That was a joke. There was recently an IGN article on shoot 'em ups and they misspelled it with a "c".

Shoot the Core is indeed the website to visit. But if it's names you want check out the Shikigami No Shiro series and Raiden III which are both pretty recent commercial releases. Both a lot of fun too. Kenta Cho's (aba) games are also recommended. I would be happy to hear about any other finds of extreme coolness.

I can recomend the Touhou games easily. They're available on eBay for about $20 a pop, and are well worth investing in. Plus even if your PC's too shit for shiki, it should have no problem running these.

Hey, I kinda like "shump." Saying "shmup" makes me feel a bit too Jewish.

This link...

...should do a decent job of aquainting (did I spell that right?) you with some of the key games and terminology related to Doujin (read: free) shumps. The guy's choices might not all be my cup of tea personally, but it's a nice introduction nevertheless, and there's some nice links provided at the bottom (including shoot the core).

Be sure not to overlook rRootage, especially if you'll just be playing with a keyboard. It's old as hell, and fairly simple, but the game is pure digital crack (and one of the few games my PC can handle well  ).

I can't get my 'pooter to manage it at a reasonable frame-rate at all... Sure, it can run DoDonpachi at full speed, but it seems to hate Kenta Cho with a passion :p Any tips for optimising it's performance without resorting to low res (ugh) mode?

RRootage work to slow?
Are you try this tips -

These options are available:
-lowres Use the low resolution mode.
-nosound Stop the sound.
-window Launch the game in the window, not use the full-screen.
-reverse Reverse the laser key and the bomb key.

I would highly recommend Tyrian 2000 - it's been released as freeware & is an excellent shmup w/ both story & arcade modes. There's a fan site here:

http://members.iinet.net.au/~vannevar/tyrian/

If you're running on a newer PC or on XP you'll probably need DosBox to run it:

Enjoy!

I'm glad you answered cause I'm terrible with technical issues.
Personally I'd hate to play the game without the music, which I'm quite fond of, but I wouldn't think that playing in low res would hamper your enjoyment too much. It might actually give it kind of an interesting look. It's not a really hyper detailed game (graphically) in the first place, so as long as you can see the hit boxes, you're not missing much.

Actually it is simple copy/paste from readme
And I shall agree that reduction of the sanction only gives to game of charm of old school of %)))
But, seems to me, the problem not in weakness of a computer... Similar that somewhere in system there are problems.
At game not such and high requirements.
