I recently purchased the american Grindstormer for Genesis. I really enjoy the game overall and like the graphic style of it. It's colors are unique and they give it a different flavor that many of the standard saturated colors you usually see in Sega games.
I was just wondering why many people don't like this game? The American cersion includes both games on one cartrage. Then again I was the guy that loves Chaos Field... Poor taste perhaps. The game is like placing your balls on a stump and whacking them with a sledge hammer on the later levels but something keeps drawing me back.
Why is this game considered sub-par?

Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

That's sad....shinsage wrote:Who was that one guy here who bought like a $50 complete V-V only because it was Japanese and then found out Grindstormer showed up when he put it in his Genesis?
That was hilarious.

And that's why you don't order without pictures to see (or doing a little research).Pixel_Outlaw wrote:That's sad....shinsage wrote:Who was that one guy here who bought like a $50 complete V-V only because it was Japanese and then found out Grindstormer showed up when he put it in his Genesis?

I actually prefer the Grindstormer powerup system to the V-V one. That said, I don't play the Genesis port often. It's a good port considering the hardware, but I find it too unfair after the second stage or so. The cramped nature of the display doesn't help matters, either.I It's kind of like the Genesis port of Twin Cobra... still playable, but loses a lot in the translation.

We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.

Just for the record, both the Japanese and the American cart contain BOTH V-V and Grindstormer. You can change it in the options menu.
I think it's a great game, albeit pretty hard. And I much prefer the original V-V (even though including bombs wouldn't have hurt). Grindstormer feels dumbed down - a bit like playing Gradius with auto select on.

Actually both the US and the JPN version of the game include BOTH versions of the game, so you can just switch them in the options menu.
I never heard that the game is underrated, I think it is great. About as close as you can get to a manic shmup on the Megadrive, although the system is a bit too underpowered to really handle the game. Often it will be pushed to the limit and there are slowedowns and sprite flickering. (Just check out the second loop in training mode.) The PCB is the way to go, but the MD version is still great fun though, and hard as hell!
I like the Grindstormer version because of the added bombs.
BTW, this was the last shooter released on Megadrive.
