Most shmup-like movies

Post by Bydo Dragon »

Dunno if there's been a thread about this already, but I did a quick check and didn't see one...

Excluding those that were based directly off the games, such as Wing Commander, which movies or TV shows have you seen that strike you as decidedly shmup-like?

Battlestar Galactica is obvious. As is Sky Captain and the world of tomorrow. Any others?

(On a side-note, I'm thinking the upcoming summer movie "Stealth" looks quite interesting.)

The first movie that comes to my mind is Matrix Revolutions... that one scene where they are riding in mechs shooting those things... They even form a snake while one of the mechs rapidly guns it down killing each section just like a shmup! I was like O_O

Man, I had totally forgotten about that show. I loved it. Very cool. I wish they'd release the series on DVD.

Sky Captain and the worl of tommorow is "must" shmupheads I'd say (great action and looking at Angelina Jolie isn't the worst thing ever too of course...:D).

The others mentioned (SW, TLSF, BSG) are also pretty obvious.

For some reason the attack scenes from this DREADFUL movie called "Pearl Harbour" also comes to mind, but sitting through the rest of the movie is such a drag it may not be worth it. Nicely filmed though...

Oh and after Top Gun it will only be a matter of time before someone mentions *shivers* Iron Eagle 1, 2, 3 or Firefox, but please let them rest... :x
Oh man...I did just mention them didn't I  :(

Maybe I've been misinformed, but what I understand, Gunhed the movie came first. Hudson got some licensing deal with Toho, and made a game which seems to have absolutely nothing to do with the movie. And so Gunhed was born.

This most likely craptacular movie looks like it'll be pretty shmup-y.

And I agree it's a Macross Plus rip off.

The Macross series are of course one of the best shmup-like Anime ever produced.

Oh come on! Firefox may be dated, but it's still a better movie than Skycaptain - what were all those dinosaurs about? Ok, it may have aleviated my Angelina Jolie/women wearing eye patches fetish in one stroke(no pun intended), but that's all it had going for it.

Erm, I wasn't reffering to the "Clint Eastwood" movie, but to the one with little
battle chopper fighting it out against Colombian Drug/Warlords...

I know I've seen that, but I think I've blanked it from my mind for the sake of my own sanity. :D

Baaaah, Airwolf could blast Blue Thunder out of the sky any day. XD

'Twas my absolute favorite TV show in the 80s...classic shmup material, no one gave a shit about the crappy story (which wasn't...TOO bad, actually), they just wanted to see Airwolf blow up migs. :D

You're correct. And I was aware that the film came before the game, I was just thinking that since Bydo was only asking about totally orginal movies, I figured that a shmup (loosly) based on a movie would be in the same league. I don't know. Heh.

By the way, is anyone familiar with an old TV series called Star Fleet? I believe that the original Japanese name was Bomber X or something along those lines. That show was pretty shumpy from what I remember (but that was many years ago).

I recall hearing that some higher-up wanted to turn the series into Melrose Space, so the production crew pulled the plug itself to retain some honor.

While we're talking about anime, I might as well throw in Vandread...I want lasers that will conveniently avoid my allies and seek out my enemies...

Theres a big fight scene in the Gunbuster anime that's fairly cool. 1 robot that can split into two ships vs. about 6 billion aliens. That was pretty shmuppy.

Amn, I'm confused about Vandread. One the on hand It sucks. On the other hand, I could'nt stop watching! And am I the only one who would actualy build a Pyoro unit, just to be able to kill it in the most painfull way possible. Then repair it and repeat!!! :x

I didn't think it was so bad--sure it was pretty stupid, but it didn't take itself too seriously. I think if they had tried to make it serious it would have really sucked. It was a pretty lightshow, in any case. XD

Oh, I've got one - that Japanese puppet tv show where all the ships linked up to form a giant fighting robot (man in suit kicking down scale models  )

Starfleet I think it was called.
