Twin Galaxies

Post by Kaede »

I was speaking to someone on another forum regarding high scores and I mentioned that many of the top Japanese scores for arcade games eclipse those shown on Twin Galaxies. I also remember DEL mentioning that TG 'ignore' the true top scores set for many STG's by Japanese players. The person I was speaking with said that it's down to Japanese players not being 'bothered' to submit scores which is why they are not recognised saying:
Like it or not, Twin Galaxies are the official World Record recorders and validators.
So can someone clear up these points please?

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't TG scores have to be set whilst one of their adjudicators watches? And if so are there adjudicators in Japan?

Also, I don't see how they can appoint themselves as the 'official' world recorders and validators if they simply ignore Japanese high scores.

Lastly, I am under the impression that shmups.com members in general do not recognise TG as no-one ever talks about them here?

Cheers

From my perspective TG is more aimed towards older games and stuff released in the United States, it doesn't have a Japan Chapter.

If there were such a thing it would probably be going under a different name and probably be financially backed by the likes of Sega or some other game company.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

^Yes I've mentioned these points before.
Answer 1 - Yes Twin Galaxies adjudicators/referees either have to be present or videos have to be submitted for the so-called World Records.
Answer 2 - As far back as I can remember (80s), the Japanese have also sent out referees/witnesses to arcades for World Record attempts.

I respect what Twin Galaxies are doing for the Retro Titles, but of course I'm also very aware that Twin Galaxies conveniently ignore the Japanese (or shall we say Eastern) Arcadia Records.
For Twin Galaxies, the World seems to stop at the borders of North America  .
So in the past, I've played Devil's Advocate and posted Gemant's Arcadia WR listing link on Twin Galaxies forum.
Interestingly, Twin Galaxies senior Referees did not know of the term 'Counter Stop' before I mentioned it with regard to my friend KAC's Counter Stop on Defender II Stargate.

I post on Twin Galaxies for my friend Craig who's been attacking Jr Pac Man in my local arcade for the last couple of years.

Like I said, I do respect Twin Galaxies, but I do wish they would come clean on the 'World Record' issue  . A WR is a WR not a USA WR.

Am I supposed to believe that the World Record on Twin Cobra PCB is 1.9mil (as TG lists) or 10,000,000+ Counter Stop as shown on mog-rep?!

etc...

TG is for kids who want to be seen.. since they practically have no rules whatsoever (ie everything default for instance) you can just change the settings a bit and still be a "top player"

that they concider themselves the world record holders is ridiculous, the only memorable thing they have to boast with is they awakened the spirit of highscore chasing in the early 80s (or maybe even 70s?) in pennyarcades across america...

the real pros can be found on these boards right here or over at sites like speeddemoarchives...

I remember when Walter Day came to the 2002 & 2004 California Extreme shows -- I was going to see if I could set a Klax WR at the 2002 show but no one had a Klax Rom to play on the Ultracade machine...so no go at that show. ^_~

At the 2004 CAX show, Walter Day made another appearance touting submitting WR on classic arcade game titles for the upcoming 2nd edition of the Twin Galaxies Scorebook. Again, no Klax arcade upright to set WR for him to watch/preside over. There's always another time, right? ^_~
