metal slug 3 (and uh.. contra :) )

Post by MovingTarget »

Is this not considered a shmup? The ony diference between this and a typical shmup is a)gravity b)unforced scrolling and c)you can kinda *cough* aim *cough*

its called a run and gun right? I still think its a shmup also because your basically blowing the crap out a stuff constantly...

Anyway i love this game(ps2 version :|) what r your opinions of it? Havnt heard any mention of it at all on these boards.

Cant wait to pick up metal slug 1 for the saturn, anyone know if 4 & 5 is getting a uk release?

The Metal Slug series are great games, but not shmups. As you guessed, they are classed as run & guns. Gameplay-wise, there is a huge difference. Sure, you're blowing the crap out of stuff either way, but what you are DOING is completely different. For example, in Metal Slug you are moving from platform to platform, controlling the flow of enemies by hanging back when needed, seeking shelter, all of which are actions that you can't do in shmups.

Also check out Metal Slug X, which is my favorite. I haven't played 4 or 5 yet, but I hear 4 is kind of weak anyway.

I always called it a platform shoot 'em up. Though it's not got as nice a ring to it as run n' gun. :(

4&5 are being converterd to PS2 & Xbox, though I'm not sure they will get a PAL release. Depends how well 3 did I suppose.

Have you ever played Super Contra? (or Super Probotector as it's known in Europe). For me, it's the best example of a platform shooter.

Well some parts of stage 5 and 6 of Metal Slug 3 can be considered "pure" shmup....

Like the flying bits?

Icarus, ive heard a lot about contra and am gonna look into it, hopefully its got a version on the saturn? i dun wanna start with the recent ps2 version, unless someone recomends otherwise...

I really hope slug 4&5 gets a pal release, but its kinda dougbtful i suppose, judging from the gamefaqs metal slug 3 boards not many people are playing it. But ya never know

I'm absolutly refusing to use credits with metal slug 3, after a few hours i can almost get to level 3 lol. I'm confident i can get much further with time though

The best Contra is Contra:Hard Corps for Genesis, IMHO.

Also check out Gunstar Heroes and Alien Soldier, if run and guns are your thing.

Sorry I guess this is getting further off topic. :P

I concur since it's a bossfest much in the style of Treasure's games (despite it having been developed after Treasure left), although some people like Contra III or Super C (arcade) more.

And yeah, you'd do best NOT to get the Contra on the Saturn lest you be disappointed. It's not even 2D at all, unlike its slightly less shoddy successor.

I prefer Contra III. Hard Corps is way to methodical and boring for me.

At least in Contra III, you're always on your toes(specially on hard).

I've never played Contra:Hard corps on the MD but i reckon it'd have to be pretty special to better Contra Spirits on the SNES. I used to work in a videogames shop in my youth, and as we were a little indie store we did a neat line in imports. I still remember the day i got to work and that demo was running on the shop SNES, it just blew us all away! The game was pretty tough, but so much fun you persevered just to get a glimpse of the next level. Don't even get me started on thec music-GENIUS! I still say that the last level's music when you were climbing the wall being attacked by the giant-tailed creature, ripped off the music from the film predator! Class game though...

At the risk of sounding a complete idiot.... does genesis = mega drive? if so, will a mega drive game basically play on a genesis?

Yes, it will...if you have a converter cart. I picked up a $5 game genie for my genny, and it's worked a treat on all megadrive games I've tried on it. All two of 'em, that is...

Genesis is the U.S. version of the mega drive and yeah, i think you need a converter to play import games.

edit- too slow typing! :D

Yup, Genesis is the American name for the MegaDrive. The MegaCD is called SegaCD in the USA. And yes, 95% of cartridge games will run on any region MD/Genny. Unless its a chiplocked game (region lock), then you'll either need a pass-through region cart or just hardwire 2 switches into the MD to choose between 50/60Hz and Jpn/Eng language.

Ok, so Run n' Gunners aren't shmups, we've established that (lots). But they are close enough. Is it possible we could have a separate R&G forum on here? Then all us fans of the Metal Slugs, Contra etc would have somewhere to post instead of here in the Shmups Chat forum. Also, what about a small R&G mini-site attached to the main Shmups.com site?

I really like R&Gs. I've finally got all 6 MetalSlugs on MVS :D and I'm looking forward to getting a MD (again) so I can play Contra and GunStar Heroes.

I love Contra III to pieces but I am glad to see I am not the only one who thinks HC is the series apex. I am not exactly sure but I just enjoy it more (perhaps the stonger "Treasure" feel of the game does have something to do with it. )

That being said I cant imagine playing it with a lifebar. The game can be tough but it's not that hard!

That's cos it's the Japanese version of Contra on VGI. The US version seems to go for $20 on Ebay. Same with Gunstar Heroes: US version is worth $10, Jpn version goes for a good $50.

But then just compare the case art. I'd rather pay the extra and have this, than this nasty peice of 'design' on my shelf. And yeah, the US cover for Contra is just as nasty. However, I have just found a huuuuge scan of the amazing Jpn cover

I've heard that Metal Slug 3 is more shmuppy then the other games in the series, though I don't know if this is true or not.

I'm the biggest Metal Slug fan this side of the Rio Grande, but I'm wondering why this thread hasn't been moved to OT yet. Are these sorts of topics commonplace in shmups chat nowadays?

or if the game is not region encoded, take the top half off the genesis (with a plain old screwdriver). this is how i play my copy of Curse (jp mega-drive only).

The JP version of Hard Corps is one of the most expensive MD sidescrollers along with Vampire Killer, Alien Soldier, Alisia Dragoon, El Viento, Devil Hunter Yoko, and Pulseman (at least last I checked).

I actually think the US Gunstar Heroes box is alright. It didn't attract me at all when I was a kid but it still looks decent, if far inferior to the excellent JP art.

Ah, give Dylan or TF a bit of time...they'll sort this out soon enough, I'm sure.
Given all the new faces on this board (myself included), this sort of thing is bound to happen from time to time...

just saw it here. Wow, that's all i have to say.

us box art (for genesis at least) is really inefficient. they didn't use the space they had well.
