A new shmupper

Post by Renzo »

Just wanted to say "hey" to everyone in the forums. I have been a lurker here for quite some time but I just ordered an import Saturn and PS2 last night and am very excited to start playing some shmups. Looking forward to talking with you guys and 1CCing some games.

Good choice. While you are at it you should consider getting a Dreamcast as well. It's a great system for shmups and they are currently dirt-cheap.

Not only that, but apparently shmups will continue to be relased for it even after the ragnarok or the judgment day.

Note: By "they are currently dirt-cheap" I was referring to Dreamcast consoles. There are some pretty expensive Japanese DC shmups like Border Down and Bangaio.

An import DC is next on my list, but I wanted the Saturn for sure and the PS2 is also an excellent system since it opens up the PSX lineup too. But a DC will be in the near future. I really wanted to play Mars Matrix and Bangai-O.

Thanks for the welcome!

Welcome sir.

If you don't object to downloading roms of games you don't own yet you could try out the CPS2 arcade version of Mars Matrix. It's playable on your PC via emulation. Not that I'm encouraging piracy or anything, just a quick try before you buy thing. Also the same deal with Gigawing.

Indeed! Some arcades around these parts would be nice. Closest I got was R-Type about 15-16 years ago. Not good.

Since you are in the US there really is no need to get a Japanese DC; there is a free boot CD that let's you play imports (search the net for an iso). All but the last batch of DCs made can read CD-Rs.

Oh? I'll have to check that out. My next purchase is between Radiant Silvergun and a DC. Any suggestions?

Along with my import Saturn and PS2, I have a couple games coming. I didn't want to spend TOO much but wanted a nice start to the collection. I also already have all the US arcade compilations released thus far, so games like 1942, 1943, Gun.Smoke, etc. are already in the bag. Here's what I got coming:

Darius Gaiden
Mushihime-sama
Raiden Project
DonPachi (PSX)

Personally I would get the DC. I say this for a couple of reasons. One, it has a pretty good library of games, shmups or not. You could nick Ikaruga and a couple others, whichever ones look good. Second, I'm not a huge fan of RS. Granted I have only played the fucked up MAME one, but I take that into account when judging it.

Note: This is coming from a person who had never owned a Dreamcast.

I have played Ikaruga however. Quality stuff.

Either purchase is a good one imo, though you should keep a few things in mind: 1) For what you'd pay for RSG, you could afford both the DC system and a couple of games for it; 2) As was mentioned, playing imports on a DC is easy; 3) The DC's library of shooters is relatively small (and some of them are in the same ballpark as RSG in terms of price), though most consider what's there of pretty good quality overall; 4) Even if you end up not liking RSG, you should still be able to sell it and get most, if not all, of the money you paid for it back.

Welcome, fellow newcomer.

Personally, I'd advise getting RSG for two reasons:

1) It takes a while to truly appreciate all the nuances of the game. The game ages like a fine wine (And the features added to the Saturn version more than justify getting it over going the MAME route, IMO).

and

2)Nothing on the Dreamcast can touch it (though, in all fairness, I haven't played any of the post mortem DC games yet). Bangai-O is awesome but doesn't have as much staying power. And Mars Matrix is just too damn intense for me to take in large doses, personally.

welcome to the forums. i'm pretty new here myself. good place to bullshit.

yeah, get all those great saturn games. I recommend grabbing Battle Garegga and Batsugun. IMO, those are the two best Saturn STGs, sorry RSG fans.

Wow, thanks for the awesome response, guys. I am going to like it here! Dedicated and knowledgable fans. I will keep my eye out for a good copy of RSG since that is what most of you recommended. A good copy should run me...what, 175-200 bucks? At least the resell value will maintain in case I don't like it, like one of you said already. I am sure I will though. Batsugun and DonPachi both look great too, but with RSG taking a large nick in the bank account, they will have to wait. I'll keep you guys posted.

Those are actually some of the best:
Border Down is awesome, Under Defeat is great, and I'm beginning to really enjoy Exelica. And although I don't like it, a lot of people worship Ikaruga. Is Zero Gunner 2 considered post mortem? Cool shooter, too.

So no, I would definitely get a DC instead of RS now, especially since the price of RS is relatively stable while the prices for several DC shooters are on the rise. Especially Border Down is becoming very expensive and a pain to find; better get it now instead of paying even more later. Keep in mind that most DC shmups have a much smaller print-run than RS.

As awesome as Radiant Silvergun is, I'd go for a Dreamcast, and then Mars Matrix, Ikaruga, Under Defeat, Zero Gunner 2, and Triggerheart... Within reason of what you can afford. As for Saturn, I think Dodonpachi competes solidly with RSG for best shooter on the system (hell, any system), and goes for 1/4 the price (or less).

In fact, hasn't Dodonpachi dominated the #1 slot for the "Annual top 25 shmups of all time" thing for all 4 years it's been done? With RSG not even making top 5 most years?

Edit: Ceph is right about print runs. I don't know about the print runs for most of the DC shooters, but Border Down had around 11k copies INCLUDING limited editions. I think Radiant Silvergun had about 50k copies printed, and the price has been in the $120-$180 range for as long as I've been paying attention (the past 2-3 years or so).

Since I live in the US, will I need anything special to plug my JP PS2 and SAT into the outlets here? I know the voltage output is slightly different and that there are converters for such a thing. Any of your guys have problems with JP systems in US outlets?

The voltage is slightly different, but Japanese systems still work via US outlets.

Get a DC already, man! :D I could pick one up right now in a second hand video game shop for 25 bucks. I know you could do the same since you live in the US, they should be plentiful in used game shops.. probably not chains like Gamestop but the independent ones. Luckily I already have one and play shmups on it all the time.
