Looking for a good modern Tetris
Looking for a good modern Tetris
Here's a question for you puzzle fans: I need a recommendation for a good modern non-handheld Tetris (I don't yet have a Wii/PS3/X-Box2).
PS.
I have tried Tetris Worlds for PS2 and it's pretty awful.

If you have a Mac, download Tetris Zone from Blue Planet Software:
http://www.tetris.com/
It's the latest version (I just finished beta testing it) and a Windows version is on the way.

Look for something on PC called Tetris Elements. It came out after Worlds. Upon my glances, it seemed to improve upon Worlds. But the game came and went under the radar.
And yeah, I have PS2 worlds also. It's pretty bland. Good for muting BGM and running through your music collection though.

Atari Games' 1986 PCB version of Tetris is lengendary...
For Ceph,
Here's a recommendation of Tetris PCBs to try out:
Atari Games' 1986 version of arcade Jamma PCB "Tetris" -- it is very compact for it's size and even saves game settings without the need for a backup battery.
American Technos' 1989 arcade Jamma PCB "Blockout" -- very well done arcade "wireframe" version of 3-D Tetris using an 8-way digital-based joystick with top-mounted "drop" push button setup and three additional push buttons for the X, Y, & Z axis rotational functionality.
I could get to "Round 30" with an average of 250,000-300,000 points on just one credit back in 1991 on the arcade PCB version of "Blockout". ^_~
The Atari Lynx version of Blockout was a very close rendition of the arcade PCB but I'd rather prefer the arcade PCB ver. any day..... ^_~

Thanks for your replies. I'm looking for a console Tetris that can be played on a TV with 2 players. I have Tetris for NES, but I'd prefer something a little newer. Tetris Worlds for PS2 doesn't seem to have a continuous mode; every time a new level is reached the screen is cleared - that's why I don't like it.

This Tetris-Version, has it been ported to any platform? Or a similar game?
I really like the way the blocks crush and explode, also the sound-effects of it all.

I have it myself. You can have to up four players at the same time. Even on the same playing field - I've tried it once at a gaming party and it was quite an experience.
There are also options to make it about as fast as Tetris Grand Master. Speaking of which, the options are in Japanese but often accompanied with pictures and the rest aren't hard to figure out. I've translated most of the option menu if somebody needs it. 'course, somebody can probably translate all of it from that screenshot in there, I couldn't figure all of it out by trial and error.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Heh Tetris is my primary game I am playing at the moment
Good game for short quick blasts.
The definitive Tetris game for me is easily the Tetris GrandMaster Series by Arika (TGM), forget everything else. Its the definitive tetris series by far. Featuring 20G (superfast speed!, totally changes the strategy) Lush control and full of tricks.
They're only available on PCB, though (playable via emulation. I use ZINC with a front end for TGM1 and Mame for TGM2 and TAP) and theres also a version on Jap Xbox360.

and just for fun, whats possible :xxx http://youtube.com/watch?v=An_UwvOpaaE
I am currently trying to get GrandMaster rank on TGM1 right now, soo hard...
Ps: If youre going to play tetris on a joystick its recommended using a 4-way stick otherwise youre likly to make miss-drops all the time. Sanwas(HRAP) can be made 4-way by turing the gating 90Degrees, just a tip

Tetris: The Grandmaster Ace on Xbox360. Nothing else is in a similar league to the Grandmaster series as I can tell. The Sega Ages Tetris Collection on PS2 is also worthy if you enjoy the Sega Tetris type which is similar to GM as I feel. Personally I enjoy Tetris DX on GBC as it improves upon original GB Tetris in so many ways.
Otherwise Tetris DS I hear is rather good.

I like playing TGM in MAME, have to disable the sound though. 20G forces you to unlearn old habits, which I haven't been able to do yet.

I'd love to pull that off, but I've never gotten even remotely close (S5 is my best).Ex_Mosquito wrote:I am currently trying to get GrandMaster rank on TGM1 right now, soo hard...
Crystal Cubes
Is it officially Tetris? No. Does it play just like it? Yep. It also requires a good set up to run full screen with all the effects on. It's worth a look and play if you're not picky about its lack off the official "Tetris" name.

Thanks. My Japanese is fine, so that's not a problem for me. Is Kiwamemichi better than Sega Ages 28 - Tetris Collection (in case you have tried it)?Ghegs wrote:Answer: Tetris KiwamemichiCeph wrote:Here's a question for you puzzle fans: I need a recommendation for a good modern non-handheld Tetris (I don't yet have a Wii/PS3/X-Box2).

That does sound bad in theory, but I can see moments when that could be useful. Plus, I hate it when I'm rotating a piece and it sticks in the wrong direction.SFKhoa wrote:When your piece hits the ground, you can keep rotating to keep the piece from "sticking" to the ground and moving on to the next piece.

I'm not talking from reviews or actual play experience mind you, it just looks good. I might recall hearing about this glitch but whatever I don't have a DS nor do I think I'll ever have one.SFKhoa wrote:Tetris DS isn't that great due to the "rotating" exploit.

Not getting a DS? You're missing out on some fun games. Of course, I don't have have a PSP, so I'm missing out on some games on it as well (oh wait, I don't care about watered-down PS2 ports!) ditto for the next-gen systems (too damn broke).Limbrooke wrote:I'm not talking from reviews or actual play experience mind you, it just looks good. But the thing is, you can rotate it for 5 minutes straight and it still won't stick. :3FatCobra wrote:That does sound bad in theory, but I can see moments when that could be useful. Wow, I bet that gets exploited alot on mulitplayer. It can't be that bad, because while you are putting that Z-block in rotating limbo, the other guy is sending wave after wave of garbage blocks at you. You all make it sound like it is as bad as snaking in MarioKart DS.SFKhoa wrote:But the thing is, you can rotate it for 5 minutes straight and it still won't stick. :3FatCobra wrote:That does sound bad in theory, but I can see moments when that could be useful. Snaking isn't bad. As for Tetris, it just means almost anyone can virtually reach the max level in Marathon.FatCobra wrote:

No, because the rotation is only infinite in the solo one player modes. The piece doesn't land right away in multiplayer or vs. computer, but the rotation stops after a couple seconds. Also, in push mode, the stack moves towards the other player when lines are made regardless of whether or not it's being rotated.FatCobra wrote:Wow, I bet that gets exploited alot on mulitplayer.SFKhoa wrote:But the thing is, you can rotate it for 5 minutes straight and it still won't stick. :3FatCobra wrote: That does sound bad in theory, but I can see moments when that could be useful. Infinite rotation doesn't ruin the game since the only modes that it really applies to are Marathon, Endless, and line clear (though at least in line clear, the speed stays at what you set it to, so you won't be forced to use the infinite rotations like you are in Marathon and Endless). Mission mode is timed, so using the infinite rotation doesn't hinder anything in that mode. Mission Mode, playing vs. people online and off, and vs. computer rock. I also like the puzzle modes.

The real meat of Tetris DS is its online play. Infinite spin doesn't work there anyway, and no one cares if you max out lines or points in Marathon. What's your online rating? (Mine's at around 7500...)
I like Tetris DS myself because of the bonuses for T-Spins (in fact, you can look at my YouTube profile for some Tetris DS vids)... but right now Lockjaw is the best Tetris game. Read up on Tetris and Lockjaw at Tetris Concept, and tell 'em Triple Lei sent ya!

Great thread. There's Sakura Card Captor feat. tetris for the PS which is made by Arika, the folks who make the grandmaster arcade pcb's
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XeOAk3sEZQ.
This fits the profile perfectly and can get really hectic. The official page is still online and has a superplay to download that'll blow your socks.
I also like Tetris 4D for the DC, it's not that great in terms of features, but good playability and 4 player possibility.
I wish there was a tate Tetris, that would be awesomorific

The title is spelled with roman letters, but I suppose it's 極め道. That means something like apogee road (or high road), possibly road to the top.Ghegs wrote: ....what does Kiwamemichi mean, anyway?
