similar to Under Defeat (bullet speed)

Post by 1up »

I have a new favorite game. Its Under Defeat. Why? Because I feel like im really good at it and the graphics are kick ass. On my first try I made it to 1-3 and after 2 days im at 1-5 and I feel like I will 1CL it real soon.

I was wondering if theres other shmups with the same kind of bulletspeed and bulletpatterns?

well you could try G-rev's other title on DC, border down. I'd say it similar in the ways you mentioned but it's a hori.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Is the general consensus Toaplan? I don't have much experience with them, but others here seem to think so...though maybe it's just the simplicity.

The games are totally different, but for some reason the way the bullets kinds angle towards your ship and then pick up speed reminds me of Layer Section.

which ones? Im a big Psykio fan and often play the Strikers series and Gunbird series which hand my penis to me. Been playing Strikers 1945 for about 6 months on and off and cant get past 1-5.

Those Psykio games ive mentioned doesnt compare to Under Defeats bullet patterns. Psykio has those dreaded lightning fast bullet spreads and areas which require serious twitching action.

What Toaplan games is recommended and what system is Layer Section for?

I would say Layer Section (Saturn) as well as its sequels Raystorm and Raycrisis (both Playstation). Also Border Down, for obvious reasons.

You might want to try some of the Raiden games as well, I find those similar to UD in some ways.

The only thing I have to say about the suggestions listed so far, is that Border Down is WAAAAYYY harder than Under Defeat =P Heck, most shooters are harder than Under Defeat.

You could go for Batsugun, that's a pretty good one for feeling like you kick ass =D

Raiden III for the pc is quite similar IMHO... and perhaps Brave Blade in Mame? It's not too hard anyway.

A lot of older Toaplan games fall into the "Die once and you're fucking SCREWED" category. Under Defeat isn't like that at all.

Raystorm is probably as close as you can get.

It's just a PC game but you should try Demolition Gunner. It's not only similar it seems like a tribute to Under Defeat. I find it a bit too easy though...

1-5 after 2 days?

When was this game released? I got it when it came out and I'm still not reaching stage 3 consistently...

Since most of the enemies in each stage are on the ground, they shoot up at you, just like in the Ray series (RayForce, RayStorm and RayCrisis). These three are the only games, that I know of, that have the same bullet patterns as Under Defeat.

Could 1cc all modes and I am so bad I can't get over level 3 in any Cave/Psikyo/Raizing game.

I made it to 1-5 after like an hour or two when I first started playing it, but my score was pretty bad. It took considerably longer to clear the first loop though...

ok, thanks for the replies :)

So far you've suggested:
RayForce
RayStorm
RayCrisis
Shienryu
Demolition Gunner
Layer Section
Zero Gunner 2

Which of these games are for dreamcast or ps1? The only two consoles i own besides the xbox.

Let's see if I can do this by memory:

RayForce (Saturn, PS2)
RayStorm (PS1, PS2)
RayCrisis (PS1)
Shienryu (Saturn, PS1, PS2)
Demolition Gunner (PC)
Layer Section (Same thing as RayForce, also known as Galactic Attack)
Zero Gunner 2 (DC)
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

RayStorm is also on the Saturn, under the title "Layer Section II". The PSone version is superior though (IMO).
