Favourite boss

I'll never forget the first moment when I played R-Type in the arcades and faced the mothership on level 3. It still sends goosebacks down my spine just thinking about it.

What bosses remain memorable for you?

Satanic Surfer from Battle Garegga. There are so much parts to destroy, I take some methodical surgery pleasure to shoot every pixel of animated mechanics.

The worst boss from Darius Gaiden is better than the best boss from any other game. As far as awesome Darius Bosses go, Risk Storage is pretty tight, folding fan is bad as hell, and the sea horse guy (whatever his name is) has some great attacks. Though, really, all of them are nothing short of astounding.

The opposite might be true as well - they are a series trademark but can also be one of the most tedious aspects of the game. I'm all for some boss fights requiring strategy and such, but Darius overdo it a little. Bosses takes more time and effort than the stages themselves. Definitely not for anyone.

How about that huge mecha boss from Thunder Force IV? That thing is pretty badass (looking).

The ninja-mech from Great Mahou. badass boss if I've ever seen one.
Blackheart 2 is pretty amazing as well. As well as Bashinet in all it's various forms. then there's Batrider's final boss, which gave me chills seeing that pull in from behind you as debris shook off it.
Hell, I just plain out give Raizing a huge award for best boss designs ever. I love their style so much.

having said that, The next-to-last and last bosses of Einhander are just plain out fun. I just love tearing parts off all the bosses in the game, but those two were the most fun to destroy.

Stick or pad Feb 23
Pad.
Where I'm from, I don't really know what a 100% working joystick plays like. I don't enjoy analog sticks. I may like them better if they had options for actual analog speed control, but I don't know a game that really does that...if R-Type-something didn't already.
Either way, I had long-term training on the pad.

Best system for collecting shmups on Feb 22
Factoring money, Jpn PS2. Because this adds the jpn PS1 collection.

Favourite boss Feb 23
The Embryon - G Darius

If this is true, ya might wanna PM a mod and ask "@Retro Gamer" be taken out of your username. You'll probably get hit with less of the sarcasm if you're portrayed as just that guy “Daz” and less as a for-profit corporate entity on a forum that habitually bitches about spam.

Mushihime-sama stage 4 boss. It's a freaking giant water skeeter! Awesome! =D

The boss right before the stone-like in Ikaruga is cool too. I love the switch and homing laser thing it does to you, and you in return!

Even if @Retro Gamer was removed nearly everyone who cares enough probably wouldn't forget. I personally have no issues with Daz here making 3 topics in a brief span, at least they seem to have a little effort into them. Besides, if it is infact for an article in RG, then so be it, he did his homework with some Q/A & surveying not to mention a little help on our end. Seems only fitting if that is the purpose he came to the right place, the shmups.com forum no less.

On that note, I personally think the Shmups Chat section has gotten a bit bogged down. Only Off Topic has as many topics and about 15,000 less posts. Perhaps to include sub sections into SC might remove this air of hostility that's shown up recently. Just an idea...
Even better, just make the Board FAQ a mandatory read for any newcomers.

Yeah I didn't care either way. I was just curious. Daz is coo in my book.

Well, I thought the purpose was to keep all posts about a single topic condensed to the same one thread. STGs only have so much people can talk about. If it's still generally preferred users bring back old topics to fill their two cents on instead of making new threads, plenty of the hostility kinda spawns from when a similar thread search isn't done......'even worse when a similar thread is created and the user claimed to be "too lazy to search."

I guess it's just a preference if a forum user wants to search through 300 pages of threads with under 30 posts or search through 120 pages of thread topics for 2-10 post paged threads.

I like containing everything about 1 topic in a single thread.

ESPrade - mad flying psychic school boy corpse.
Radiant Silvergun - r-type ship, copy of your mothership, Xiga
Gradius V - asteroid core
Guwange - demon baby

I would have to agree with this. Although I didn't mention it since the battle itself wasn't too memorable. The experience was truly satisfying though. Long live Slap Fight!

I was going to mention the Gond from the 2600 Vanguard for similar reasons, but I didn't because the actual battle itself isn't all that great.

Thunder Force III: Cerberos

Thunder Force IV: Fomalhaut, the Daser boss. Stage 9's boss is also one of the best in the game.

Darius Gaiden: Titanic Lance, Electric Fan, Folding Fan, King Fossil, Risk Storage

G.Darius: Great Thing, Dual Horn, Fire Fossil

Battle Bakraid: Balrog, Axebeak, and Advanced Final Boss.

RayForce: Area 5 boss "Odin". The final boss is another one, and the way it wavers and warps in is cool.

Radiant Silvergun: You guessed it- Xiga.

Progear: Korogis

Thunder Blade: SR-71 "Blackbird" (stage 3 in the arcade version, the first three stage boss battles are done shmup style)
Kinect? KIN NOT.

X-10 Vatten´s boss in the demo of it (first level I assume in the full release)
is very hard to forget... definitely the best looking boss I have seen! 8)

But there´s no boss more recognizable than R-type level 1´s. I´d say that´s by far the best known boss of any shmup.
Barroom hero!
