Currently it's Dragon Saber's soundtrack (especially the volcano stage & Dragon Spirit remixed songs), and Pulstar's that are my favourites.

Wicked stuff mate! You've got one of my favourite tunes of all time that i'd completely forgotten about-'elemental master', 4th one down-GENIUS! You don't know how much hearing that tune has just cheered me up!

Excellent taste! withot doubt one of the best I`vew come across, Touhou rules!it290 wrote:I've been jamming to the music from Imperishable Night lately. Damn it's good -- it's exactly what videogame music should be. I can't wait to get EoSD and PCB so I can check out the tunes in those, too.
Other than that, I really like the music from Thunderforce III and Hellfire (Gen). Hellfire in particular is some of the best music I've heard the 'ol Genesis crank out.

Some of the best tracks I've heard in shmups:
Black Rain (Arranged Version) - Technosoft // Hyper Duel
Very fast paced track that adds to the pace of the stage it accompanies. The arranged version puts in some really excellent rock guitar to get your blood pumping.
Stab and Stomp! (Arcade Version) - Raizing // Battle Garegga
Another fast paced track which makes boss fighting so much more exciting
(Especially against the two Black Hearts...)
Fortress City (Studio Siesta Extended Remix) - Cave // Espgaluda
Not exactly *in-game* but an excellent trance version of one of the game's best tracks (the other being the original version of Huge Battleship Eriniesu - Stage 3's BGM)
INTERCEPTION - Noisy Town (Arcade Version) - Cave // Ketsui
I like technoey music, and this one is great for a stage one BGM.
Subversive Awareness (Arcade Version) - Raizing // Battle Garegga
A very ambient track that fits the stage perfectly. Probably my all time fave next to Stab and Stomp!
Got a lot more fave tunes, these are my five top faves.

I love the two tracks in Thunder Force V - forgot thier names - something like 'Justice Sword' that plays when your ship is recieving it's upgrade as it blasts into space and another is the one that plays over your battle with the last boss - that big green butterfly/moth robot guy.
I love alot of the music from the Snes R-Type III - The Third Lightning.
Lords of Thunder has some pretty bitchin' tunes as well.
Really, i like to listen to Children of Bodom when i play shmups.

However, Perfect Cherry Blossom, Imperishable Night and Embodiment of Scarlet Devil will always come first in my book as far as shmup music goes. No competition.

I thoroughly enjoy the music in Darius Twin, and Darius Force. Those two games have about the best video game music ever made if you ask me, gotta love that SPC700 on the SNES. Darius Gaiden has a couple good tracks, but most of it is that weird Japanese opera stuff...definitely not my cup of tea. I'm sorry but I think the music in G-Darius is terrible, a completely random techno-synth headache with no rhythm and no beat is the best term I could come up with to describe it. It's definitely a letdown when you compare it to the music in the previous Darius games, in fact I think the whole game is a letdown.
I like the music in the Gradius games also, and Raiden. Gate of Thunder is just plain awesome. I never got much into R-Type, though the music is okay...

But really, anyone who doesn't mention Apidya can't have played the game
Everyone, please, get an Amiga emulator, a copy of Apidya (I think it's being distributed freely now at www.back2roots.org), and go play it NOW
Not only is one of the 3 best horizontal shmups EVER, it also has the BEST MUSIC EVER IN A SHMUP, and everyone is MISSING OUT.
