Providence has more than Load records. Load is just one aspect that is better known than others--but even Ben's output beyond Lightning Bolt, White Mice and a few others is still relatively obscure.

My perspective on this is warped because my idea of the providence scene isn't about albums that are available but what is actually happening. Between AS220 and many small art galleries/warehouse shows, there is a LOT going on. The culture in providence is very simply supportive of the arts in about all forms--and there's plenty of dialogue between artists, and many getting out on international tour and bringing that experience back to enrich the local scene.

Basically it is a hotspot of artistic R&D with almost every idea you can imagine being explored; and unlike in other places I have lived, this is all out in the open with public support (well, more or less...)

Now outside of Providence maybe all you see is Load Records (and again, only some very select titles on Load), but it does miss what is going on here (even having released a lot of Providence artists, my own output misses what is going on too!)

And is far as wtf is up with Providence, Rob is wrong, the answer is H.P. Lovecraft. He is still looking after all of us

I think this is what professor ganson is talking about, though. I don't like Load much when there's Skin Graft around.

Just watched the Lightning Bolt video. That was good. I think LB would be a lot more listenable on record without the vocals. The freakiest show was in Providence, with that bearded guy flopping around ("crowd surfing" in a box, I guess). :)

Speaking of which:

yowie - cryptooology

Sadly, I am not allowed to play this one in the house (except on my MP3 player). Too "restless."

My world is being turned inside out!!! I used to say:

Leaves is Unwound's best album (and so my favorite album period).

But now the middle albums like Repetition and New Plastic Ideas are blowing my mind.

I used to say:

Laws of Ruin is Six Finger Satellite's best album.

But now Severe Exposure is blowing my mind. (In the past I had a copy that had the song order scrambled, and this seriously screwed up the experience!)

Also listening to:

old time relijun - witchcraft rebellion

Not sure what to think about this one. :?

I flip-flop on those two SFS albums from time to time. Severe Exposure is just focused on noisy rock, love the running time of 35 minutes. The first two tracks are possibly my favorite opening songs to any album. On the other hand Law of Ruins is the hour+ epic with slicker production, more variety but still has some raw rock songs. The space age packaging on Ruins completes it, too. Law of Ruins usually wins. I wish more bands would mix drone/electronics with rock like that.

Leaves Turn Inside You is always my favorite Unwound album, even though I occasionally envision it being trimmed to 50 minutes/one disc. A few in the middle of disc 1 could probably go missing with minimal tears shed, first track on the second disc never really liked. I also wish there was more drone in there! I'd go with the two preceding albums after that. CFACS is always underrated.

Hahaha, Magma brings back memories. I don't know if I can take them seriously, but they can be great sometimes!

Zeit...now that's an album!

I can't think of a single unqualifiedly negative thing to say about Leaves. Yes, the recording of the drums is a bit weak, and, well, the whole thing is a bit psychedelic and moody. But that's all fine, and there's really no song that I dislike (even One Lick Less is tops imo). Here's my problem. Because the whole thing is a bit moody, I can't listen to it without getting a bit sad-- mostly because I know they will never make another album. It's hard to see a good thing come to an end. It would be one thing for a band that's so abrasive and high-energy to go out kicking and screaming. It's quite another to become so pensive and meditative, and then fade into oblivion. It was easier to enjoy Leaves before I fully understood its place in Unwound's corpus. With all that said, it's still my favorite album of all time-- even if it makes me a bit sad.

Manfred Schoof - European Echoes -- that's some quality noise.
John Coltrane - Interstellar Space -- I saw people describing this as "spare." No. Crazy drumming.
Rashied Ali w/ Frank Lowe - Duo Exchange -- same drummer as ^
Don Cherry - Eternal Rhythm -- love the bells and vibes combo.

El hombre de montana

Have absolutely no clue if this is a 'good' album by them or not.

The new Blackfield record simply titled Blackfield II is fantastic. Steve Wilson is on fire the last few years with Porcupine Tree and Blackfield. Plus, his work with Opeth has just changed that band for the better immensely.

Wtf!?! A remarkable find. Album of the year so far? Yeah, I know it's only March, but this is hard to beat.

Also loving:

Dead Meadow - s/t (quite possibly best stoner rock I've heard)

I have no idea why so many people rave about these guys. I've tried listening to the album of theirs that I have prolly more than a dozen times and everytime it came off as incredibly bland and boring. I'll have to give them another shot sometime.
Feedback will set you free.
