The Official Shmups Patch Competition!

Post by Stormowl »

I've been away from the forum for about a year and a half now due to intense studies in air force flight school. however one day when picking up another patch for my uniform i had an idea. what would, say, the R-Type squadrons have worn on their flight suits?

Which brings me to this competition: design a shmup squadron/flight/random patch, and i will have the winning one made and sent out to whoever wants one (at the cost of having it done and shipping).

DESIGN RULES:

- shapes should not be too complicated
- please no weird stuff...remember i have to take this up to a bunch of crusty ex F-14 jocks to have it done. a silhouette of a vic viper is good, a no-pan reko riding a giant beetle is not.
- the larger and higher resolution design of a patch you can submit to me, the better it will look.
- there is no limit to the number of sumbmissions you make
- be creative!

post all submissions in a conservative size in this thread. try to save a large high resolution version to send to me via pm/email if yours wins.

here are some examples of patches i have, other aviators have, and where it would be worn on a flight suit today (at least in the USAF/USN):

the contest will start today and end may 15. once all the submissions have been made i will make a poll for us to vote on the winning patch.

(mods - is there a chance you could sticky this? i got the ok from you guys to do this about 6 months ago, i've just been so busy i've only now gotten around to doing it.)

This looks very cool! I'm going to tell my mom, she wanted to join the Air Force but got into something else instead, and I rave about shooting games all the time.

I'm not in a position to design one, but I absolutely look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with. I might even come up with some ideas at random, we'll see how it goes. 8)

I think it's related to DJ/turntables, but I don't remember exactly which company or anything like that. (I might be wrong, but that's where I first saw it. Looking at the body of the ant, you'll see that it looks like a turntable's cartridge assembly, the bottom being where the cartridge is attached to the tone arm, if these are even the correct terms. I have a couple of slip mats that I got from someone with the design on them, but I checked and am not sure of where they are right now.)

Fantastic idea, mate. The top-right one already looks fairly appropriate - you could just change the words to SHAVING IS BORING. :D

Damn the no fat chicks one is really great! I would join just for that alone.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Should submissions be posted on the thread or sent in PM to you, Stormowl? Any limit to the number of submissions per person?

pleast post submissions in the thread (in a conservative size, try to save a large high resolution version of it to pm to me if yours is chosen to be made) and there is no limit to the number of sumbissions you can make. the more the better!

(initial post now updated with these rules)

I have always wanted to see the lightning bolt of Team Thunder Force 222 form TFV to become a patch. I do not have the picture manipulation skills to create a blueprint for it though. :-(

Shame most Macross shmups range from average to shit, because a UN Spacy patch would be awesome.

If I can find the time, and if the competition is still on, I'll try to throw something together.

Simple and sweet: My Thunder Force V patch. The left side is awkward looking because I had to delete the "Thunder Force 222" text and my image editing skills suck hardcore. If anyone can clean it up, I would be very appreciative. I'd be willing to pay to have this made into a patch even if it doesn't win the competition. I've wanted a TF Lightning bolt patch since the game came out. If you could hook me up stormowl, that'd be sweet.

Now if only I could remember where I've seen that before...

Hmm....

Wait a minute!

On second thought, maybe it's not such a good idea to wear a patch like that :P
