Heard the new Modest Mouse. It picks up a bit towards the end, but overall the songwriting is dull. So much musical talent; so few musical ideas. I'd prefer Built to Spill's You in Reverse any day of the week.
EDIT: the new Chinese Stars album isn't too bad; better than I expected. Still nowhere near Arab on Radar, I'm afraid.

Finger Eleven - Them vs You vs Me
Pretty good, although pretty distant from the sound of their other material.
Rainbow Butt Monkeys - Letters from Chutney
Rainbow Butt Monkeys is the name of Finger Eleven before they signed on to a label. The music is great. It has more of a funk sort of sound thrown in then their other music.

Beirut - Gulag Orkestar.

Esmerine - If Only a Sweet Surrender...
the Gothic Archies - the Tragic Treasury.
Kate Bush - the Sensual World.
M83 - Before the Dawn Heals Us.
Max Richter - Songs From Before.
Vashti Bunyan - Lookaftering.

The other day i picked up Miles Davis Quintet's 55-56 output on Euporean box set (different to the American one i think) containing:
Miles
Workin'
Cookin'
Relaxin'
Steamin'
Round About Midnight (10 track version)
+ 2 bonus tracks of Miles soloing on some extended (10 mins ish) tracks with some guy i don't know and have forgotten his name.

@ Acid King: I think you're right about Dead Meadow. I think that they have some really great songs, but in the end the albums I've heard, on the whole, strike me as pretty flat/lifeless.
pAper chAse - the first two albums are sooo great
oneida - happy new year
built to spill (passim)
yob - the unreal never lived

This album is win and good. Why can't I be in this band? It's not fucking fairprofessor ganson wrote:Built to Spill's You in Reverse
Apples in Stereo - Velocity of Sound and New Magnetic Wonder - Velocity of Sound was pretty poorly recieved but I like it, I don't share everyone's contempt for powerpop. I like Same Old Drag off NMW but it feels like I've heard it before a million times, very 'archetypal'
Melt Banana - Peel Session - very intense, must listen more.
Explosions in the Sky - Peel Session - can get wankish at times but listen to 'the only moment we were alone' and you'll know why this band is such a success
Six Finger Satellite - Paranormalized - I think I prefer Law of Ruins, just for Race Against Space (fast forward to 1:40 for this song)
Also been listening to the song 'You Are All That I Have' by Snow Patrol, the album overall is kinda over-produced but the songwriting is of good quality

Paranormalized is like a between classic albums odds and ends collection to me, just random songs tossed together. The rocking songs on it rule, like The Greatest Hit and Padded Room. "Coke and Mirrors" is lol. The ending is also cool with headphones. Spotty, luckily only 30 minutes.Neon wrote: Six Finger Satellite - Paranormalized - I think I prefer Law of Ruins, just for Race Against Space (fast forward to 1:40 for this song)
Fast forwarding Race Against Space is messed up.

Oh yeah. I have this one on vinyl, & I love listening to it that way. It sounds so warm. Don't get me wrong, the 24-bit CD remaster is nothing to scoff at, but the original vinyl just sounds so good. The pinnacle of 70's album production.Rob wrote:Steely Dan - Aja
I'm currently digging on a TON of new metalcore bands, as well as a new band called Miseration & their new album "Your Demons, Their Angels". Best melodic death metal album since Carcass' Heartwork, IMO. Arch Enemy's "Black Earth" comes close, as does Sacrificium's "Escaping the Stupor", but this one has them both edged out.

Clutch - From Beale Street to Oblivion - If there is any justice in the world, Clutch will go down in history as one of the greatest rock bands of all time.
All Shall Perish - Hate. Malice. Revenge. - Great, great album. It's a shame all kinds of hardcore kids listen to this and Dying Fetus and all of a sudden think they can write death metal. Last thing we need is another over saturated subgenre
Corrosion of Conformity - Blind - Classic.

What gets me every time I attempt to listen to their stuff is their guitar tone. It just comes across as dull. Might be better live but even then I agree the songs aren't that strong to begin with.professor ganson wrote:@ Acid King: I think you're right about Dead Meadow. Yesterday I unpacked the torrent I downloaded a while ago with lots of Sol Invictus in it.
This band actually exists for 20 years now and I've only discovered them yesterday !!!
Been listening to it ever since and having one mental orgasm after the other.
What a waste of my life the last 20 years
And how I love life right at this moment

All errors are intentional but mistakes could have been made.
Seconded. The "Dan" has always been a guilty pleasure of mine. It's funny because growing up my dad was a huge fan and I couldn't stand them. I guess it's an aquired taste or something. I also would mention Gaucho as one of their better albums too.FRO wrote:Oh yeah. I have this one on vinyl, & I love listening to it that way. It sounds so warm. Currently listening to:
Thee Headcoats - Elementary Headcoats 2xCD singles collection (I managed to just about wear out my vinyl version.)
Jesu - Conqueror
The Archers of Loaf - VS the greatest of all time EP
A legendary boy told me I might like a band called Mastadon. What's the verdict on them?

Leviathan starts out great, but doesn't quite hold up iirc. I agree that Remission is best, but I'm not sure about placing Blood Mountain above Leviathan. Leviathan's best songs are really, really good. Blood Mountain is more consistent, but doesn't have truly stand-out tracks. Anyway, you can't go wrong with any of them, and Remission is classic.Rob wrote: 1. Remission

smashing pumpkins - siamese dream
thee more shallows - more deep cuts
sleep - dopesmoker
flying saucer attack - s/t
om - conference of the birds
and still loving
the pAper chAse - hide the kitchen knives
the pAper chAse - young bodies heal quickly, you know
EDIT: Oh yeah, how could I forget:
built to spill - you in reverse
And you're right, Neon, it's not fair.

Currently listening to a Prestige repressing double LP of Charles Mingus' CM + Max Roach and At The Bohemia. Fantastic.
Also checking out the first couple of disks of Anthony Braxton's 9 Compositions at the Iridion (i think it's called), a 9 CD set featuring 9 record long live performances of his compositions 350-358 from a 4 day stand at the Iridion at New York. Large band and very strange sounds, incredibly free feeling and yet highly structured and paced movement that skips around smaller sections of the group. Braxton is on fire with whatever he plays and everything gels well. Takes a lot of attention though. Also note that this is available on eMusic for 35 downloads, working out at the cost of about £7 for 9 cds of music. The actual release apparently contains a DVD and some great notes but retails at about £80+. Do the maths.
Also been enjoying JSBach's Solo violin stuff as played by Ricci Rigurio (sp?), very moving one take stuff on a good vinyl pressing.
