Eh you know me C, I didn't want to pay out the arse. It does taste like shit, unless mixed with cream soda (!) I'll do some experimenting definitely especially since the liquor store is half a block away from me when I'm at school (state owned here in VA too, FWIW).

I had a White Russian at a restaurant the other night. It was delicious. But that's just, like, my opinion, man.

Careful man there's a beverage here!!! :P

Jim Beam is OK--I've had a helluva lot worse (cut my teeth on Old Crow!) Have you tried their black label or rye whiskey? (both worth the extra bucks I think)

As long as you aren't buying gutter bourbon, its all pretty interesting. I was drinking some kind of bourbon called bulleit. Hard as shit, but really tasty. The higher price tag doesn't always equal smoother, sometimes it just means tastier. Also, some bourbons are better for mixing, while others (like makers) are better straight up.

I've still never aquired a taste for scotch but Irish whiskeys are pretty nice. Ahh, nothing will chase me away from beer, but a nice bourbon on the rocks hits the spot now and then.

But doesn't that equal cheaper?

No, it's actually more expensive which might also have to do with our liquor taxes. The only good thing about our liquor laws is that bars can only sell six packs and beer distributors are only allowed to sell cases, which means instead of having a shitty selection of six packs and cases in our grocery stores and convenience stores (which aren't allowed to sell liquor or beer) we basically have warehouses filled with cases. In my circumstance, I have one of, if not the biggest, beer distributors in the country within 20 minutes of my house.

I've never had the Jim Beam rye. I've seen that around so I'll have to give it a shot (zing!) one of these days.

Very favorite drink has to be really good scotch, but spending $50+ on a bottle is hard to justify, especially when I can buy excellent gin for much cheaper. Tomorrow night I'm definitely having a martini.

"Monopoly" is synonymous with "cheaper"? My MBA is worth even less than I thought...

Before you guys start flogging me, up in New Hampshire, the state liquor stores ARE cheaper than you'd expect. There are probably a whole series of reasons for this (one of which includes the lack of taxation of booze there). Truth is the grocery stores have cheap booze too, but the state run places do indeed have some great deals.

So you'll have to excuse my ignorance on this matter. I think every state is a little different in how they handle all this stuff. Personally I wish they'd just drop all the laws on this and get beer right back into the gas stations where it belongs!

I haven't drunk tons of beer, but European beers do not have more alcohol than domestic ones (just one of many myths out there). I had a Heineken in Germany; sometime I should have one locally so I can say how they stack up.

Also worth mentioning that the so-called German Purity Law is a load of old bollocks, rubbed out a bunch of interesting types of German beer.

Still, out of what's left there's quite a bit of good beer to be had. My personal favorite would be one of Weltenburger Kloster's beers (again, not that I've had too many to compare them with, but they have some amazing ones). Will probably import some eventually.

Also, I just love abusing the Budweiser name, such as "Budunwiser" or "Budwater" (and another I can't think of at the moment)...-unwiser is definitely my most used name. Bloodreign and I contributed a bit to the Gorillarape Wiki's article on beers, alas, it's down at the moment...

My dad gets me liquor whenever he goes up travels up there because it's significantly cheaper than it is in PA. As far as gas stations for beer? Fuck that! I'll take the Beer Yard and Shangy's thank you very much!

Yeah, I remember reading that wheat beer wasn't legally allowed to be brewed in Germany til a few years ago. My personal favorite German beer is Celebrator doublebock. Gooooood stuff.

Whatever wheat beer I had wasn't that special, I thought. The tragedy was that all the special flavored beers were exterminated - a favorite link of mine, which it seems some crusading retard culled from the links page at the bottom of the Wikipedia article references. Oh well. Will have to see if somebody had a legitimate reason to pull it, but it seems like an excellent article to me.

I really wish I'd had a camera with me to take a picture of Arrogant bastard beers stocked at a gas station. Completely blew my mind!

Thought I'd add: I picked up Jameson's 12 year irish whiskey. Very fucking nice and smooth. I think I'm turning into some sort of refined drinker, going more for small expensive bottles of whiskey and cognag instead buying based on punch per $. I'm starting a cute little shelf with cute little liquors none of which cost less than $30 a bottle. Yeah!

Yeah me too with Vodka. I've got about 30 different kinds of bottle all arranged for display. Not all are top shelf exactly, but most of em are in the $20-40 range.

Only problem is that it's become quite difficult for me to remember which ones were good or bad.

Here in Ohio, state liquor stores are the only places you can buy real liquor. They sell some liquor at grocery stores, but it's watered down (42 proof max).

I just saw the words "monopoly" and "cheaper" used together and felt the need to comment, booze or otherwise. :)

My work colleague Mark and myself enjoy a pint of Erdinger after a hard day's work:

Erdinger is a wheat beer, and is very nice indeed - I definitely recommend trying it if you see it anywhere.

Best beers I've ever had-- and I've had lots-- have been in English pubs. I've only been to the UK twice for short periods. The most memorable part was probably the pubs with their tasty beer and soccer games on the telee.

Icarus, Rando, and seth back in the same day! Yay. Someone write Pa.

Been drinking white russians everywhere just to see the difference in taste from place to place. It's pretty expensive to drink out, isn't it? I'd rather just invite friends over and get it from the grocery store or something.

You just have to find the places with decent deals, but yeah, for the most part it's not worth it. I rarely go out drinking and when I do it's almost always to one one particular bar because on tuesday or thursday they've got 35 cent wings and import drafts are only 2.50 from 5-7.

Damn straight. I'm forever being totally fleeced for this at rubbish metal gigs, though. The venues always sell bottles at 3 quid a throw!

What? I'm quite sure that british ale is supposed to be consumed at room temperature! And that seems preferable for that style of ale.

Nah, all depends on what kind it is. Loads of variety among Albion's ales, captain! Broon has "serve cold" on the labels. :P
