Robotix (2D space shooter)

Post by Teasy »

Hi there!
Teasy here.. Creating (freeware) games for (anyone's) pleasure.

Robotix is actually my first attempt to create a simple game, focussing on just that, rather than being complicated and time consuming :) (Like all those never-ending projects)
I have found that keeping something rediculously simple only takes a little bit of energy and gives a lot of enjoyment in return, so I'm very curious if there are other people out there who feel the same when playing this game.

In brief, Robotix is a 2D (sideview) multi-directional/platform space (robot) shooter which has a number of vehicles, controlled by keyboard, and a number of weapons, controlled by mouse.
There's a variety of missions (with storyline!), primarily focussing on blasting anything that can be blasted Image A lot of enemies, structures and bases to destroy. And a lot of goodies to pick up along the way.
All sounds, music and graphics are homemade, if that says anything :) (code & storyline too!)
A lot of special effects are also included for your mouse button's worth Image

Here are some snapshots to give an impression of what it looks like (if that says anything Image):

Let me know if you have as much fun playing this game as I have Image

Oh, a list of available controls is displayed when starting the game :)

I tried playing it but it's super slow on my comp. No suprise since the only comp I have is 499 mgz.

The bottleneck is the videocard I think. I've tested it on a P3-600 MHz with a Viper V330 (4Mb!) and it runs very smoothly 99% of the time.
Maybe the 'slowness' is actually your interpretation of the normal speed :D
See, this game has a very gradual increase in speed and difficulty. Most of the time you can decide yourself how far you want to go inside the lion's mouth Image (=less time to blow everything up). Proceed with caution! Image

BTW; the 'slowness' is intended for a sense of realism, e.g. no robots running around in turbo-mode Image, while still being easy to play. In fact, I made some later parts easier because these were too hard for some people :)

I tried it on my system (1583MHz) and I agree that the pace is fairly slow, compared to Sub Terrania for instance

hello,
just wanted to say I appreciate your game a lot !
it has a very nice atmosphere/feeling,
a little like doukutsu monogatari maybe ( cave story ).
More impressions as I play through it;
but really it's already fairly polished ! ;)

what language did you use to develop it?

Are you really sure it's your comp and not just the game?

Did you get to level 5 or 6 -- and if so, are those slow as well? Image

Thanks, man! :)
I'm curious what you'll think after level 6! Image

For this game I used a language called Blitz3D, which is a powerful Basic variant.

Thanks for trying it out, guys Image

More players are very welcome! Image

Update: New levels, features, sounds and tracks are still being added. I'll upload the new version on monday :)

This is a fun game :)
I am in level 6 now.
These chain explosions are great!
Your graphics could need more color and they look a bit blurry and filtered.
And did you use 2 seperate tile layers for drawing and collisions?

For those of you who think the game is too slow, I've added Fast and Turbo modes - Press F4 to change it! Image

Lots of other improvements and additions as well, like additional levels, sounds, music, new special graphics tricks to make the game run faster on slower machines as well, explosive rockets, twin cannon, controllable rockets, optional fullscreen/windowed mode, etc Image

Whoa, level 6! Image
Many more explosions (i.e. bigger things to blow up) in later levels :)

You mean the tile graphics? In general? Or a specific set?
I've used only a single tile layer (for speed), but each tile has individual properties to create the illusion of multiple layers as well as having individual collision info Image

Thank you for trying the game! Image

Oh btw, the blurry gfx could also be the windowed mode stretching the graphics -- maybe you mean that. Fullscreen mode is the default now, which shows pixels more clearly, if you like that Image

Thanks a lot, guys! Image

I've uploaded another new version (direct link) which fixes a timing problem when changing a lot between Normal, Fast and Turbo modes.

This game is very enjoyable. I have only beaten the first four levels, but I didn't have time to complete the fifth.

I see influences from Lander, asteroids, and other vector based shooters. The mouse control is excellent (not too easy and not too difficult)! Makes you enjoy blowing stuff up.
