Games by RENOVATION.

Post by Pixel_Outlaw »

Ok so I have two games by the company RENOVATION.
Gaiares and Whip Rush, I know of Arrow Flash too.
Has this company only made 3 shmups? I really must say I love all three games. :D
The pixel art is really top notch.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Whip Rush was developed by Vic Tokai, Renovation was just the publisher.

But yes, the other two were Renovation's (Telenet if you want to get technical).
Check out El Viento and the Valis series if you want to play more great stuff from them.

There was some Mech simulation game by Renovation on the PCE CD, I think. Can't remember its name.

Weren't Final Zone 1 and 2, as well as Granada made by Renovation, too?

Renovation brought quite a few titles to the US for the Genesis...

Arrow Flash *
Gain Ground
Arcus Odyssey
Granada
*
Sol-Deace *
Final Zone *-ish
Whip Rush *
Dino Land
Earnest Evans
El Viento
Gaiares
*
Valis: The Phantasm Soldier
Syd of Valis
Valis III
Master of Monsters
Ys III: Wanderers from Ys
Exile
Traysia
Elemental Master
*
Beast Wrestler
Vapor Trail
*

They didn't make all of them, but they did publish them in the US. Of that list, the ones with "*" are shmups.

Edit: Specineff- Renovation didn't make Final Zone and Granada (not sure about FZ2). Wolf Team did.

AFAIK, Renovation Products was one of Telenet's many subsidiaries, and in this case its purpose was to publish Telenet's titles in the US. Renovation Games on the other hand (Reno), did develop games for Telenet (Valis III among others). Other subsidiaries of Telenet were Wolfteam, Riot, and Laser Soft.

Okay, Coop. I thought that Elemental Master was published by Technosoft, though.

Nope. In the US, it was Renovation that published EM. I don't believe Technosoft did any publishing in the US beyond Herzog Zwei (I think Thunder Force III was published by Hot-B, Thunder Force II was published by Sega, Thunder Force IV was published by Sega as Lightening Force, and Devil Crash was published by Tengen as Dragon's Fury... though I may be wrong).

RIOT put out Browning, a mech game on PC engine also. I actually liked the game when I owned it.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Technosoft's only US published game was their own Thunder Force III.
Elemental Master was published by Renovation.
Lightening Force (TFIV) brought to you by Sega.

Oops. I could have sworn it was HZ that Technosoft put out themselves. Dumb mixup, as I knew they only put out one of their own games in the US. Am I getting distribution and publishing mixed up a little, since TF3 lists on the box that it was distributed by Hot-B?

This is the box that I am familiar with as being the US release of TFIII:
(I don't think Hot-B published anything on the Genesis in the US, other than maybe a fishing game?)

Yep. That's the US box art, and on its back is says...

Technosoft Co., Ltd
Distributed by : Hot-B USA Inc.
1255 Post Street, Suite 1040 San Francisco CA 94109

I guess now my question is, in the video game world, what's the difference between publishing, and distributing?

Laser Soft did the programming of Valis III. (Boot up the PCE-CD and take a look.)
As far as game quality goes, I tend to find Telenet's subsidiaries (or maybe they're more like brands) to go like this:

Wolfteam
Riot
.
Laser Soft
.
.
.
RENO (sheer crap)

Laser Soft did PCE Valis 3, Telenet/Renovation did Genny Valis 3.
