Ikaruga on Screw Attack's Top 10 Gamecube Games

Post by Acid King »

Self explanatory. It placed 9th. Whoever is playing in the gameplay demonstration is pretty awful.

Some funny videos on that site, like "Angry Video Game Nerd: Atari 5200"

From what game is the music playing at 5:50 (Atari 5200 video)? I think it's one of the SNES Donkey Kong games. Who can tell me?

Sorry Ceph, I was gonna listen to it and see if I knew, but I crushed my speakers over my head when they trotted out that tired, fuckwitted "Metroid Prime faithfully updated everything that makes Metroid unique" lie. :P

It's surprising that it's on there to begin with. Also, they don't even mention the chaining, just the bullet absorbing, probably because they ignore the score system. Maybe that's why Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun are championed by so many people that don't really play shooters because they just don't play them for score. They play on Saturn mode and gradually leveling their weapons, or they play Ikaruga and just focus on color switching to get through patterns. Maybe Gradius V will make some top 10 PS2 lists.

Ikaruga seems to be THE example of "shmups are still alive and kicking".
Quite a bunch of YouTube shmup replays have comments under them like "Looks like Ikaruga". I bet that it introduced a lot of new people to shmups.
I know that it did that with me. So finally, you might not have to tell people about shmups by saying "it´s like R-Type or Gradius".

And let´s not forget this one:

"Ikaruga is one of those games that comes along, kicks incomprehensible amounts of ass, but nobody notices because everyone's too busy playing dog shit football games."

Also, AVGN is THE BOMB. Nearly all of his videos are great. Not only does he rant like a maniac, he has a lot of points and good observation in his vids (Check out Simons Quest or the Top Gun videos). And the beer bottle in the Atari 5200 lid? Genius. I read that he switched to a less time-consuming job to make new videos more often.
THE BULLETS ARE NOW DIAMONDS!

Surely the non-danmaku feel of Ikaruga made it very popular among people scared by heavy bullet barrage games, in particular Cave's ones.......it was like this to me! THEN I discovered Cave, and realized they were great games as well. :)

That guys rants are the best.

Personally, Ikaruga was my first commercial shmup. I had been playing Freeware shmups for some time before that, but I still have sort of a bias towards it when asked about favorite shmups or gamecube games.

Ikaruga was the first game I really played for score and the first game to give me restart fever. I owned a ton of shooters before that for the Playstation, Saturn and Dreamcast but ignored the scoring systems for the most part. I think online scoreboards for games like this help pique peoples interest. I'm damn sure Geometry Wars wouldn't have been nearly as popular if it was a standalone game with no online scoreboards.
