I did have a question, but I decided to re-read your rules and realized that I'm dumb.

Forgive me. :P

With that said good luck everyone!

Oh ok - i hope in something a bit more non-emulation friendly for next week (ie not all the games starting from $200 and above)

I'll pass what I can't play on its native hardware. Luckily not being team based like Edge's tournament I'm not doing any harm to my team. :)

It doesn't appear till Friday. Gives people a chance to actually play and get acquainted with the game before posting a score after 5 minutes.

Do the boss's time out? I'm thinking of milking the battleship indefinitely or something. >_>

What is the rule on ship speed? Since you have to pause the game to modify the speed. I don't like the default speed...

Ok, indefinite milking of bosses is possible. So much for that... -_-

Is that why there is no high score thread for Eliminate Down, at least I didn't see one...

I can't even break 1 million right now.

Oh yeah, on the second boss I can pull of my favorite "trick".

Position yourself in a safespot and make sure your milking the boss's shots but don't hit him. Then lie your joypad leaning against a book's edge to keep the fire button pushed. Like this:

Image Image

So I positioned myself over the boss destroying his missiles with that backward shot. In order to get a snapshot to show my point, I switched to turbo mode on emu. This was looking good while I watched, so I went to do something else and noticed that after a while the boss ship where moving more and more to the right, and that destroyed part was scrolling in from the left...

Image

After repositioning and letting the game continue on turbo mode, something else entered the screen from the left...

Image

Surprise it's the boss again and his missing friends the graphic bugs. :P
I was still scoring from that missiles by the way.

Image

I guess this was caused by desync from turbo mode. But it could also be possible that they just had a minimal error in the boss's movement. So that after 40 movement loops he might scroll one pixel to the right... Well, interesting nontheless.

So, I vote to skip this game and just move to the next.

Maybe it's an alternative, because many people have been playing this and would take a great advantage over those who haven't. So, I think the way is to go with less "mainstream" shmups. But that's just an opinion - I'll play whatever the organizer demands. ;)

I've been only able to get to 2nd level's boss (just had half an hour to practice yesterday), but have noticed some safe spots that are good for scoring. Is the game really full of them? If yes, a FAQ may be very influential over the results. ;)

I didn't know this game before and also just reached the second boss, when I noticed this safespot. You could stay forever on the same position and still increase your score. I got 5'826'460 then I quitted the game because I got bored. There are lots of console only shmups with such flaws. So let's just skip to the next game, shoe sama also noticed it.

I've only been playing this game for about thirty minutes, but I'm pretty sure I suck at it :(

I think I've got round 3 figured out now, lol. Gotta test those strats out though, only in experimental stage right now. From the looks of it, there's no shield in round 3, but I could be wrong. Looks like you'll have to keep the shield from round 2.

I wonder if there's anything late game that can be milked better than the 2nd boss.

And omgwtf that's a lot of extends there.

Round 1's boss is kicking my butt... but seriously this game is too damn frustrating for me :( I can't even think of the techniques to get through some of the situations not to mention how to realize these techniques... will keep on playing though but what to do regarding the boss 2 milking? Is there a limit on how many points you can get off him?

There's no limit for milking. And heck, you gain points at a faster rate if you also leave the top snake launcher intact.

The sections that people might have issues with have really easy ways out. The mines at the beginning, for example, can be dodged by moving backwards with backshot active. (or forwards with forward)

Wasn't there a thread with a list of classic shmups that allow infinite milking (ie not suitable for these kind of contests)?

...

I wouldn't call them "flawed"... It's nowadays "rules" (1cc, etc) that just don't fit them.

Oh sorry, I didn't mean "flawed" like the games are broken in general. I meant flawed for score competition. I still like and enjoy older console shmups, that's why I joined this compo in the first place.

Ok, I believe the world 6 boss can be milked at the fastest rate. Just don't touch the eyeball heart thing's pumps and you'll be fine. Requires that you be present to perform though.

Fourth boss is also better for milking than 2nd.

The final boss is a bitch. I suppose I'll have to get to it with a full power laser to kill it before the timer hits 0. Bah, gotta learn how to no miss quite a few sections now.

The week shall continue as planned, with one minor change: The results will be based on level reached and final score. So for instance anyone who reaches level 7 automatically places higher than anyone who reaches level 6, despite their scores. That is all.

One problem though.

Milking = points. Points = extends. Extends = the game is a joke.

Sure, it takes a shitload of time, but bleh.

So someone who milks like crazy will still have a an advantage. Their score is inflated like crazy, and so is their survival.

Can we go stage - deaths or something like that?

Did someone say TF IV? :D

So what about the 99 lives "trick" in TF IV? If you put the lives at "0" in the US version (Lightening Force), you get 99 lives. That's a big boost to an end score. Is this allowed, or should everyone put their lives at "1" in the options screen and go from there?

ARgh, a new game and I didn't even have time to try scoring in Eliminate Down yet...

Question: Is auto-fire allowed in this tournament?
Before Pope John Paul died he decreed that Aliens were also GOD's creatures and we should treat them with respect.
