My guess is simply because you get those pod things on the front and back of your ship. But you're right, gameplay-wise, the only real similarity is that they are both horizontally-scrolling shmups. Curse doesn't require the memorization or precise movements and really (to me) seems to be more of a vertical shmup in the body of a horizontal one.

You forgot about Dezaemon 3D, the shmup creator for N64. It has some bulit in shmups too. I think it's downright insulting the way you label a shmup that you find poor as the best shmup for the N64. Dezaemon 3D is probably miles better than the N64 Star Soldier.CL@$$!C wrote:Star Soldier for the N64 is pretty damn shitty.
Whoever said to pick it for the hell of playing a shmup on N64 is right though. I can honestly say it's the best shmup i ever played on the N64 (and the worst, and the only).
I have Midway's Arcade Treasures 1 and 2 for GCN and I didn't have a problem with the control of Smash TV or Total Carnage.

Oh man, how embarrassing is this. I meant to put Smash TV under the hardest shmup thread. Wrong thread oops. After posting in the above post, I scrolled down to look at the other topics, and I saw the hardest shmup thread, and I said didn't I just posted in that. I have to go post Smash TV there.
Stormwatch is right, great game, not bad at all.

Before u criticize me for ''labeling'', I do believe i said Star Soldier was the ONLY N64 shmup i've played. Please read.BrianC wrote:You forgot about Dezaemon 3D, the shmup creator for N64. its fine, but doesn't feel right on PS twinsticks. its acceptable considering i don't have to buy the cabinet or make some huge controller, but its not the same.BrianC wrote:I have Midway's Arcade Treasures 1 and 2 for GCN and I didn't have a problem with the control of Smash TV or Total Carnage.

Sorry about that, but there are cool borderliners like Star Fox 64 and Rogue Squadron that are better to play on N64 if you find the only shmup released in the US to be bad. Actually, I haven't played Star Soldier 64, so I might very well end up liking it, though I would like to know why exactly people say it's bad (though it really doesn't sound like a great shmup, it doesn't sound terribly bad either). I misunderstood what you said. I thought you said it was the only shmup on the N64.CL@$$!C wrote:Before u criticize me for ''labeling'', I do believe i said Star Soldier was the ONLY N64 shmup i've played. I personally disagree. Victory Road (aka Ikari Warriors 2) was actually a decent game. The arcade version was more difficult than it had to be, but the NES conversion was actually pretty good. I played a lot of that growing up.Specineff wrote:I know it's not a shmup, but last night I fired MAME up and loaded Dogosouken/Victory Road. I can't believe SNK made an effort to make this such a sucky game. Little rocks block your path until you blast them one by one, IMPOSSIBLE bosses after the worm and the ugly face from hell ("Yeah, let's make a boss that follows you when you retreat to the bottom of the screen, and goes up when you try to charge! American man yank hair out of skull! Devious plan much fulfillment of satisfaction bring!"), and limited firepower that can't reach longer than a spat piece of snot. All the while the legions of enemies intent on killing you and raping your corpse.
Ralf and Clark don't deserve such treatment after the great Ikari Warriors. (Dogosouken is the second in the series)
Also, I must agree w/ those who liked N2O - I really enjoy that game as well - great for 2 player gaming!

Someone else mentioned this on the old forums as well.MovingTarget wrote:On The midway arcade treasures disc for the ps2, one of the creators said he was able to 1cc the entire game. How is that possible!!!
I will never believe it unless I see a video of it. The game is just too chaotic and the last few bosses are just insane.
There is a replay on Marp of someone making it to the level 3 boss on 1 credit. That in itself is incredible. But finishing it ... ? I don't believe it yet.

I don't think it's too unbelievable - as the game's programmer he's not only totally familiar with every little nuance and enemy behavior pattern and so forth, he's also played the game for hundreds if not thousands for hours while developing it, and he's of course had all the practice of the later levels and bosses he would need while developing them.landshark wrote:Someone else mentioned this on the old forums as well.MovingTarget wrote:On The midway arcade treasures disc for the ps2, one of the creators said he was able to 1cc the entire game. I would hardly call rogue squadron a borderliner, but i own both Star Fox and Rogue Squadron. Both are good games, especially star fox.
As for Star Soldier, some people do like it...
I find it below average for being slow and easy, and the hit counter (similar to DonPachi's) seems forced and not well implemented. Not to mention the graphics are just hidious. Still, i play it every once in awhile so it must be doing something right...

Insector X for the Genesis is a cool shmup.
Bad Shmups, Very:
-----------------------
Hani in the Sky (J) - (PCE) Is a shit shmup where you take the role of a flying broom stick missile thing?
Psychic Force - (PCE DUO) Very boring with 8-bit looking graphics & sprites.
Syd Mead's Terraforming - (PCE DUO) Can't get any worse than this. Really.
Bio Metal - (SNES) Horrible animation & gameplay
Fantasy Zone (J) - (PCE) Sucks on any system. But this one looks, sounds & plays worse than the Genesis version. It's just awful!
Rock On (J) - (PCE) Is another bad excuse of a shmup. I can't believe they made games like this!

Fantasy Zone was released in the US for the TG-16 and it's the same game as the Japanese one. It's a port of the arcade game. The Genesis version is a completely different game! Also, Fantasy Zone and Super Fantasy Zone (the Genesis version) are well designed games with good hit detection. Not everyone is into the destroy all big enemies to progress thing, but there is a reason why Fantasy Zone is known as a classic.ST Dragon wrote: Fantasy Zone (J) - (PCE) Sucks on any system. I have that disc and Fantasy Zone is one of the best remakes in the collection, if not the best, but IMO, all of the remakes on that disc are very good except for the Golden Axe remake. The reviews on it at IGN, Game Informer (magazine), and Gamespot are poorly done. IGN's review is filled with needless filler that contradicts some of the comments made in the very same review. They actually said that most of the SEGA Ages games are and aren't true to the originals in the same review. Gamespot's review is the only review that complains about the control for games other than the Golden Axe remake or Outrun (though I like the control in the Outrun remake). Game Informer basically complains about the graphics and how they are dated, but says the actual gameplay is great and still rates it low anyway.CL@$$!C wrote:I think Fantasy Zone was just released with remade graphics on a collection disk for PS2 or something...
I heard it was one of the few good things on the disk.

I do mate, I paid £13 for mine and apart from GoldenEye it's a great little collection. It was also for Atari ST, Amstrad & Commodore 64.captain ahar wrote:i didn't know this was released outside arcade. rock!ST Dragon wrote:Saint Dragon on PCE is good. It looks better than the Amiga version is some stages.
AMIGA conversion was the best port imo. It had better music & sfx than the arcade version, PCE had better graphics in some stages & AMIGA in some others.
The Space level with the blue nebula looks awesome on the AMIGA & so does level 2. But 1st level looks better on PCE. The bull boss is huge on the PCE.
