start trying to record.

Sometimes indeed I had to make like 20 runs before I actually got to perform as good as I wanted, but really if you are careful and know what you are able to do, you can do a really good run on the first few tries.

Can't call this a "superrun" at all, but when I recorded my 99 millions run at Dodonpachi I only tried 3 or 4 times, for example.

So I wonder about the superplayers too @_@ !

I think this topic rises very interesting questions about the nature of "shmup skills" and the luck factor in shmups.
Would be nice to discuss it !

Superplay represents dedicated shumpers whom have taken their specialist game/s to such extensive levels of military precision, that it is impossible to try and comprehend the amount of trial and error these individuals go through to achieve perfection. for example my Strikers1945 2nd loop replay took 2-3years to achieve. Naturally i never cared to think about how long it was gonna take me complete the game, i just play it and play it until i achieved the feat. my best score is 1.8million, the best japanese score is 2.3million. Strikers1945 appeared in the arcades in 1996/97, and 10yrs later i still dont know how the japanese shumpers squeeze that score out. hope that gives you some understanding of what it takes to make superplay.

But now that you've achieved this, how many tries would it take you to do it again ?

Because the way you say it, it seems you've simply been training over the years by doing full runs. So now that you've reached this level, what's your Skill Consistency ? ^_^

One thing that would really interest me is something like a live shmup contest. I've never been able to join one of the shmup meets and chances are against that I will be able to for quite a long time (no holidays left this year for me and after that I'm starting to study). So the only possibility for me to see how good players consistency of skill is something like a live stream of someone playing. Would something like this be possible? If not maybe uploading the record right after playing, waiting till everybody else who competes watched it and then the next player does the same thing. Wow this sounds NEAT to me :D Anyone interested? Any ideas?

Anything that reduces the amount of concentration required will help. Lots of players just use the position of their shot to estimate where the hit box is, for example. Simple things like bullet guiding have become instinctive for more advanced players. Generally speaking, more thinking = more mistakes. There needs to be little thinking involved, and any thinking should be fast and deliberate. Indecisiveness kills.

All players fuck up at some point. They are not Gods. I watched Clover-TAC not clear ESPGaluda II once. It was surreal, to say the least.

Lol that's why I had my best run at dimahoo for the current german stgt when my TV was running in the background with an interesting poker match going on!

it's an interesting question, and i think different from game to game. something like dodonpachi or ikaruga is so strict on timing that most good players can pull off similar results consistently. but a lot of the time, at the end of a super-play, it's rare to see a score achieved on the first run of that day. like the ketsui dvd... they had some shit runs that day before hitting the scores they did. it's different game to game, i suppose. the ddp doj arika dvd is the opposite - he scores 1.89 billion on his first credit; and at the start, it looks like he's deciding which ship he wants to beat the game with today...

Interesting. From which difference between Ketsui and DDP DOJ does this come ? Does Ketsui have a higher luck factor ? Why ?

not luck really. but in ketsui, it's beneficial score-wise to be in very close proximity to the enemies (risk vs. reward factor). so you're more likely to bite a bullet if you're in the top half of the screen so much.

When I feel that something good is coming from the combo study+practice I start recording every run until I record something relevant. No matter how much time I'm going to waste (quite a lot, usually).

Skill consistency - Funnily enough, I was mentioning this after coming off a credit of Ketsui in the arcade last week. I made the point that I used to have near 100% consistency on the 1985-92 arcade shooters (once I'd 1CC'd them). Yet the modern Cave manics with their tightness/risk-reward, crossfire etc. require a lot more repetitive play to achieve skill-consistency. The consistency can still be achieved....but it takes longer.

Don't get me wrong though, the older shoot'em ups weren't all a walk in the park. Many required a lot of learning and several of them were 1 life games ie. lose your 1st life at the wrong point and its goodnight.

The modern shooters allow recovery from life loss.

I guess the point that I'm clumsily trying to make is that once I've 1CC'd a Cave shooter, it doesn't necessarily mean that I'll do it every credit from then on.
Whereas, skill consistency to the loop and beyond on the 85-92 shooters was almost guaranteed once the first few 1CCs had been achieved.

Very well put - you should make it the logo of the site or something!
