They both have such excellent crafted minature joystick built in and very responsive too. I don't know how the JPN version of NGP-C Cotton shmup title fares -- a USA NGP-C version of Cotton was supposed to be released but was cancelled at the last minute, thanks to SNK USA.
Yeah.. cause they just ripped the thumb-stick off of the Neo-CD pad and shrunk it down about 25%.

Also, NGPC Cotton is a total waste. What I would have given for a portable Pulstar or Blazing Star. :(
Yeah, I don't know why handhelds get so few shmups. NGPC has quality titles, but the lack of shmups is disappointing.

I think it'd be amazing if they can get other titles on the DS. I hope this trend continues. If it does, I'll make sure I'll get me a DS. Can you all imagine playing your favorite shmup anywhere? Some DoDonPachi sessions in class?! That is, if they have tate options for the DS. 8)

I bought Sagaia for the original Game Boy for five bucks the other day. All I have to play it on is my original Game Boy, which I haven't played in ages... I might have to agree with GaijinPunch and say shmups and handhelds don't quite mix :) This screen is blurry as hell!

However I think the PSP has the screen real estate to accomodate a shoot-em-up. I've been playing Salamander Portable on it and it's great. Too bad it's the exact opposite of a tate screen, wide horizontal, and even if you turn it on it's side, really too thin for a proper tate experience, not to mention the lack of buttons on either side. Maybe Gumpei Yokoi had the right idea with the Wonderswan...

Not funny (and I took the comment too seriously. Sorry about that. If you want to hit me on the head with the baka mallet feel free to do so). I think the reasons handhelds haven't gotten many shmups is for the same reason consoles don't get many. Many of the companies still making shmups make them for arcades and port them to the current hardware or the hardware closest to the arcade. Also, there actually are a ton of shmups for PSP, if you count collections. Not many exclusives, though.

I don't get the crappy screen argument. The DS is backlit and lacks blur. The GBA has backlit models and even the original lacks blur. I heard the PSP has ghosting, but has one of the biggest hand held system screens around. Oddly enough, the GBC screen is smaller than the GB b/w one, but shmups are much easier to play on it because the screen is easier to see due to a lack of blur and a much sharper screen.

True, the Wii and DS are leading in Japan, but the XBox 360 has been gaining momentum recently...enough to be snagging exclusives from PlayStation 3! But that still might not be enough to actually get Sony-brainwashed retailers to carry XB360 stuff. But then again, wouldn't game companies actually be able to save money by distributing a game on XBLA? No?

Well, at least we have Raiden IV coming to XBLA...right? Now that's gonna rock!

And now I'm hearing about Mishihimesama DS...holy crap...if this isn't April Fools then Cave must be head over heels...

The most recent info states it'll be a full disc release, not an XBLA download.

Small = crappy...especially for a game like Ketsui.

I'll admit, a handheld can come in handy when you're on the run. I just think it's silly to play one at home when a large TV and half decent speakers are many, many fold better.

I was trying to explain the opposite. I was saying that there are far more factors other than screen size. Many more recent screens minimize blur and are clearer than earlier screens like those of the GameGear or the b/w GB. Handheld screens went a long way since the days of the old GB, a fact that shouldn't be ignored.

It's funny. The GB b/w has a bigger screen, but the GBC is much better suited to shmups. Why? The GBC has a clearer screen and lacks blur. Proof that there is more to screens than the size.

It's a bit unfair to judge how Ninja Gaiden DS looks from that video. The video of the game in that YouTube video isn't very clear. I'm more worried about how the game will control. Tecmo is planning to use stylus controls for almost every action in the game.

Imo the problem with the Ninja gaiden DS tate demonstration is that you just can't play fast action games this way for a long time. It's quite uncomfortable and if your're on a train for example that goes a little shakey you probably won't enjoy it that much either - you just need a grip on the console. Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty sure it works fine for turn based games or quick stuff like Brain Training but a shmup...well, I have my doubts.
On the other hand I don't believe the argument about the tiny screen holds up very well. The screens of the DS or the PSP are way better than the blurry one of the original GB, resolution is fine too and if this still isn't enough you can use a bright colour for the bullets to make them stand out properly. Sure it's more fun to sit at home in front of a tated 22' monitor while shmupping away with an arcade stick but that is probably also the case when compared to playing at a noisy and smokey arcade full of shadey characters...

I understand that, but the clearest 2 inch screen in the world is still a 2 inch screen. "You can't polish a piece of shit" I believe is the saying.

I guess we have to agree to disagree. To me, a 2 inch screen with very little blur and high visibility is not equal to crap.

When the nice big TV has Grey's Anatomy on it, my DS is the only choice I have.

The GB had some top shooters.

Solar Striker was really good fun, the original Gradius was also top :)

Yeah, I played on an original Gameboy some time ago too, and after wasting hours and hours with this machine in my childhood (it even crashed from running hot), I was shocked how bad the blur was, especially in jump´n´runs. No wonder I have to wear glasses now. I would get pumping headaches from playing on this hardware nowadays.

I believe they will have to rearrange Ketsui if they really port it. Playing Super Star Soldier or R-Type on a handheld works great, but Ketsui, being one of the most manic shooters out there, will definitely have to be toned down for the DS in terms of bullet count - I mean, I am all for a Ketsui on the DS, but I don´t think an exact arcade conversion would be playable. Some dodges in superplays are just insane... And you won´t be able to compare PCB scores with those on the DS anyways, because the hardware differences are just too big.

I have never seen Progear on the PSP as Sven666 mentioned, but I do believe that playing it would be a pain. The bullets are a little bit too tiny for me in that game to begin with. Maybe because I am not one of those who really go that close to the screen like in the arcades - you would have to touch the screen with your nose on the DS to get a similar experience (even tough thouching is good).
THE BULLETS ARE NOW DIAMONDS!

Touche'. Although I went w/ an upscaler and used my monitor in this situation. Ain't so great for my shooting games, but for the other stuff, it was better than not playing.

So whats up with this? Is it a real thing? If so, is there any new news about it?

I got out my DS lite today and remembered how awesome it is.

Others would say that the original DS was better with less fatigue on the hands... ^_~

From reading some of the earlier posts in this thread brings up the fact that one can bring their DS to a special DS downloading site to try out this Ketsui DS game in Japan -- it is a timed game demo, similair to the 2 minute & 5 minute Caravan mini shmup games for the PC Engine/TG-16 platform..... ^_~

I remeber there was a program that would allow you to download the demos of the web and transmit it to your DS. I forgot what it was...

No way dude. I have an original DS and the lite blows it out of the water in every category. Not only is the original DS top heavy, making it somewhat awkward, but the difference in screen quality between the original and lite is so great that there is no contest. Lite is king.

That's how it worked, but it basically self-destructed. If you wanted to try it again, you had to redownload it.

You're missing the point that the Original DS's D-Pad owns the Lite's any day.

Agreed, and GG Aleste 1 and 2 anyone? Those games alone prove to me that hand held systems can get solid shump releases that play well.

Here's hoping that Ketsui does get a DS release; that video looks awesome.
