ORIGINAL POST:
Uhm, first of all I hope this thread is ok with the mods/admin, lock it with no mercy if otherwise!

Anyway, on Arcade Extreme (the italian reference about the arcade gaming) we're thinking about a Guwange contest, but we need players. Less then 10 makes a tournament quite useless, you know. Anyway, the goal of the tournament will be reach the highest possible score in the west in two months, but not only. We'll have top tiers and low tiers from the beginning (ie if you're a beginner you'll be a low tier, if you are a well known player or have experience on the game, you'll be a top tier). Both low and top tiers will compete for the top prize (100 euro, courtesy of Nev), low tiers will compete for the secondary prize (20 euro, courtesy of LUN), so everyone will have a goal to reach.
We'll have the rules ready in a few days, they won't be discussed in public to avoid confusion & drama. You can accept the rules or not, it's your choice ;)

But basically there will be something like 3 checkpoints (3 pre-selected days) to post your stuff. During a checkpoint you must show an .inp (wolfmame, we'll prepare the right version "ready to use") or a video of your run (just in case you play with PCB). Before or after a checkpoint you can post whatever you want, even nothing.

This is the thread in which we're discussing (italian only, at the moment):
http://arcade-extreme.forumfree.net/?t=15113310
a new thread will be opened for the beginning of the contest.

Any interest? We need to know if someone is interested in order to know if we should actually start this thing or not ;)

Perfect! :D
If you prefer you can record your mame runs via some capture software without create an .inp everytime, like you did in the past IIRC. We're discussing this kind of things but we definitely want more freedom this time!

Two months is a decent amount of time to get some good results out of any game, let alone Guwange. Although Guwange is a very demanding game, a lot more than the other games in STGT '06. I think some good scores will come out of both tiers depending on who's playing in this tournament, so I'm looking forward to seeing what people can do this time.

Suppose I better get practicing. ^_-
Hmmm... stick or pad...

I'd like to join in on this one, but for one slight problem - I would be playing on PCB but have no way of recording my games via video camera. LUN, are you saying the inp files don't have to be from my best scoring run at the end of the contest? If so I suppose I could play on my PCB and then just record runs on mame when needed.

No, actually I meant that you have to show your efforts only during certain "checkpoints". Only the stuff posted during certain days will count for the final chart! But you have to post video proofs anyway. That's extremely good for the competition too... ^_^

Anyway, if you play on a supergun you can record your runs using a normal DVD recorder, but I know, it's quite expensive...
Anyway, it will be great to have you in too. Let us know your decision ;)

About stick vs. pad: STICK!

The rules will be ready within a few days ;)

Be careful which version of wolfmame you use for the contest. The newer versions of mame do not playback cave games properly. The last version that works properly that I know of is wolfmame 99.

I'll enter, but I'll be busy most of the way through the contest with work I think.

I'm sure I could throw a couple of half arsed inputs at this in 2 months though :D

Welcome aboard Freddie :D
You're in a top level team, I'm tempted to put you in Top Tiers. But tell me if you prefer to compete with LT, no worries about that!

Rob: I know what you mean. In fact I won't play too, more or less for the same reason. Anyway if you change your mind about this you're welcome!

Lun, I probably won't get too far over my best of 9 million over the competition with the amount of time I'll have.

If everyone is going to be dropping 20mil+ sign me up for lower league glory!

EDIT: AND there is a possibilty I could win money!!!

9 millions means experience on the game. In the low tier list we have people with no experience with the game or with shmups at all! Uhm...
If you take it right, as a compliment to you as a player, I should put you in top tiers. Seems reasonable! But anyway, LT for you. Just keep in mind that if you want to change (just for the satisfation of being in the TTs) you only need to say it before the beginning!

Oh, I didn't realise that a lot of players hadn't played much.

If the guys in the lower tier haven't much experience I'll prop up the top league lun - it's not very fair on other people.

Thanks for this Freddie, most of the players are quite new to shmups at all, not only Guwange :)

Anyway, you still can try to win the award for "the most improved player"... There will be something like that. More details later (or tomorrow)!

it's a real cool idea you've got there. i wish i had the time to participate! though sucking at it tremendously it's my favorite Cave game. just have too many new shooters to play. :?

just out of technical curiosity: does this not cause lag?

wolf99 is best choice.

PS. Why I'm in TOP tier?

It may cause lag, yes. Not with my setup, for example, but Neverland has experienced the problem. You can solve it doubling the signal. This way you can send the signal to TV and DVD Rec at the same time instead of doing Console/PCB --> DVD Rec --> TV. It works! And think about the contest :)

Des: is wolf90 fine enough?
Yes you're TT... Guess why :D

wolf90 is good version too. But 99 will be best, why? Because GEMANT give prizes for Guwange too (90mln ;)) and for his contest we must use wolf99-106.
