Linux Shmups (updated)
So ummm... does anyone know of any good shmups for Linux? I've seen a few ABA games.

Re: Linux Shmups (updated)
Are we talking native only or, say, anything you can get working with Wine or DOSbox? (I generally don't even bother compiling native versions of the ABA titles anymore.)
There's also Chromium BSU, but I've never much cared for it.

that's cool. Most of those ABA games are difficult to get to run in linux since they use the D compiler.
you're best bet with linux is simply to use emus like raine and xmame.sdl
I'm surprised other emus aren't that great for linux though. Gens with opengl is good but always has a bit of sound lag, gngeo is a fine neo geo emu, but neocd/sdl is nowhere near as great as neocdz for windows.
For me, I tend to use windows only for games and keep linux for everyday surfing, downloading, music, and so on. This works out in a few ways; one being it keeps me from playing too many games, and keeps viruses and spyware from screwing up my game experience.
maybe I got OT there....

That's actually what I do. There are a handful of games I play somewhat regularly that I literally have to use Windows to be able to play, so it's really the only reason I have a dual-boot scheme. There are a number of freeware shooters that work in Wine, actually, it'd take me a while to post them all. I know Cave Story actually works wonderfully (if that's included as a shooter).Kingbuzzo wrote:For me, I tend to use windows only for games and keep linux for everyday surfing, downloading, music, and so on. The only reason I really have a PC is for games. The only reason I have to use Linux anymore is for work.

I tried to just get rid of windows completely for political reasons, but I guess I wasn't serious enough about it cause I was right back so I could play DOD:Source.
Gaming in linux isn't so bad though, you can play every ID game (quake, doom), and all the Unreal Tournament games have linux installers.
cedega is an interesting program, though it seems to discourage games for linux more than it enables it.

I'll get to working on most of the stuff I have, I guess. I really wish the Touhou games ran well (or at all in pretty much every case) because I really like them. The biggest problem with running stuff like this in Wine is simply that you have to know how to have to configured for the best compatibility. It's usually best just to keep Wine set to emulate 98 instead of 2000 or XP, but sometimes you have to tell it 2000 or XP to get it to work with some Japanese games or games that simply won't run on 98 by itself.louisg wrote:I'd actually be really interested to see some kind of list of WINE-able shmups (and with which WINE version?)hikarutilmitt wrote: There are a number of freeware shooters that work in Wine, actually, it'd take me a while to post them all. Edit: I know I'm not the only Linux user here (clearly), but if there's anything someone would like me to try in Wine post a link and I'll test it.
Also Edit: it's worth noting that Magic Engine runs pretty much perfectly in Wine, though last time I tried (about 5 Wine versions ago at least) gamepad support was iffy and I needed to use qjoypad (a Joy2Key-type program for Linux) to play anything. ZSNES, Gens, MAME, FCE Ultra and such all have Linux variants to use.

My problem with Mednafen is that command-line (yes, I know, Linux, etc etc) isn't something that should be "forced" for an emulator to run these days. Especially when there are THAT many switches. ZSNES ported pretty much perfectly to Linux with the (ugly) GUI intact, I don't see why they couldn't have provided even a minimalist frontend for it.
That and Magic Engine, other than requiring a license to use, is pretty damned good and useful as an emulator, especially when there are so few good PCE emulators around.

I play more games under Linux than the average Windows gamer plays under Windows. I just don't happen to play FPS or RTS games. For some reason, people think they are the only games in existence.landshark wrote:Not a big PC gamer huh?
The only reason I have a PC is to make a living. I do that by building very large servers and clusters of servers using Linux.landshark wrote:The only reason I really have a PC is for games. The only reason I have to use Linux anymore is for work.

B Intruders will actually run with Wine set to emulate 98, though I'm not sure if it "runs" as it should since I can barely see anything through all of the tearing and screen updates. The others either didn't run or I couldn't figure out how to get them to go to anything TO run. Usually the desktop comes up and then just exits, though.dczx wrote:Having some problems with WINE and End Effector, Prototype, b intruders... I wonder if it's just my stupid ATI card.
This should also be taken lightly, though, because I've had a LOT of freeware and demo shmups run either way too fast or just play like crap in Windows itself. Sometimes I feel like I'm cursed.

Thank you for trying to keep a list of these games.
I switched to linux years ago and use it at home pretty much every day. As I see it Windows is more cluttered and troublesome and every time I start it up to play some games I am reminded of that. But with so many shmups and homebrew I can never get rid of it entirely, no matter how much I want to. Games are just more important than operating systems.

Chorensha has worked perfectly with Wine for a long time (still going as of 0.9.34.)louisg wrote:I'd actually be really interested to see some kind of list of WINE-able shmups (and with which WINE version?)
I just got a copy of Soldier Force and despite a few minor glitches it works very well (tested again with 0.9.34)
Speaking of Studio SiestA, the Airrade Air demo doesn't seem to have any sound at all, but otherwise works well.
Has anyone ever gotten Warning Forever to work acceptably with Wine? For me it runs at about 1/6 speed (and windowed mode doesn't work at all, but I'm not really concerned about that.)

sdmkun is great for short practice sessions. And if you know any japanese it'll give you hints on how to beat the patterns (tho some of them just say "impossible"). When I'm doing work in X, I'll get bored and switch out to the console and run it in framebuffer mode, die, then switch back and keep working.
Shinichiro.h (the author) is a really nice guy and he has good English. He helped me with a compilation error I was getting.

I just upgraded to a Geforce FX 5200 AGP with 256MB just to fix driver issues. So far it's been working great. Apparently, NVidia has been getting more love from the Linux community than the other card makers.dczx wrote:Having some problems with WINE and End Effector, Prototype, b intruders... "Tenmado" is in most Linux distro repositories. its a chain-based shmup similar in some ways to Radiant or Ikaruga. Each enemy is either red, blue, or purple. Shoot a red enemy and your ship turns red. Blue and purple are the same. When red, you can ONLY shoot red enemies to continue your chain. Same with blue. When purple, however, you can shoot any color enemy to switch to that color and continue your chain. For example, you can shoot 10 red enemies in a row, shoot a purple, then shoot 5 blues. You now have 16 chains. if, however, you shoot 10 reds then shoot a blue, you just broke your chain. There's only one gun and no bullet absorbtion or special attacks at all. Very fun game if you like that type of shmup though.

Anyone had any luck trying out the Trouble Witches demo under WINE?
I can install and run it, but once I get to the title screen, keyboard input doesn't work. If I hit control-C, all my keypresses are displayed in the terminal, as if it had focus and not the game.
Running WINE 0.9.41 under Ubuntu Feisty. I'll try it tomorrow in windowed mode and see if I can force it to get focus.
[edit] Nope, windowed mode is no go - I can't get the game to grab keyboard focus. All keystrokes go through to the terminal running below. I might try again tomorrow with a USB gamepad and see if that works, although I don't know how WINE deals with emulation of HID USB devices.
[edit2] Upgraded to 0.9.42 today. Still not able to get keyboard focus.

WINE 0.9.44 is out today, and Trouble Witches now gets keyboard focus, so it's playable.
However the sound seems buggered now. All I get is white noise out of the speakers (and rather loud too, giving me a fright the first time it did so).
Ah well. At least it plays now, even if I have to mute the sound.
[edit]
0.9.45 is out, and it works 100%, sound and all. Yay.
