Specifications: Crank up the difficulty to "hard".

Tip: If you manage to beat the last boss, pause the game and record your score because after the credits roll your score isn't shown.
Never heard of this one! Do you know anything about rom availabilty? Just to make clear, I'm not asking for the rom - I only want to know if it's easily available.

The cartridge itself is pretty common it also had a release in US and Europe. Therefore finding the rom shouldn't be difficult, look for "Pocky & Rocky".

Wow, the precedessor of Guwange! Only without scrolling .... and those things you shoot with ... and the general setting ...

I hope level 1 is the only level where I have to spend the time you get for each level like this to get a decent score:
Image
but I think there are endless enemy spawns in each level I hope you guys are just not skilled enough in this game to stay there and fight them till you just have enough time left to fight the boss (which I tried in level 2 and miserably failed) otherwise this challenge will get bloody hard.

Kiki Kaikai! This is cool. Yokai monsters. Relaxing after the huge hitbox and fast enemies of TFIV. Let's just not milk the spawn points, OK? Pretty please with sugar on top?

yeah... so like, can I have your score for Week 1?

I think milking enemies is part of the score system, there's a time limit anyway...

It'd be higher, but you only start with 1 extra life on hard... >_>

And about me disappearing for a year... I dunno if it'll happen or not, lol.

Might try to counter stop this thing if it's possible, fweeee...

Ok, I have thought about it and I think I'll skip this game week in favor for everyone else. Because, if I'd join I'd try to find the best spots to milk each stage and that would ruin the fun for everyone else.

But simply playing and trying to ignore the possibility to milk enemies is ruining the fun for me. As "don't milk" is not a solid rule as something like a banned character. It's a vaguely defined idea and for me a tournament loses it's fun when I can't try to maximize my result. I like playing with a little ambition which I completely lose when I have to be careful to not play to mean. Pocky & Rocky is otherwise a really nice game, i like the kikikaikai series but not for a competition.

@shoesama:
n00b I AM MUCH M000R3 H@RDC0REZ TH3N U!!!111

Stage 1 has a hidden 1up and stage 2 is good for milking too. So you have 3 lifes to maximizing your score there. :P

(I don't want this score to be counted, it's just for the LOLZ)

Here's my regular score for this week, without milking or anything:

This weak's lesson, young Jedi, is to learn to be patient. And realizing that it's fun to bush a button for several hours.

Oh and for people who don't know, the melee attack can cancel out most projectiles.

Not on emu, as you can switch to turbo mode. :P

On a serious side:
Offcourse milking annoys me as well, that's why I feel the urge to exploit the games in such stupid manner. It's a result of my frustration about the stupid game design. But I guess it is probably my own fault to begin with. I should've known that most console shmups have such scoring bugs in them. They are only fun when playing them alone, trying to 1cc them. At least for me.

Maybe next game will be more fun for me, there might be some ports of arcade games in this tournament as well.

Is it just me or are the bosses wimpy?

The first two bosses are easy. The 2nd time the white fire-breathing ape shows up I get trampled though. Also, is it possible to kill that loser on the boat who throws bombs?

Yes, but it takes a lot of shots.

I'm getting a bit better...

How come when I start the game I am playing both Pocky and Rocky? Is that supposed to happen?

EDIT: Nevermind. Emulator troubles. I solved it.

Beat the game using savestates. Final boss is really monotonous.

On my first real run, I got to stage 5, which ain't too bad. Got killed before I reached the lab though. The bosses are wimpy once figured out. The levels on the other hand... a lot more learning involved. Haven't figured out how to get through certain portions of 5 without bombing.

Might make a vid if I feel like it.

I like this game a lot. Makes me a little sad I didn't see the Manix tournament earlier. I take it with me everywhere on my PSP.

Anyways, I am none too skilled at shmups, but I find this game fairly easy to pick up and go with. Good luck to all competing.

You can't possibly compete with me in this genre.

Well, I guess that you are right, shmup isn't the word. I was just more classifying it as a "game I would talk about at this board." Anyways, are you actually competing in your tourney, Nemo?

EDIT: I just looked at week #1 and saw you there.
