...for a while. My Slime-Line US PSTwo died today. Last night when I was playing Champions, it did freeze once, but only once-but today I got NO picture out of it at all.

Oh well; the Sony place I'm sending it into is in Laredo, Texas-not that far from Denver.

Well; I ain't givin' up on Sony yet. The PSTwo's are the most durable model of PS2; and since I treated my very delicately, it must have been a lemon. Every product has it's lemons, and Sony's sending me a replacement PSTwo.

Besides, my parents allowed me to , the other day, order a BUNCH of PS1 and PS2 games for my birthday on May from Ebay. All but one of these has already been payed for via Paypal; so even if I wanted to move on to another form of hardware, I couldn't.

And I wouldn't want to, the PS2 has more games that I like then any other console ever made.

Too many great games on the PSX / PS2 to give up on it. Hell, I should just buy a Japanese PSX at some point just to have it around... (and to play toaplan shooting battle!)

I just talked to the guy at GameCrazy that I bought it from, and he says that I got a bad apple for sure-after I told him that there wasn't an instruction manual in the original box.

In the meantime, besides the 2 shmups I have on my DC, I suppose I could MAME it up-but every time I've done that in the past I end up deleting all the games 'cause I feel like a thief.

Japanese PS2 is the way to go. I just got the last model they made before the slimline and it seems good. It's quiet as hell. I used to own a US system that had a fliptop and the fan on that thing was obnoxious. Figured I'd just go with a JP system as all I play on PS2 (for the most part) are import shooters. Any other must haves I'll just import.

I may get a Japanese PSTwo when I have a job, and if we see more (and better) Type-X Ports...not that there aren't any good shmups for it now, there certainly are, but I want at LEAST Raiden III if I'm gonna shell out for one of these.

Right now, I'm quite satisfied with a US PSTwo, and since Sony's just sending me another one of those, and it's not a repair, I shouldn't have too long to wait. I am not gonna agonize over this at all, and loose some of the recent progress I've made with my anxiety; after it's been shipped back to Sony, I'm just gonna leave it in God's hands.

I'm with you on that - the last of the old shape PS2 really are good machines. I've got the second release Sakura one, it's quiet and nice looking.

Still have my DC from launch back in '99, running strong too. It's turned nicotine yellow though... all except the modem which I had in the closet while my BBA yellowed up on it over the years.

Some folks just don't have any luck. I've always had luck with my system, and all of 'em have lasted me enough for me to say I got my cash worth. Also, I buy my systems new whenever I can, buying used systems is a gamble. People will sell broken systems left and right.

Well if my PSTwo was going to break, then I'm glad it just flat out died. Because it takes Sony a LOT less time to send a new one then to fix broken ones, AFIK.

Nictotene yellow is why all consoles, IMO, should either be grey or black. You know, you can clean any console with a rag or cloth that's been sprayed with Windex-just don't spray any on the actual console.

In any case, I usually use MAME to "tide me over" in between getting games and/or a console, so I'm just gonna do it and not feel guilty about it-and RF it up! 8)

I actually doubt that. The + versions (50k) of the side-loading PS2's seem to have the least problems. Never heard of DREs from them, no common problems, no overheating. Reliable stuff.

Yeah, from what he told me, he said that it plays slow on PS2. It doesn't work with the PS-X-Change 2 either.

I personally think the slimline design is stupid, if only because Sony forgot to add one critical component to it...THE FAN.

No fan, no cooling, no way to safely play your PS2 for extended periods of time. Apparently it has an 'autoshutoff' for when it gets too hot...Stupid, since you could easily end up having it shut off right before you save.

I was well impressed with the overall design of PStwo. I mean, it looks small in pictures, but in real life its tiny. Very impressive bit of kit, but yeah it is worrying the lack of cooling.

It is shocking that it took a huge multinational company like $ony serveral MoBo versions to make the damn PS2/two reliable. I mean, out of 12 versions (inc slim) it seems only v.11 & 12 aren't gonna break if you sneeze on it. However, the way $ony sees it, if you have 10 -20 or so PS2 games what you gonna do when the machine breaks? Waste all those games? Nah, you're gonna go give $ony another £100 for a nice new PStwo. Gits.

How long can you play for before the auto shut off happens?

I was thinking of importing a Japanese one, but if it's up to those kind of tricks, maybe not

5-6 hours of straight gaming wasn't enough to do it on my modded PStwo.Leaving it on for 18 hours straight running a game with the disc removed wasn't enough either. I'm guessing you would have to seriously under-ventilate it. That or I'm lucky when it comes to consoles :)

At first I was going to post how I wasn't having any problems with mine, all this 'ps2 is unreliable' is perpetrated by the haters, etc. But now mine freezes all the time and the music randomly cuts out. I've taken perfect care of it too.

What the hell $ony.

Same here, but I've had to exchange my PS1 centerpiece. Of course, I treat my systems like babies.

Talking of reliability.. check this out.

I have -

System - Date bought - Known problems

3DO FZ-1 - September 1994 - No problems, boxed as new

PS1 SCPH1000 - December 1994 - Doesnt boot everytime, but works 90%. This is a modded unit.

Derby Stallion Saturn - July 2002 - No problems (doesnt load outrun)

N64 - Japanese launch Mar 96? - No problems

NGPC - 1999 - No problems

PS2 - March 2000 - Component output loses picture if cable not in exactly right.

Dreamcast - Jap launch orange box "day 1" machine - No problems

Sega Genesis - Bought in the last 2 years - No known problems

SNES - Bought in the last 2 years - No known problems

Gamecube - Bought Xmas Xmas 2003 - Still going strong

Machines I had a problem with -

Saturn - Jan 95 - Pixellated graphics on most games.. sold on ebay as faulty.

Neo Geo CDZ - 2001 - Faulty laser unit - Sold on ebay as faulty.

PS2 - Jap launch machine - Memory card fault due to DVD drivers (common problem) - Sold on ebay as prestine condition as it was.

Gamecube - Bought during biohazard launch - Mod switch faulty from buyrite. Send item back, got same machine back, in a crumpled box! It worked this time.

so overall, I think i've done pretty good. I've got a few machines from launches that still work like the day I bought them, so thats pretty good.

I've got a refurbished PS2 and the only time it ever gives me trouble is when a) I'm playing PS2 in my uncle's dusty house and dust gets in the lense....I fix that occaisionally with a Disc Lens cleaner. or b) whenever I play Dragonball Z Budokai 3, whenever I pick Goten it ends up freezing on me....dunno why...DBZB3 is the only game that's given me trouble thus far. Oh, and I occaisionally get Graphics Flickers from time to time if I play 3D games alot...espcially stuff like Metal Gear Solid 2 or 3.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Hey Dave, when is your birthday? I too will be having a birthday in May...the 7th to be exact.

To all you guys worried about overheating. Just keep the thing well ventilated. You can even use a small fan to increase air flow!

I also haven't really had any problems with my consoles, except for the original Playstation, of which I've gone through 3. The modded one is the one that lasted the longest, and its still running strong. (Red n White box model)
