Depends on what you define as good graphics...some think in terms of resolution, others think in terms of eye candy...still others think in terms of how many bullets can fit on screen without any slowdown.

Gonna hafta be more specific than that.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

The prettiest I have played is gradius V, what i can think of now.
And it is awesome in gameplay.

But it is 3d, so it cant really be compared with the sprite-based games, and sprites is much much more fitting and nice in some cases.

Ibara, Mushihime-sama, Espgaluda 2, Ikaruga. Those are tops in my book, in terms of style.

Ikaruga stands out for me, Imagine radiant silvergun remade and looking like that........ Border downs dam impressive aswell but Gradius V probably takes the cake for 3D.

2D sprite wise Battle Garegga imho.

For the newer games, Border Down really does it for me.

For the older stuff, for some reason I have a soft spot for Gun Frontier...maybe it's the art style more than anything, but I really, really love the look of the game. I know it's no graphics powerhouse by any stretch, but I like what I like.

Though Gradius V, Ikaruga and Border Down are probably the most technically impressive games the first game that came to my mind was Zero Gunner 2. Stunning game and way better looking then Under Defeat imho.

Also, mostly because of the style and hand drawn look, I'd say Pro Gear no Arashi has to get a special mention. So much little detail and care has gone into it. :)

I want to like Gun Frontier's graphics I love the theme and the shape of things but the colors seem washed out and lacking some saturation..

In addition to the ones already mentioned, I think Sengoku Blade looks incredible for a 2D game. I just love the art style - the character designs, sprites, backgrounds, colour palette, everything looks superb to me.

I also really like the art style of a lot of the old 2D SNK stuff - especially Last Resort. I think this game is not only really underrated in its gameplay, but also very much overlooked in terms of how good it looks. Right from the title screen where the logo assembles itself you know it's going to be something special. The first level alone has Akira-style cities, an industrial tunnel, and a moon-like cratered surface, all drawn so nicely.

For 3D, I definitely agree that Ikaruga, Gradius V, Under Defeat and Zero Gunner 2 (apart from the boss that climbs out of the ocean - never liked the look of that one) all take the biscuit.

X-Multiply, Gradius Gaiden and Darius Gaiden for me. :)

To be fair, DG is a mixed bag at best, but when it's good, it's really good.

Anything that's a bit quirky tends to do it for me. G-Darius' "ridiculously fucking massive transdimensional battlefish in space" art direction is particularly appealing.

I cant believe nobody mentioned R-Type Final. Aside from the slowdown on many parts.

Most noble graphics: Ikaruga
Most beautiful comic graphics: Sexy Parodius, Harmful Park
Most memorizable "serious" graphical styles: Guwange, ESPGaluda
Best classic graphics: R-Type, Gradius (arcade)
Best 3D/2D-graphics: Under Defeat
Best realization of bg effects: Axelay, Layer Section, Radiant Silvergun
Best "detailed" graphic: Air Gallet

my 2 cents

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Well I wrote "serious" in quotations because I just meant the most memorizable graphics beside cute'em ups (which have the most memorizable textures anyway in my opinion). Guwange's enemy design and background graphics burnt itself into my mind as no other shooter did so far.

I think it would be best to have a 2d catagory and a 3d catigory They are both pretty when done but they are very different.
