Best NES Shmups?
Ever so true. Some of those stages aren't so easy when you seem to be a good deal weaker going into them.zaphod wrote:For those who want a pure shooter expereince, for The GUardian Legend, try the password
"TGL"
Prepare to be pwned.
TGL's a great game. Lifeforce got me into shooters and Stinger was a fun little game that also had both hori and vert stages. Crisis Force also seems to be a fun one, although I haven't played it much. And speaking of NES games like Power Strike, what about that one by Compile called GunNac or something like that? It's a pretty good one.

No Power Strike is a different series.

I rather enjoy SCAT, Zanac, Twin Cobra, and Burai Fighter. Legendary Wings is good for a go-through once in a while, though somewhat easy. I also occasionally pop in Gradius & Life Force, as well as Abadox, but I find those all to be more difficult, so I haven't given them much time. I should however, because I know they're all good games. I also enjoy the NES conversion of Fantasy Zone & play that once in a while.

Was there was a version released for the NES?
Wasn't saying that. Someone mentioned that Crisis Force was like Power Strike (I think), so I was bringing up another game along those lines because it was by the same company.

My favs have been:
Zanac
Recca
Life Force
Sky Shark
but most of all, and one I haven't seen mentioned yet, Sky Kid. I played the holy hell out of that game in my younger days. Still one of my favorite NES games, period.

Uchuu Keibitai SDF is pretty damn impressive, too. And a bit tough and uncompromising too.
If you want to try something a little different, try Fuzzical Fighter -- a SHMUP RPG.
I second Gyruss; it's awesome. I'll also suggest Tetrastar the Fighter and of course Parodius!

Yeah, that one's pretty obscure. While we're on obscure, how about the NES port of Thudercade? Or The Adventures of Dino-Riki?shinsage wrote:What else than Starship Hector? Classic.
Actually, scratch all 3 of those since none are very good. Sky Kid is great though, everyone should play that and then post of the high score thread we've got for it here.
Abadox is also pretty nice. Hard as hell though, but it's got a nice sense of style and some interesting level design.
How long has Scat been known as something to do with fecal pornography though? It couldn't have been past the 90's... if so then well... Scat music wouldn't have had a 1 hit wonder/1second phase here in the united states.

Then again...
But Americans were cooler in the 90's... and even cooler in the 80's. We just eat nuts now. Rambling... sry.

Haha, no doubt. I've never played Thundercade, but I'm always reminded of the NES Thunderbirds, which was also kinda shitty. The cinematics with the creepy puppets made up for it.Andi wrote:Yeah, that one's pretty obscure. While we're on obscure, how about the NES port of Thudercade? The only thing Starship Hector has going for it is its name (Starship...Hector?) and the box art, and that was stolen from the Famicom art of Star Soldier.
Hey, Thundercade is great in arcades...I think it's Toaplan, is it not?Andi wrote:Yeah, that one's pretty obscure. While we're on obscure, how about the NES port of Thudercade? Or The Adventures of Dino-Riki?shinsage wrote:What else than Starship Hector? Classic.

Also, Sky Kid is great. I bet Bloodreign will be happy to hear some love for that one :) Surprised to hear that Thundercade isn't a good port; I'll have to check it out...
Recca's the best, but good luck getting your hands on it for a decent price!
My other favorites are Over Horizon and Gun Nac. I was glad to see someone said Over Horizon, but not nearly enough said it. One of the best Hori shmups for the system next to Lifeforce/Salamander.
Did anyone say Terra Cresta?

Oh, I forgot about Thunderbirds. That game was WAY boring. Here's another mediocre one we also forgot, Captain Skyhawk! They remind me of one another somehow.shinsage wrote:Haha, no doubt. Yeah, it's slow, flickery, with a too big hitbox and mushy controls. Plus, it's ugly. I actually sort've like it though. It plays a big like Tiger-Heli (or at least the NES port of Tiger-Heli).Ed Oscuro wrote:Also, Sky Kid is great. I'm pretty into collecting NES games, so I've hardly played anything but the NES ports of arcade shooters.

I did. I can't compare it the arcade version because I've only played the NES one. It's pretty fun, but has a power up system that's hard to get used to, and is hard as hell. The third level boss is practically luck.Hilden wrote:What about Image Fight? Wasn't that an inspiration for RSG? Anyone play that one on NES?
The Image Fight port is pretty decent considering the system. Remains quite true to the original, and on its own it's a solid title.
I used to confuse Alpha Mission and Image Fight all the time, mainly because of how similar the title bars at the top of the cart look alike. I can't even remember what AM is like now...
