Are you all as good as I think you are?
OK i'm new here but not new to shmuppers.
I liked to think I was alright at them but then I saw some ridiculous scores on here and every other post goes on about 1ccing the whole game. I'm no where near this but I have been able to finish games using the 2 or 3 credits you're provided with.
I think the trouble I have is that I don't have enough time to dedicate myself to the task (that and I end up buying something new which distracts me). For example over the last couple of months I've bought Last Hope, THE, Karous and Trizeal.
So many games, so little time.
Anyway, stop showing off. You're making me feel bad.

There are some quite skilled players here, but also plenty of more casual shmuppers, myself being one of them. It's also worth noting, I think, that there are few shmuppers who are equally good at everything: most tend to "specialize," at least to a degree, in some games, but not excel quite so much at others.
In any event, there's no real reason to feel self-conscious here, there's room for everyone. Of course, if you start bragging about your "skillz" when you really don't have any then you're probably in trouble, but my instincts tell me you shouldn't fall into that category.

All errors are intentional but mistakes could have been made.

Or they know the secrets of the game you can find on the strategy board or elsewhere on the internetTigershark wrote:If I see that someone can get xmillion on the first stage and I'm only getting 500,000 odd I know I'm not doing something right.

I'm not even close to being elite at any shmups, some I practice and get decent at, others destroy me no matter what. As long as you're having fun while playing shmups, the scores on the scoreboards should never bother you at all (besides these guys worked hard to get as good as they are now, they had to start somewhere).

I usually get bored before i've mastered a certain stage in any game. It's impossible for me to practice something like DoDonPachi simply because by the time i get to the 3rd stage in one life, i'm pretty well sick of the first 2 stages. Then, since i'm bound to eat it on an unfamiliar stage AND i'm not interested in getting back to it, the game gets put down. If i didn't have multiple games to bounce around to, i doubt i'd bother with shooters at all.

You get better high scores and (most importantly) save lots of money by just playing one game over and over. I've 1CC'ed a few games here and there only because I've bought them and been too cheap to buy a new game to distract me. That's the way to do it.Tigershark wrote:I think the trouble I have is that I don't have enough time to dedicate myself to the task (that and I end up buying something new which distracts me). Yeah, see the thing is you're just looking at all the scoreboards and looking at the highest scores for each and thinking "wow these guys are so much better than me", but for the most part you don't see the same people in the top spots for different games. There are very few who place near the very top for multiple games (Icarus :/), but for the most part people in the top positions aren't in those places for more than a couple games (or very high in one game and just average for others, etc.), and usually the games are similar enough that skills carry over (ie games made by the same company).Tigershark wrote:I think the trouble I have is that I don't have enough time to dedicate myself to the task (that and I end up buying something new which distracts me). Also don't obsess over getting a 1cc. Just find the game you like the most and play the shit out of it. If it's a really though game you may never 1cc it, but the skills will stay with you and as you dedicate yourself to different games, you'll be able to clear stuff.

Oh another small tidbit, there was an interview with one of the Ketsui players featured on the superplay DVD, I believe it was SWY-Yusemi or something (if you're familiar with Japanese players you probably know who I'm talking about). They asked him what other game(s) he's 1cced, and he had only cleared 1 other game, I forget what it was but i was some old ass game. So this was one of the world champs and he'd pretty much never played any other game but Ketsui seriously.

In reality I'm a sentient artificial intelligence with a taste for scrolling shootemups.
Just kidding.
In seriousness I buy just as many games as the rest of the forumites do. However I always stick to playing just one or two constantly until I hit a target or get bored of it (whichever comes first) before I move on.

Yusemi-SWY holds multiple high-score records (and he's not on the Ketsui DVD), as does SYO-sama (who is on the Ketsui DVD). I think you're referring to the guy who was playing the Tiger Schwert.Dandy J wrote:Oh another small tidbit, there was an interview with one of the Ketsui players featured on the superplay DVD, I believe it was SWY-Yusemi or something (if you're familiar with Japanese players you probably know who I'm talking about). I'm good at the Gradius, Sala and Parodius games (and at horis in general, perhaps), but I don't have tons of innate ability, and most shmups require a few weeks of my time to 1CC. Unfortunately, I do tend to lose interest in my score after I've finished a loop, except where my faves are concerned...
I've never really been interested in the past, but I should probably start taking part in the scoring threads; they're probably the best way for all of us to improve.

I felt the same way when i first started posting on this forum. After doing a bit of research everyone said that espgaluda was the esiest cave game to 1cc and it seemed that almost everyone has 1cced this game. However, after playing this game for over a month straight i still cant score more then 2 million or beat the 5-1 boss. I have gotten to the 5-1 boss with 3 lives in stock and choked horribly. So what im trying to say it that you are not alone.
