What else do you do besides shmupping? (rant)

Post by JigsawMan »

So... I have taken a bit of a hiatus for shmups, actually gaming in general, for the past month or two (woah, come to think of it's actually since before Christmas - where does time go?). I guess being discouraged from still being useless at shmupping coupled with buying a new camera has pretty much kept me occupied.

I have even gone so far as to sell Radiant Silvergun, didn't really play it that much - probably once in the last year and I needed the cash for other things.

Anyways, back to the main point of my post; what else do you guys do besides shmups and video games in general? I've recently picked up a Canon 20D DSLR and a few lenses and am having great fun learning about photography and taking loadsa pictures. Most of them pretty poor though.

Slowly getting back into shmups again now that I have had the camera for a month or so... pretty good for me as most things tend to be a seven day wonder!

/end of rant.

Besides shmupping and video games in general I truly enjoy travelling abroad (especially places I've never been before of course...)! Also I enjoy trying out lots of different tastes of beers... (I am a frequently seen guest of the beer temples around here :D).

In a lesser manner I am passionate about football (soccer) by supporting PSV Eindhoven and as most people in general liking certain movie/music genres... :)

Anything stereo related, working on cars, riding motorcycles, and anime are my other hobbies.

I haven't been doing much gaming lately either, to be honest. It's hard to find the motivation to actually want to play a game.

I just bought a house last week (my first ever) and so that will be my new hobby of course. I won't give up shmups though. My fiance and I each have our own hobby rooms so I'll have my tate-able TV set up in mine.

I also play drums.

i've been skateboarding a lot, when it's not raining or snowing. i just bought a new fixed gear track bike, so i'm pretty psyched about that too.

in the summer i'll be spending a lot of time at the beach; in new orleans at my ladies house; and hopefully in L.A. because i really want to go to the thrift stores and the rose bowl, to do some serious vintage shopping.

as for games, you may or may not have noticed, i've pretty much sold off my entire collection, mostly to members on this site and n-g.com and ebay. radiant silvergun, sengoku blade, ikaruga, strikers 1945 1+2, r-type delta, gradius v, etc. have all been leaving my possesion gradually, and i honestly don't miss 'em.

the last game i really got into was RE4, but i never finished it, because i put my gamecube away so that i could play gran turismo 4, which i have since sold. last night i started a new game of ZOE2 and i'll probably play through that, and then start playing MGS3 finally.

the only shmup i really like to play that i still own right now is shikigami 2. i sold my LE DC version for $60 and bought the american PS2 version for $10.

i'd just rather spend my time outside, and when it's shitty out, i'm perfectly happy reading or watching movies. i watched gamera last night. what a sick movie. i'm gonna watch the other 2 later this week because it's supposed to rain, yuck.

yeah, that's my story.
say, by the way...

and in the meantime, it's gone away....

Uhmmm...

- Love to drive aimlessly in my car.
- Work on my car.
- Climbing, though I don't climb outdoors much.
- Love to shoot stuff (inanimate objects, every so often animate objects). Enjoy pretty much anything related to firearms.
- Reloading (see shoot stuff).
- Working out.
- I enjoy programming outside of work, so personal coding projects.
- I wish I had more time to do more woodworking.
- Mountain biking. Love riding through forests with no trails and construction sites.
- Love to "throw stuff" (baseball, frisbee, boomerang, rocks)
- Just like being outside. Perfectly happy sitting around a campfire at night with friends under a clear sky.
- Home improvement is fun.
- Playing with my old dog (who lives at my parent's house).

Ok, this sounds too much like a post on a dating thing ... I'll stop there.

Is there anything else...?

Heh, just kidding. For me it's:

Films (watching them and occasionally, working on them)
Music (my record collection is, to put it mildly, absurd)
Comic Books (just finished reading the I Feel Sick two-shot by Jhonen Vasquez. good stuff.)
Books (currently reading Blink by Malcolm Gladwell. really good stuff)

Ya know...the usual geeky stuff :)

Yeah, I work with cinema too (although typically video as opposed to film). I wonder how many other people on the forum are involved in video or film production?

Work. Endlessly. The pitiful shackles of working for a corporation.

When I'm not in my personal hell, aside from shmups I like to:

1) Drive
2) Watch films/tv
3) Build/drive radio control cars (1/10 scale kit type)
4) Play Xbox Live (mostly Rainbow Six)
5) Restore/play pinball machines. This is the main one actually. For an example of what I do, see:

http://system11.org/temp/big_guns/171204/index.html

The dates probably give a clue as to how much work that one took - I was on holiday all that time too. It's almost 18 years old that one, the underside was as broken as the topside was dirty - it took a lot of time and parts!

Sweet. Do you usually work in a specific department, or are you more of a Richard Kern/DIY-type?

Myself, I mostly work as a DP, although I've done a couple of gigs as a camera operator and gaffer. I just came to an agreement with a producer on my fee for my next feature, coming up in late August. This one actually looks like it *might* be pretty decent ...wish me luck!

20d? isn't that the nice new canon one?
I've had a nikon d70 for about a year now :) I used to do a lot of urban exploration / photography stuff, and am finally starting to get into it again now that it's getting nice out.

Work really takes up most of my time though, been living in texas for about a year now (from Chicago) working at gearbox software (anyone play brothers in arms? lol... )

any other time I have goes towards playing WoW lately, (which I really hate), playing shooters while waiting for food to cook, eating the food while watching movies (japanese / foreign mainly, takashi miike, wong kar-wai, takeshi kitano, etc) or doing other personal projects on the computer related to art/creative stuff. + pc gaming. and sleep.

i need to get out more, but thats been planned with the exploration/photo stuff.

I'm pretty DIY. I rent or own all the equipment I use and edit in my own suite. I tend to do as much of the work I can. I not only write, direct, and produce, but also man camera and edit. Granted, these are all relatively small productions. I've never had a team of more than a dozen people (including actors) and never had a budget of more than $500 (because much of it usually ends up coming out of my pocket).

It's more of a gigantic hobby for me. I do commercial video prooduction and hold a day job so that I can make what I want on my own time.

Are you working with a studio on your next project then?

No, strictly indie. In fact I've never worked for a studio. Part of the reason for this is my location. Most studio features that come to town do so already having hired all of their principles (DP, editor, etc), and only hire locals as grunts, grips, or extras. The other reason is that despite this next one being my sixth feature as a cinematographer, I still feel like I've got a lot to learn before I'm ready for the "big leagues". Although that being said, when someone saw some of the dailies from my last feature (which was shot in black and white), they said, "Hey that looks a lot like that B&W Coen Brothers film." To which I thanked him for the compliment and said, "Yep that's me: the south-of-the-border, non-union-equivalent of Roger Deakins." :D

Video editing here. I can't believe my humble system could do it, however, I was able to create a video invitation to DVD for a girl's 15th birthday party. With Lunar EB music on the background. W00t!

Well, I am supposed to be building a home theater room in my garage. But due to plan changes, a possible move out of town and some other stuff I have decided to stop investing money in it. The cables in the ceiling cost $196 alone.

So my project is put on hold temporarily. I have since decided to build a new PC and search out some hidden gem movies from Hong Kong, Korea and Japan.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

I like to do graphic art and design -- digital stuff mainly; photo composities, 3d, vector art, whatever. I have the most fun when I'm doing stuff that requires working in 6 or 7 software packages.

I also do some DJing, although I've never been as disciplined about it as I should be. Mostly goa/psy stuff and minimal/hard techno.

Other than that I like screwing around with computers, especially installing and tweaking various obscure operating systems and such. I also enjoy reading books and political articles, and writing when I can build myself up enough.

Besides the usual distractions (reading, watching TV), I put a lot of time into playing bass guitar in a rock band. Nothing too unusual except that we have an electric violin player instead of a lead guitarist (the violin is electric, not the player) and that our singer is remarkably talented.

Great hobby, gives me plenty of opportunities to wear my R-Type shirt on stage.

Any hobbies that I am willing to take up (music production, definitely), are on indefinite hiatus until I move, and start afresh.

Seriously, after dealing with unnecessary nonsense and bullshit for most of the day, there really isn't any drive or energy left to do something constructive. -_-;

I play a lot of other types of games, as well, ranging from Metroid to RPGs to Simulation games. I doodle with music now and again, I write fantasy stories, I fix/build computers, and spend entirely too much time on LiveJournal.

Yeah the Canon 20d is the new(ish) Canon 8.2MP one. I love it, although I am learning that its not so much about the camera as being able to actually take good pictures with whatever you have. I have just bought "Understanding Exposure" ISBN 0-8174-6300-3 and it is a great book for learning how to actually take good pics.

I used to think video gaming was expensive. But the DSLR world of Canon lenses is proving to cost somewhat more than a rather large collection of PCBs :( lenses hold their value though. sorta.

Driving... mmmm... one of my favourite past times - how did I manage to miss that off? I don't have anything special. Just a 1.5 Mazda 323, but it does the job. Plus the cheapest unleaded fuel is now 83.9p /litre (thats $1.57/litre) it just proves to be too expensive to go for those 100 mile drives that I used to do so much a couple of years ago.

Also, speaking of TV - I have obtained all the episodes of the OC up until S2e17 - what a fantastic series, I highly recommend it to everyone.
