Vasara: Whats the majority opinion of this game?

Post by PsikyoPshumpPshooterP »

This is gonna be my next PCB purchase since it is relatively cheap and affordable. I tried it on MAME and very satisfied with it. How does the original compare to part 2? how the shmup community feel about Vasara, as a while?
The cave whore count in this thread is unbelievable!!!

BulletMagnet is a fan, I believe. I haven't played anything in the series.

Indeed he is. ;) Both Vasaras are in my personal Top 25, though I'll be the first to admit that they aren't for everyone, since they rely much more on melee attacks than actual shooting, for both scoring and survival. I give the second a slight edge over the first, but I still think both are great: they're similar in a lot of ways, and both are tough but fair, but the scoring technique for each is rather different. It's an enormous shame that neither was ever ported anywhere...at least, as you say, the PCB is relatively cheap.

ALSO me too and stuff. To be blunt, Vasara 1 and 2 are basically any Psikyo game and Giga Wing together having dirty, filthy sex. With next to no actual shooting. And bouncing. Lots of it. I'm pretty sure at least 80% of this forum's users dislike these games for those last two reasons.

I pretty much like both games about the same, really.

I started playing Vasara 1 again recently (and finally cleared it), and I'm now of the opinion that it's better than part 2. Vasara 2's scoring system is just silly, you HAVE to keep doing melee attacks to keep the "combo" alive, which is just a little too much. Vasara 1 is obviously heavy on having to do melee attacks too, but there are still situations where it's advantageous to be doing regular shots instead, and it won't really punish your score.

Vasara 1 is a great game, but I've not played 2 very much. There is a lot of melee attacking (and many hate that in a shooter) so bear that in mind before you shell out cash for it.

To a point I agree on this, but methinks I still have to nitpick a little...you're right insofar as Vasara 2, unlike the first, basically rewards you for how many enemies you can melee to death in a stage (as opposed to a more precise "short burst" system like the first), and also puts a big dent in your score if you lose said "chain." However, it also deserves mention that (afaik) the only ways to lose that chain are to die, or slash an enemy bullet without hitting an enemy ("whiffing" an attack won't affect the chain). Because of this, unlike the first game, you're required to use your slash attack more exclusively offensively, since using it solely for defensive purposes will break your chain. Also, I'd say that the characters' shots are more powerful and effective in the second game, making them more useful to utilize in combination with the melee attack than in the first.

In some ways I do like the first Vasara more than the second, but on the whole I consider it just a bit more polished overall.

BM's comment got me thinking somebody should make a video & put it on YouTube that has Dokken's "Breaking The Chains" song as the music, & show videos of people w/ awesome shmup chains going (like in Ikaruga) that suddenly get broken. That could be the shmup video ever.

Sort of liked it, but I felt Raizing's Brave Blade was more enjoyable.

Heh heh, Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain" might be interesting too. "I can stiiillll hear ya sayin' you would never break the chain..."

I've wanted to try this, but I can never get ZinC to run properly for some reason...I'm probably doing something wrong.

I like 1&2 alot. My music audio on Brave blade is extremely messed up, but it works fine otherwise.

hmmm, don't know about Zinc, but here it runs in Mame with no problems (except for some "looping sounds" that seem to happen in other similar 3d games in mame as well)... one of the reasons I liked it is because it's a bit easier than Vasara 1-2 (and most other Raizing games for that matter). Note: level 1 isn't very exciting, but after that it gets a lot better!

I enjoyed both of them and plan to play both more extensively. Like, how cheap is the PCB? I would probably buy it.

You guys have brave blade working fine in MAME? Mine is all sorts of fucked up if I remember correctly.

For me, Vasara was just the beta for Vasara 2. The second improves on the first in every way, defines the system they clearly had in mind from the start, and is significantly more polished in graphics and audio terms. I really need to get a V2 PCB again, sold my old one a while ago while tight on funds.
