So, I just figured out that the stand my 17" LCD Dell monitor sits on allows me to rotate the monitor 90 degrees. Then went in to mame and found there is an option to rotate the screen. Silly me. So, I played a bit of ESPrade and low and behold it was awesome to play with a nice big screen for the first time. Just thought I would let you guys know, as I am excited indeed. I'm a moron for not figuring this out before. Do you think it is worth it to buy a VGA box for my ps2 to play on this monitor, or should I just wait it out until I buy a 42" Plasma this summer?

I refuse to play shmups now unless my tv is tated. I didn't realise how much of an improvement over yoko it was. I have 20", 26" and 32" tvs which are all tate-able, but I found the 32" just too big for my field of vision. You mentioned a 42" plasma, but from my limited experience that may be too big. If anything, I would stick with the 17".

I bought this TV and computer monitor in one. The back is kinda beveled so it's not painless to tate since you have to get it sitting upright somehow. Still it's great to have a monitor and TV in one in my tiny room.

As for what you should do, umm... I would totally get the VGA box

I play all of my dreamcast games tated on a 17" CRT - amazing. I love it.

I have a few PS2 imports that I have to play on my HDTV in yoko mode. I'm considering investing in a vga box for it also. Yoko = "teh poo"

This is some what of a bummer, but I have to study for a exam I have tomorrow instead of play with my new set up. Man, I can't wait until my Hori RAP comes in next week.

I'm with the majority here. Yoko throws me off so ridiculously it's embarrasing. The only exception to that rule is MAME, since the aspect ratio doesn't go that much all to shitfuck unlike some console ports.

One of my friends in town purchased a 42" plasma during Black Friday (one of these Panasonics, actually) along with a rotatable wall mount. Works wonders.

The games look fantastic, but playing in 16:9 WILL throw you off. Switching to 4:3 helps bring things back to some sense of normalcy. You need only be worried if you're paranoid about burn-in, since you will see the remnants of the active/inactive parts of the screen after a long session. Leaving something non-static on the set (ex: an anime DVD on title repeat, which loops the contents of the DVD without going back to the menu) for 72-80 hours before playing any games on it will make burn-in less of an issue in the long run.

Also, make sure that there's adequate ventilation for heat to escape through the right side (top when tated) of the set, as it can get quite hot.

I'm using a 21" screen for tate which is pretty much perfect; I wouldn't use a much larger one. 42" is definitely too large for efficient playing.

i think 42 inches is going to be too hard to focus on .. i find it hard to focus on a screen bigger than 21 inches.. i also have to be sat at the right height so my head is just above the bottom of the screen otherwise i just find it real hard to play proper...

Personally I would rather play vertical shmups over tated 21'' than yoko 42'' ;o I am glad my 29" Daewoo works well tated for such a long time now

My consoles live inside my candy cabinet.

You lot can keep your widescreen LCDs and Plasmas. They look bloody awful running low-res games if you ask me.

Give me RGB on CRT, or give me nothing.

That sounds great and all, but I'm not just going to be using this TV for shmups. Watching movies and playing non-shmup video games on a huge TV is much better. Also, if I want to play a shmup and not sit really close to the screen, I would like to see them, and to do so, I want it to be big enough.

You'd get a 42" solely for tate games? Hardcore. Or if you mean that the vertical image would be big enough in 42" yoko, yeah, it's probably big enough but you would lose the extra resolution which can only be achieved with a tated display.

A VGA box may be a good idea, but I must warn you that some games (DoDonPachi DOJ, ESPgaluda, Raiden III...) offer only TATE-R, so your monitor will have to rotate counter-clockwise for those games. Sadly most monitors only seem to be able to rotate clockwise. I ended up with two separate tate displays, a 19" tated crt for ps2 and a rotating 19" lcd for MAME.

Yeah, what I meant was do you think the 42" would be large enough in Yoko. My monitor does only seem to rotate clockwise, so that blows.

It's always a different feeling yoko. I don't think having a bigger screen will change it that easily. The whole tate thing for me is just an extra added charm to the whole gaming experience.
If you have the cash and the space get something dedicated for your tate setup..... Or...

Get an arm! It fits your future monitors too.

What exactly do you mean by "an arm"? I have a standard dell stand that came with my monitor. I'm not sure that I can mount it on anything else. Also, playing in tate did have a different feeling for some reason. Maybe I'll set up the TV I have now tated, but it is just a regular old school CRT with one composite input. Plus, that would require me to unplug everything and get behind the 2 TVs to play shmups or other games.

I just had a thought. Do you know if the Dell monitor stands with let you mount the monitor upside down? This would allow ps2 shmups to be played in tate because I could then rotate the monitor to the correct side. I can't try it, as I'm not home right now.

I also have a Dell and the mounting plate should be standard VESA 75x75 or 100x100. You can buy adapters to get from one measure to the other.

Mounting your Dell upside down should be possible in theory but if it will actually work depends more on the arm I guess.

That looks pretty handy. How much do those run and how do you connect it to a desk? Is it just a clamp?

I believe I paid around 120 euro when I bought it.
It can work as a clamp or you could fix it to a wall.
I've just used the clamp.
It rotates both sides almost completely so you could put your monitor simply upside down. I got exactly that one with the longer arm just because I might use that feature in the future. Till now I haven't really used it, only to connect the cables. On the arms there's some plastics holders where you can put away your cables nicely. Those with the shorter arms are less expensive but I dunno how much though.

For doing mame on the pc, you're so much closer to the screen that tate isn't really needed (you also don't have to deal with yoko graphics).

Consoles need tate-ing though. Mushi will pretty much force anyone to do it.

I just had to necro this post. When I tated my tv it used to have completely fucked up colors. Unless how long I kept it tated and how often I degaussed. Seemingly! But I had it tated for one week now without putting it on and TADDAAAA it has only two places with little too red colors but that's it the colors are perfect now. You might understand how happy I am when you know that my monitor is one of the smallest that are still sold. But tated I can even play Ibara without problems. THAT FREAKIN ROCKS!

I "ghetto tate (read: shmup glossary) on my 32" TV every now and then and it's just a little bit too large of a screen for me. But the same TV works well YOKO for games that do YOKO well. Mushihime-sama as mentioned, is a must-tate port. It was the first game I tate'd for.

There was a rather wide-encompassing topic on this awhile back, it probably shoulda been stickied, I think bloodflowers started it...anyone have the link?

In a nutshell, if memory serves, putting most any TV into tate mode carries some risk: some people's TVs break after only a few tries, others keep them tipped over for a long time and they work fine. It's a chance you take, so it's recommended you use a cheap/disposable TV.
