A few weeks old, but might still be of interest to some who haven't seen it...
"Diggnation", the popular internet TV show hosted by web 2.0 site Digg.com, has featured a shmup superplay video on their February 22 show, under the headline Hardest. Video Game Boss. Ever!
If you ever wanted to see an average non-shmupping person's reaction to a Mushihimesama japanese superplay, here you go...
Don't bother, the flash video file is 84MB, and all you get are comments like "What's the name of that game? Mush... Super Ultra?" "That's what stupid people play for fun" and "No one ever finished this with less than 10 credits".
Oh come on, I had a good laugh watching these guys' reactions to the game. I actually think this is probably a pretty standard response you'd get from a person who's never played shooters whose first exposure was this game.
Seriously, there are plenty of people who think all games look the same; is it that unreasonable that a person would think a traditional genre like shooters would look awfully similar to one another?

I think they're right though. More work than fun.
Actually, when I first showed DDP Daioujou to a non-shmupping (but long time video gamer) friend of mine, he started laughing when the whole screen filled with bullets
Bullet hell games tend to give laymen sensory overload.
funny you mention that, i showed the daioujou arika replay to my old work colleague who mainly plays neo geo stuff. anyways, i showed the hibachi bit, and he goes: "oh, so it's like ikaruga....?" (he thought the player was absorbing bullets!)
Meh, it's a reasonable reaction. After all this is why people play danmaku. Because it's the hardest genre out there. I remember at the Game on exibit in London, I stood as far away from from the screen as possible so everyone could see me playing Warning Forever. I had quite a posse watching me. And me and my girlfriend had an even bigger gang watching us when we were doing an awesome Gradius V two player run. The point is there's a flashy, showman like aspect to manics, and if idiots on some stupid blog site cant fathom the skill needed to play it, it's only human

It's mainly because the crowd doesn't know that the hitboxes are like 1 pixels and not the whole ship/character/bullet. Green Beret, Transformers, etc. on the Commodore 64 are still harder than DDP: DOJ...
Before Pope John Paul died he decreed that Aliens were also GOD's creatures and we should treat them with respect.

Signed. I hate it when people say 8 and 16 bit shmups are 'easy'. For me they're really fucking hard, to the point of frustration, something I experience very rarely in manics. Modern shmups are very easy by comparasion. Try comparing Gradius III and V!

They always have a difficult level 3 or 4..
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Depends on the game. I've popped in a couple of Caravan games recently, and 1CC'ed them by the end of the day. I owned the ESPGaluda II PCB and it took me 3 weeks.

Some PC Engine shmups are actually pretty easy. I managed to almost 1cc a game in one try. EspGaluda II? I can't get past the third stage without dying.
Yaul: An awesome open source SEGA Saturn software development kit
The guy on the right, use to work on what is now G4tech TV i'm pretty sure?? He use to be a host on Attack of the Show, but i'm not sure if it was attack of the show that early on?? i think so..

Those two meatballs suck ass. Ignorance is truly bliss (meaning that being not so up to date is in, and the people that watch the clip has about as much knowledge as they do regarding their topics). Which i quess is either profitable or what everyone wants to see or both. Sorry just being an MB.
MB= miserable bastard
Update- I'm not so bad now, lol

I think everyone has there strengths and weaknesses. I can 1cc to level 5 of esp ra.de, but i've never manged to get to level 3 of Salamander without the Konami code. Yup.
