but it is quite difficult to avoid metals/powerups
this is one of the biggest problems in the game... i want to keep my fav weapon, but every 10sec a new one comes along (and u can't avoid it every time.....)
did u try to kill every option of the mid boss?? then this guy get's angry

Right, there is a constant stream of powerups and medals. So you have to avoid bullets AND a bunch of powerups floating down the screen slowly all the time. What I'd like to figure out is how to really LOWER the rank so it wouldn't be a big deal if you pick up some powerups and do some medalling. I don't think dying lowers rank like in Ibara. In contrast, it seems the game punishes you for dying. You lose all your powerups. Dying on a boss is a HUGE pain in the ass as you're often left with a pee-shooter for the rest of the fight while the rank stays the same. You're forced to bomb a lot on the boss to get through the fight and this in turn skyrockets the rank even higher. That's the main thing that pisses me off about this game.

twe, I think I feel about the same as you do with this game. As soon as I find myself really having a good time, something happens to turn me way off. I want to like it, but the game won't let me.

NTSC-J: What character are you playing as? I've really come to like Kasumi A-type, particularly her wide shot.

Part of me really doesn't want to give up on the game as I think it's just a matter of figuring out how the stupid game system really works. I think when the superplay DVD comes out it will shed light on things (hopefully it's still in the works). I mean, I play the game and certain elements I love but others I think to myself "there's no way they INTENDED it to be like this, I must be playing it wrong!".

Dying on a boss in Pink Sweets is like dying and losing your power-ups in Truxton. Major pain in the ass uphill battle. The bosses in Pink Sweets shoot too many "instant death" lasers as well.

I played a bit some more today and I think I'm slowly warming up to it. This game is really weird as the more I play it the more I seem to like it, and I actually look forward to playing it a lot when I'm not playing it even though when I'm playing it I'm not totally sure how much I like it. Does that make any sense??

I watched that Kasumi replay again and I notice that guy dies a lot on purpose in certain spots. He dies the split second right after he defeats the 1st level boss, for example, running into a bullet stream before it leaves the screen. That's the absolute best place in the game to die, as the start of each level is light on enemies/bullets and is ripe with powerups.

In Harder mode, it's pretty crazy as after you beat a boss it spews a beautiful screen-cluttering stream of suicide bullets for like 10 seconds. You have to keep bombing to stay alive. But on the bright side it's an easy way to suicide if you need to lower the rank before the next level.

Makes perfect sense to me. That's exactly how I felt for the first few weeks (mind you, I was only playing 3-4 credits a week back then).

This really is a game which you DON'T want to be playing one credit at a time, in an arcade enviroment.

Footage here of the famed Galford tearing up stage 3 in harder mode. He manages to find 4 1-ups along the way as well as maintain his chain.

With the extra man the boss sometimes gives, that makes five possible extra men available in level 3. Outside of making the two tanks collide, does anyone know exactly what triggers the other extra men on that level?

I got an extend from the mid-level boss after destroying all (or all but one) of those pods that shoot the blue laser columns.

it's pretty annoying, but I've triggered it on multiple plays with AB and S-type Kasumi

That guy is hardcore, he has a Normal mode score of 19.8 mil with Shasta, pretty sure that's the WR with her. From his blog, it sounds like he's trying to beat the 20mil lace score. Not to mention his 12mil ALL in Harder mode with Shasta. Great Stage 3 vid too, hope he releases more or is commissioned to do the superplay DVD!

He writes some funny things in that blog, such as "People ask me why I keep playing such a shitty game. Personally, because I think the game is fun, it's fine for me to keep playing it".

And my fave is "there are three things that keep me from improving my scores faster: 1)I don't have much skill, 2)the arcade with this game is far, and 3)I can only play on the weekends."

Crazy.

Okay, that tears it, someone has to figure out exactly how this freakin' game works already, its inner workings sound weirder every time I hear about it.

That's Galford for you. For someone that "doesn't have much skill", he still holds the world record for Tavia in Gunbird 2 with a no miss, no bomb run. He's a savage.

I can't believe none of this is discussed on those japanese forums (2ch?). To me it seems there are requirements for killing mid-bosses a particular way, and then reaching some limit for shooting down flying enemy (and even shooting certain enemy bullets) to get the extends. I wish I had more time to play this.

@Plasmo,

As far as I know the WR is 20,614,480 w/ Lace, done by YOS.K. This was posted in Arcadia 078 (Nov 2006).

This comment won't add anything to the discussion. But, I love Pink Sweets. I have had it for a few weeks now and find myself sucked in right away. It has that one more go mentality to it.

More like, I died a stupid death and I know I could do much better, so one more try!

I've pretty much hit a wall with Lace at ~3.5M ignoring rank. I just can't beat my latest highscore. I tried out Shasta and leached 2 more extends off the last level 3 midboss! This game is wild.

I just got Excellent's mailing list, they are now officially sold out of new Pink Sweets kits. Fujita may have one or two left, but they could be already sold out as well. Those interested in a full new kit should contact Fujita or perhaps Legend ASAP, because this kit is going to be very hard to find in the future.

Excellent is now finally sold out of new Ibara kits too. They have a couple Espgaluda 2 kits left however.

i picked up PS a little while ago from fujita and i must say it's worth every penny! i really suck at it but i'm enjoying it big time. the best way i think to describe this game is like summer carnival 2006: recca in toyland. it can be quite a burden on the senses with the hectic multitude of big objects on screen which pretty much all are overly bright and have heavily saturated colors. the wild and intense (but very cool) music.

pink sweets is tremendously hard and it has quite a steep learning curve. but if you're willing to invest some time in the game then it's really a good game! so if you like recca, bakraid, battle garega and ibara all rolled into one with a very, very sweet cave flavor (provided you can afford it) then you should definitely go for Pink Sweets while you still can!

The Pink Sweets world for some reason reminds of me Gunbird 2. I don't mean in gameplay style, but artistically.

A full Midi & Meidi (A-type) ALL run done by GER has been posted on GER's site (7 separate video files to download):

http://www2.dokidoki.ne.jp/ayame/trash.htm

But don't get too excited, it's another boring "keep rank as low as possible" run with no medalling (practically no scoring at all actually), and a very low final score. :?

Why is it everyone who releases videos of this game is doing low-score runs? I don't get it.
