Saturn Shmups

Post by HeWhoGoverns »

I recently purchased a Saturn with the capability to play import games. The main reason I bought it is to play the legendary Radiant Silvergun, which I have also recently purchased. I also plan to buy Gradius Deluxe Pack and Salamander Deluxe Pack, and possibly Thunder Force V, even though I already own it for the PS1 (I love Thunder Force that much).

But on to the point of this topic. Now that I have a Saturn, what shmups should I get? Recommend me some good ones, please. :D

Since you love Thunder Force:
Thunder Force Gold Pack 1 and 2
Blast Wind
Hyper Duel

All are excellent titles made by Tecno Soft. Though most bitch because Blast Wind is easy. *shrugs*

You got Radiant Silvergun, so thats good. Raizing's big offerings on the Saturn are Soukyuugurentai and Battle Garegga. Since you're getting the Konami Deluxe packs don't leave out Gokujyo Parodius Da! Deluxe Pack, as it is quite awesome! Galactic Attack aka Rayforce aka Layer Section will be pretty easy/cheap to find, so definitely get that. Same goes for Darius Gaiden. Metal Black is another good one, as is Gun Frontier, but they're both also on some collection thing.

Uh... and just follow the link in my sig for more recommendations. 8)

Edit: Oh, Game Tengoku is one of the funniest/best shmups you'll ever play. Get it! You won't be sorry.

Edit 2: Batsugun is also a MUST.

You have to get Planet Joker. Its a must!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, disregard that last comment. Planet Joker is supposed to be equivalent to somebodies ass pipe after eating taco bell.

I havnt actually played Planet Joker but I've heard through the grapevine its mediocre at best.

Get Metal Black, Layer Section, Cotton 2, Battle Garegga. They dont disappoint.

I've 1CC'd Planet Joker...

I'm currently working on a review for Planet Joker...

Trust me... calling it mediocre is like calling Skull Fang the greatest game ever made.

Get it. TFV on the Saturn is visually superior to the PS1 version (shocking I know, but it's true to a good many people). Plus, if you get the special edition, you get a nice music CD.

I have to second Darius Gaiden. It's an absolute joy to play, has awesome visuals, and boasts a fantastic experimental-yet-appropriate soundtrack. You can get it for the price of a couple of pints, making it one of the least expensive "AAA" shmups in existence. :D

Sexy Parodius
Battle Garegga
Dodonpachi
Soukyugerentai
Layer Section
The Game Paradise
Batsugun
Blast Wind

There are others, can't think of them right now.

I think its more like he sucks at Radiant Silvergun. The game doesnt suck its just freakin hard and takes lots of practice to master.

Yeah, Hyper Duel is really cool and underrated. It's a shame it goes for such an outrageous price on eBay.

I guess that's true too, doesn't change the fact that RSG sucks.

Yeah, RS is a LOT harder than Ikaruga, and I can definitely see people not having the patience to master RS not liking it. Whereas Ikaruga was just too goddamn easy.

I never knew RSG was considered particularly difficult. Most of the Gradius games are 10x harder for me than RSG. I mean, if you're just starting a new game on Saturn mode that would be insanely tough to get through. But with level 30 or so weapons, and a nice buildup of credits, I would think that most shmuppers could handle it with relative ease (seeing as how I'm none too good at the genre in general, and I can do it). But then again, it's probably the shmup I've played the most over the years.

Ah... when I speak of difficulty of shmups I'm speaking in terms of one credit and no tinkering with options.

To 1CC RS from the ground up with all defaults... yeah, even if you take route 2 its a challenge.

I didnt even know there were different routes in RSG. Although I have only started playing it for the first time last weekend.

You never get to choose your path in the Saturn mode, so you must be talking about the Arcade version then. And, if so, you're quite right; it's hard as nails without feeding a few virual coins into the thing.

As for the Saturn mode, I doubt it would even be possible if you were just starting a fresh game. It isn't really even intended to be beaten on your first go; some of the bosses near the end would take friggin ages to go down with low level weapons.

Edit for Sideshow: the only choice of path you get is whether you'd rather play level 2 or 4 in the arcade mode (after beating level 1). The game is shorter in general if you play in this mode as well, as many of the bosses later in the game were added for the Saturn mode.

It has been done: IIRC a (former?) forumgoer named Ben Shinobi has done it. It;s way beyond my personal skill level, but it can be done. I'm sure there's a replay or two out there someplace...

Damn, that must've taken hours! 'Course, I guess, most (if not all) of the bosses will self destruct after a while, huh? But still, it takes me a solid hour and a half to get through the game, powered up to the point where a lot of the bosses take just a matter of seconds. And that's not even going for the 100% destruction bonuses on most of 'em. Dude must've had the concentration of a fucking praying mantis!

Damn, I just watched a video to see what you were talking about. If I didn't already know what the concept of the Psyvariar was I would have said "Interesting, a shmup where you have to see how many bullets you can be hit by."
