Fantasy Zone II DX (Sega Ages, JP PS2)
Fantasy Zone II DX (Sega Ages, JP PS2)
Just announced, a sequel to Fantasy Zone. I think this was released in the arcades and the SMS. Anything else?

Taking a look at phantasy star on there disapoints me, it's just a collection of them all from the MD. I bought both the enhanced versions on the PS2 and was looking forward to the remake of 4.... oh well.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

You must be talking about fz2 because fz1 is one the most ported sega games. I thought arcade fz2 was the same as the master syatem version, like the twinkle tale PCB?GaijinPunch wrote:None -- and the PCB is apparently extremely rare.Atomic wrote:does anyone know of any compilations that include the arcade versions of the fantasy zone games?

Yeah, but the various ported versions are all noticably different from one another, aren't they? I'm not aware that any are untainted ports of the arcade original.chtimi-CLA wrote:You must be talking about fz2 because fz1 is one the most ported sega games.GaijinPunch wrote:None -- and the PCB is apparently extremely rare.Atomic wrote:does anyone know of any compilations that include the arcade versions of the fantasy zone games?

You know, I'm yet to play the Phantasy Star II remake. From what I've seen I know it's good. Should give it a look after I finish Tales of Rebirth. I too wouldn't mind a PSIV remake, though I wish it would get a world wide release.Strider77 wrote:Taking a look at phantasy star on there disapoints me, it's just a collection of them all from the MD. I'm glad to see the games back in circulation, it's just I have them on the saturn all ready and a few of the genesis versions. I really liked what they did with the enhanced ones on PS2 and 4 is one of the best if not the best.I too wouldn't mind a PSIV remake, though I wish it would get a world wide release.
I appreciate sega taking over and putting faithful versions on the collections now, but I hope they don't get lazy. I'd like enhanced versions AND a perfect port.

It's not bad, but not great. Suffers from the same problem as the first remake -- too much leveling. (The first remake is also painfully linear, whereas the original was not. I give it a C).You know, I'm yet to play the Phantasy Star II remake. From what I've seen I know it's good.
Yes, but we're talking about perfect arcade ports. Just thinking now, what about the Sega Saturn Sega Ages version? Perfect port? You must be talking about fz2 because fz1 is one the most ported sega games.
As for which is the rare PCB, it must be Fantasy Zone II (or Fanatsy Zone 2). System 16 has them both listed, but no pics or other relevant information on either.

There's a UK edition of Super Fantasy Zone that goes for pretty cheap. AFAIK there's no difference, and it runs fine on my US Genesis.Limbrooke wrote:It's a real shame Mega Tech wasn't mistakenly compatible wit MegaDrive/Genesis, many of those carts are pretty cheap from what I've seen.
Humans, think about what you have done
Is there really such a thing as a "perfect port"? Something tells me that no matter how minor, some aspect would always get overlooked (a missed bug, a pixel out of place, a touch of slowdown, questionable resolution, a sound effect that's not quite right, screen dimensions that aren't quite right, etc.). I can't help but feel that if you nit pick a port close enough, you'll find something that's not exactly as it was in the arcade.GaijinPunch wrote:Yes, but we're talking about perfect arcade ports. But regarding Fantasy Zone on the Saturn, it's a very, very faithful port. The music, graphics, sound... it all seems nearly spot on. Plus, the more you play, you unlock little special things in the options menu.
There is a System-16 arcade Fantasy Zone II - ported only to 8-Bit systems.
If anybody is confused about the Fantasy Zone series and what games and ports exist, check this out for a brief refresher:

IMO, the only Fantasy Zone anybody needs is Super Fantasy Zone on Megadrive. It's way better than any of the arcade games!

More like completing the series as this appears to be the last release(for PS2 anyway). It's been pretty ardious to get to the release date release too and even now it's still many months off from being on sale. September for christs-sake, September?!GaijinPunch wrote:I'm glad to see they're continuing w/ the Sega Ages releases...especially of painfully difficult to find PCBs (like Fantasy Zone II).

There's a nice thread about it here: http://www.smspower.org/forums/viewtopi ... f36c532cfe
I bet this collection will feature all those special resolutions, 240p and 480p
I had the Saturn version, but I don't like fz at all. It has super plays on it and lots of (secret) options as well.
I too love that Sega is continueing the Sega Ages, but this should have been the Shinobi/Shadow dancer compilation, damnit
I don't even consider fz a shmup, it's more like a platform game with the main character having a jet pack or something. If there is ever news of another Sega Ages Collection, please create a thread for it. But this is coming in September I think so it will be a while before the next collection appears.

Did you play SFZ? I don't think it's a bad game... nothing to rave about. Not as good as Space Harrier, but yeah, it would be nice to see it finally get a release.
