MVS Shmup Options?
I'm just about to take delivery of my very first cab, a 4 Slot Neo Geo MVS. I've played a few shooters on my MAME Laptop, but I'm really wanting to have the full cab experience.
Untill I get a Jamma cab, I was wondering what the killer Shmups are for the machine. I've got Metal Slug 1/2 which are in the platforming genre. What would you guys suggest I look for?

I recommend:
- Aerofighters 2 and 3 (I prefer 2)
Blazing Star
Captain Tomaday
Last Resort
Pulstar
Prehistoric Isle II
Shock Troopers (similar to guerrilla war, not really a shmup)
Strikers 1945 Plus
Twinkle Star Sprites (sort of a shmup/puzzle game)
- Alpha Mission 2
Andro Dunos
Ghost Pilots
Zed Blade

I would check out Zed Blade, at least. It is a bit cheesy, but it has some really cool enemy transformations, and some fantastic over-the-top music. Alpha Mission 2 is tedious near the end, but deserves a check-out due to great music and some fun early levels.Circa2113 wrote:I'd stay away from:

I second that. Hit those first - and know that although they are technically in the same series they are very different games so you will be getting some diversity in play mechanics between the two. Pulstar has R-Type style memorization play while Blazing Star is more twitch and skill oriented. Both have some of the best graphics ever seen in 2d shooters.shinsage wrote:Blazing Star and Pulstar should last you for quite a while, both of the Neo's finest when it comes to shooters.
Blazing Star happens to be one of my favorites for the system, really amazing game.

No need. If it's bad - it's bad. I honestly think that the name and the wait is what made us have such hope in the title. Alot of people wouldn't want to believe that it would be mediocre just due to thier fandom of Pulstar and wish for a follow up, even if only a spiritual one. Then again, i haven't played past the first two sections of the first level so i don't have an opinion on it myself just yet. I would still love to love it and hopefully i will ^__^Specineff wrote:And Last Hope.Circa2113 wrote: I'd stay away from:

I liked Andro Dunos quite a bit. I'd certainly recommend it!
I can vouch for Aerofighters 2, Strikers 1945, and also Viewpoint. The latter in particular having a kickass soundtrack.

Thanks for all that info!
I'm picking up the cab tomorrow, and I'm really looking forward to it. It's only a 5 footer, but I think now I have the bug things will move on (as long cute games can blindside the missus!).
I was a big fan of Shock Troopers 2 in the arcade near me a few years ago so thats one I am defo getting, didn't really think it fell into the Shmup genre though like you said.
I've kept trying to download that review in reply #1, but it's awful slow going (14kb/s)

If it came out to be a good bit cheaper than the cd version is now. (200+, I think) I probably would. I've played it a few times on the NGCD and really enjoyed it.Brain Slug wrote:What's everyone think of Chotetsu Bri'kinger/Ironclad?
Should the wonderful day come when someone finds and releases the ROMs of the MVS cart, would you splash out on an MVS/AES conversion, or is it not that good?

That day will never come because Brikin'ger was purposely developed as a CD exclusive (among a few other games), so more people would buy a Neo Geo CD system. Any rumors of an MVS cart are completely unsubstantiated.Brain Slug wrote:Should the wonderful day come when someone finds and releases the ROMs of the MVS cart
