What old games are you playing?

Post by FatCobra »

Forget all these fancy-shamncy next-gen systems and their flashy games and weirdo controllers for one sec, and tell us what moldy old games you are playing at the moment! Just because it's old doesn't mean it's not fun anymore!

I'm playing thru Stonekeep at the moment. It was an old dungeon crawler made by the guys at the now-defunct Interplay. And I think it's a pretty good game. I love its atmosphere. Getting it to run on Windows XP was a bitch though, as it's one of those old cranky DOS games. Well, it wasn't that hard, because DOSBox took care of that. I still have the original CD, so I ripped it into an ISO and mounted it onto a virtual drive so the game won't lag because it needs to read something on a slow-ass CDROM (it happens quite alot in this game). If you play this game, make sure you get the patch for it! Otherwise you won't be able to proceed thru the game at one point.

I'm ALWAYS playing old games. I still keep up with the new stuff, but i'm usually playing pre-last gen era software, everyday.

So with that said right now i'm enjoying Silhouette Mirage on Saturn and Gunner's Heaven on PSX. I also got my hands on a copy of Loom the other day and am amazingly disappointed... but i haven't played to far in.

Super Shinobi II, trying to get the Shinobi bonus for every level. It seems you have to sacrifice the No Ninjitsu bonus in order to get the Special (no hit) bonus on some bosses, like the second. Either way, I'm having a blast just experimenting with techniques and strategies to maximize my score.

I can't keep up with the next-gen stuff because I can't afford it.
That might be a blessing in disguise though, so I might as well as play the last-gen stuff and enjoy it. 8)

Hmm, I remember that one being quite fun but a little on the easy side.
It´s no Monkey Island quality but it´s nice the way it is though.

But it´s so old, I hadn´t played too much adventures yet at that point so I may be looking at one of the early experiences with pink glasses on. :?

On topic:

haven´t played much retro recently, though the mention of a Speedball 2 sequel or update the other day really made me long for that game again. :P

Aye, old games are pretty much all I play these days. Currently ripping Parodius Da! a new one on the Saturn deluxe pack, and playing a lot of Moai-Kun and Bio Senshi Dan on the side. :)

Aside from World of Warcraft (which isn't old) and Supreme Commander (which also isn't old), I've been delving back into Beach Life, SimCity 2000, Theme Park, C&C Tiberian Sun and Homeworld 2.

I likes me some RTS and resource management sims.

Fucking OUT ZONE dude!

Man, whenever I've had enough of the shitty broken games I play all day, and feel burned out, I just play Out Zone and it suddenly all makes sense again!

I was playing Outzone last night with a friend, he didn't like it but I think it's great. I'm currently playing through Castlevania SOTN on the PS1.

I just checked out a cutsey action platformer called Rapid Angel for the PSX. It's pretty cool. Anyone ever play it?

I'll whip out my SNES on rare occasion (played some uniracers a few weeks ago), but for the most part the oldest systems I play are my GBA and my Saturn. Sad I know. I'm currently playing through Ledgend of Oasis on my Saturn, and Densetsu no Stafi 3 on my GBA, aside from the 2-3 shooters that I'm always playing. Also Toy Commander on my Dreamcast, but that's even more not old =P

I basically only play old games.

Right now I'm working on Warriors of the Eternal Sun for the Genesis (good fun). Up next is Faery Tale Adventure for the Genesis, which I'm pretty excited about. It looks really interesting. Thrown in there are some occasional epic Warlords 4 battles and I'm also working to get a higher score for the Dragon Spirit NES high score thread.

I'm working on Rayman 2 on the Dreamcast. I just rebeat MGS1 and 2 for the fourth or fifth time. I also beat the new Zelda game just before those two. I will soon dig into Super Paper Mario once it's released.

I've been playing a lot of my Saturn I've recently purchased. Blast Wind, Radiant Silvergun, and the old Gradius games make up my day mainly. I also play Soldier Blade a lot. I have Hyper Duel on the way, and when it arrives, I'll be playing the hell out of that too.

Got Mega Man Anniversary Collection a few weeks ago, blazed through the first three games, then got to 4 a week ago and suddenly lost the urge to continue...

1 is still my favorite, despite the graphical and audio superiority of 2 and 3.

Mega Man Anniversary Collection is a superb game. I really liked Mega Man 6, because the Rush Suits were a lot of fun to play around with, but if i had to pick a favorite, it would be 2. 2 was my first classic Mega Man game (not counting MMX). Finish up the collection, the rest of the games are really good too. Well, except maybe 8.....

I got a chance to play a few electromechanical pinball machines earlier this week when I made a stop at the Pinball Hall of Fame in Vegas, as well as a number of newer pins. Didn't have as much time to spend there as I would have liked though. Haven't played games much at all this week since I was on vacation.

I was actually fortunate enough to obtain the Galaxian 3 PSX port recently. Obviously, it's nothing special gameplay wise as it's just hyper grainy fmv backdrops with flat-shaded polygonal enemies you shoot with your one laser weapon but just the simple fact that i get to own such a rare game out of the Galaxian/Galaga/Gaplus series is really cool. It's actually kind of fun to play a little too - it has a cool feel to it, it's just overly simplistic. I haven't played the Zolgear part yet...

EDIT - i just read that it's less ugly than Project Dragoon and that the disc is unfortunatley missing a third episode that was produced.

Been playing my Gun Frontier PCB today - (460,030 ST6 :? ). Gemini Wing yesterday (1CC). Prehistoric Isle 1 before that (1CC) and was surprised at how good Dragon Sabre is  - Music, graphics - Its been so many years since I played it in the arcade, that I forgot what a gem it is.
