Stonekeep update: Game runs fine, but it doesn't like running in a DOS emulator on a dual processor system. The game was crashing every time I entered a new level. I figured out what was the problem though; I had to kill BitComet and Opera to get it to stop crashing. Stonekeep is very picky about what programs it has to share memory with. (In other words, Stonekeep is selfish and wants to hog all the memory for itself).

I love this game because despite the somewhat primitive graphics and cheesy MIDI music, the game has atmosphere. Although it's just corrodors and 90-degree turns, I still feel like I'm in some cold, unforgiving dungeon way underground. And while it's MIDI, the composers did an excellent job with a limited music format. I used to run this game on an old 100MHZ PC and it had a crap MIDI interface, as did the computers I ran the game on as time marched on. Finally, on this uber-pc, I can fully realize what the composers intentions were.

It's too bad that this game got poor reviews due a seven-year produciton time and failure to living up to its hype. But I don't care, the game roxs in my opinion.

I own 1 and 3 on the NES, but it wasn't until Mega Man and Bass on the GBA that I became a fan.
I love that game so much. Easily my favorite in any Mega Man series.

I just now (finally) purchased Gradius III/IV for PS2, & I'm working on Gradius III. Man, do I suck. I can't seem to get past the first stage hardley - I get to the point where I'm powered up (missiles, 2 options), & I die. I can make it past the next part (strangely enough) powered down & get a speed-up & missiles by the boss. When I do make it to the boss fully powered up I usually blow it & die from one of those stupid spiders.

By the time I get to the second level, I'm desperate for powerups. I can usually get about half-way through, maybe a bit more, but generally get overwhelmed by the bubbles. I have found that it pays to pick up options in that area & skip the laser until the boss - the bullets just seem a tad more effective in tight spaces than the laser. However, since I've had the PS2 conversion, I've only made it to the "amoeba" boss once. Shoot the eye!

Yep, I suck. I actually was doing better at Gradius IV (surprisingly enough) - I managed to get to level 3, though that was kiboshed quickly. I guess I'm not a Gradius natural, although I've done okay w/ Gradius V (3rd level fairly consistently) & the GB Gradius games. I'm even a tad better at Gradius 3 on SNES.

I also recently picked up Xexyz for NES (for $1). I forgot how difficult the game was. It'll take a while to get going w/ it, but at least now the cartridge works since I replaced my 72-pin connector.

So you've never played part 2? Well, there's your problem.

How can you not like 8?

Mega Man and Bass? WTF is that? I assume that's a bastardization of an equally goofy, but not quite as bad Japanese name?

I don't really like Megaman 8 either. No explanation as to why, it's just somehow much less fun than what came before. The English voice acting has entertainment value though.

Rockman and Forte

You nailed it with the equally goofy, but not quite as bad.

Don't worry about it, mate - III (arc) and IV are easily the most difficult and capricious titles in the series, and more or less everybody struggles with those bubble stages for a good while before their 'eureka!' moment comes... :P

Not on the NES. Like I said, I've got the AC now so I've been playing them in sequential order. I lost the will to fight on in 4 because it lost the soul of the series...

Also, I will not hear of anyone badmouthing MM&B/RM&F.
Ever.

Today its Zing Zing Zip. Managed to reach stage 6, but silly season starts from there and the 2nd loop is truly nasty.

There's got to be a programmer link between Zing Zing Zip and Cyvern - the Stage 1 Boss final pattern is the same as the ST2 Cyvern Boss. (It says Allumer/Tecmo on Zing Zing Zip). Can anyone confirm the link?

EDIT: The Zing Zing Zip ST5 Boss final pattern is also the same as Cyvern's ST3 Boss pattern.

Been playing Beneath A Steel Sky, it's awesome and it's freeware so go download it. Also spent some time today playing Robocod (ok it's the DS version but it's still an old game, right?)

I have been playing some Gradius, Shao Lin's Road, Twinbee, Tutankham, and some others in Konami Arcade DS. I have also been playing some games in the Konami MSX Collection for Saturn, some Gradius Gaiden PSX, and some Mega Man III b/w GB.

Mega Man 2 NES was actually the first Mega Man game I played. It was only a rental, but it got me hooked on the series. I have the MMAC for GCN, but I still plan to get the NES 2. I also have 3 for NES, 8 for PSX (I want to get the Saturn one), and Dr Wily's Revenge and III for GB (I want to get IV and V back. Trading frenzies suck. V GB is especially cool since it has robot masters unique to it).

It's an allright game. I can't believe you've never heard of it. I prefer the Super Fami version over the GBA though... U___U

While not perfect, the GBA one is a good port, though. However, though I like the game, it's not one of my favorites. Poor Megaman/Rockman was overshadowed by Bass/Forte in the game.

Civilization 2

I really wish I had brought my starcraft disks back to school.

Twiddle: Let's play some CS sometime; actually that might be worthy of its own topic. I've actually been playing condition zero a lot lately, a lot of servers for that are deathmatch type games now.

Oh, yeah - definetly not one of my fav's either. Not when compared to MM Wily Wars, MM7, MMX 2, or Zero 3. ^___^ (and that's not counting the NES games)

MM7 is the worst in the (regular) series, IMO. It just doesn't feel right somehow... then again the same could be said of Wily Wars. RM&F is a bit of a cheap remix in some ways, and the weapons aren't the best, but I think they nailed the feel, and it is pretty amazing for a SFC game.

As for what I've been playing, Metal Slug and Garou as always... guess those aren't really all that old though. Also been enjoying a bit of Sonic 1 since I finally got my Genesis hooked up w/RGB, and some Guerilla War on the side. Oh yeah.. and Contra via PocketNES for the toilet breaks.

The Parodius titles, maybe it's the humor that draws me in, or maybe it's that familiar Gradius gameplay that keeps me playing.

Sonic Boom PCB Sega 1987. ST6. Like all the Sega games of that era, it doesn't let you continue from the later levels (not that I would  ).
I'll give the 1CC a go.

Nothing but Parodius and Twinbee games right now, I get the urge to play something, I wind up playing each game in the series over and over till I get my fill, then I move on. For these two games I never stop playing them.

I have been playing quite a bit HEROES of Might & Magic on the GBC.
Hey very nice soundtrack there. I bet it wasn't exactly the best selling game of all times but it's jolly good fun.
And as someone said here, I'm ALWAYS playing old games. Most of the time, actually. I'd say a 100:1 ratio on time spent playing old games/new games.
Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?
