Slap Fight

Post by Halloween Jack »

Hi Guys,

Just wondered whether anyone on the boards had a view on the quality of Slap Fight - or is it a classic that's best left on the shelf?

Thanks.

It has it's fans, but probably more people dislike it. I think it's pretty good, especially compared to some other shooters from the time, like Exed Exes, etc. as it has a lot more depth.

It's very oldschool, hard as hell, and has a weird and slightly annoying powerup system, where, everytime you power up, your ship also grows larger, thus making it easier for you to get hit. That's kinda the fun part too, though.

There's also a very good port for the Megadrive, that also features an extra Arranged Version.

Slap Fight is pretty much a Vertical Scrolling Gradius.

Agreed. I have only ever played the MD port, and I really like it. From what I've read it's a pretty faithful conversion.

Slap Fight MD, which is also on the cartridge is basically a whole new game with new graphics, levels and music and a new game mechanism: you can use your ship's add-on parts as bomb.

Recommended.

Don't be misled by the look of the power-up system. The game itself doesn't have anything in common with Gradius.

It's an awesome game; If you like flying Shark, truxton or twin cobra you 'll be right at home. It's not too difficult either. Back in the old days you could 1CC any shmups as long as you put some time to remember the patterns. I own the PCB and 1CCed this one on the hardest setting and I'm not that great. Go for it.

I really like this game and have never felt otherwise. What really intrigued me at first was the name which is absolute bonkers. Once I tried it out I found it to be pretty accesible while still keeping me interested. Easily one of my favourite MegaDrive games of all time.

Only played the MD version, but it's excellent. Similar to Gradius, it's quite unforgivable if you die at certain points. However, it's a very exciting game, contributed by the parts system.

Thanks, but it was the PCB that I was thinking of buying. Although it sounds a good title, I think that I'll hold off for now.

the arcade version is a little uncommon auction-wise, but many of the PCB shops in Japan always have it in stock. the price is usually around 100-120 USD, a bit more expensive if you get the non-JAMMA board with an additional harness adaptor.

anyways it's a lovely game, one of my favorite old-fashioned shooters. colorful graphics, a catchy soundtrack, and a low initial difficulty level which makes for a quick/painless first loop. there's even a few hidden scoring tricks that are sorta neat to uncover on your own.

highly recommended. if you do eventually pick it up, feel free to post some scores (see signature).

Thanks very much llaoyllakcuf, that's really helpful advice. For now though, I think that I'll hold off, but if I see one for a decent price at a later date, I'll know to snap it up.

Cheers,

I've only MAME'd it so far, but it's great.

The powerup system is similar to Gradius, but the way the powerups become part of your vessel seems more inspired by Terra Cresta. If anything, I'd say that V-5 is a closer match to a vertical Gradius :D

i wouldnt say it's as good as gradius though but it does have its quirks, and it hasn't been released and re-released to death over the years on every iteration of consoles.

Basically it sums up like this:

Arcade PCB- AWFUL, wouldn't buy it for $30

Slap Fight Mega Drive- AWESOME, but last time I checked it was $200+

On arcade slap fight, play a pacifist game on first life, and see how far you can get for a very pleasant suprize. :)

Just make sure to pick up a few speedups afterwards fast!
